This is absolutely heartbreaking and was a grievous abuse of power. The actions taken by FWC were needless and rash. These individuals had no training nor authority to euthanize these snakes and didn't even bother to have a licensed veterinarian oversee the procedures.

Holy shit, I despise the state more and more as I get older. The FWC says, "these snakes are ours now, but you have to feed, house, clean, and pay for their care until we can stop by to shoot a nail into their head." So, not only do they kill your snakes without warning, they murder your beloved pet, and to top it all off they make you pay for it all. Governments seemingly around the world have gotten way, way out of hand. It's time that we reign them in. Disgusting behavior like this is a good place to start holding them accountable.
P.S. You say they accidentally killed the Boa, but the guy in the blue saw and comprehended the sign on the enclosure. He was either too much of a coward to say anything, or he deliberately kept quiet.

The worst part about this whole thing to me is that those snakes were all tap trained - meaning you would tap them with a snake hook to let them know it was not food time and not to strike at the handler. All those years building trust with these animals and then it gets used so you can take them out and kill them without getting bitten it breaks my heart

Thanks for talking to this without the shock value of video footage. What happened and those deeds were downright awful and atrocious. I am not brought to tears easily, but I couldn't watch what was happening without not only bawling, but becoming physically ill. And I grew up on a farm! As a person with native American heritage, I was appalled at how easily these people took the lives of these creatures without any respect to their spirits.

Yeah sooo I'm just gonna come out with it: I'm a snake owner and breeder who has worked in private conservation in the past, not as a LEO, but I've known a few LEOs well enough. So I've been on both sides of this issue, and I'm comfortable saying the way this went down was astoundingly bad... Like, it boggles my mind to think about the steps FWC had to have taken to botch this up so badly. I can easily understand why so many people think this was intentional... I agree with them. The ways in which all of this could have been averted are too numerous to list off the top of my head. This wasn't just the officers screwing up, this was *all* of Florida FWC screwing up - from the top down.
Beware of federal/state conservation agencies. They aren't what they appear to be.

    • @spracketskooch
      @spracketskooch Рік тому

They appear to be hives of government overreach and incompetence, at least to me. You can always trust government to screw things up massively, then take zero responsibility, and face no consequences for their actions. If they by some miracle do give the appearance that they will face consequences for their actions, it's never jail time, and any recompense they pay you comes from the taxpayers, not from the individuals responsible for said actions. Also, it's this bad in America, imagine how bad it is in other places.

I’m not a snake owner but I can clearly see the passion and love snake breeders have for their animals and they cannot fathom how FWC could just walk in and kill a perfectly legal snake after they were told numerous times they could not kill that boa constrictor. Thankfully I live in Texas where reptile ownership is still legal and I hope to get my first snake one day. Even if it’s just a small grass snake.

Actually Texas took after Florida when banning the sale of retics and burms within the state. Breeders have to sell them out of state. Texas is very much in danger of becoming like Florida, I know of a retic breeder in Texas who thinks he's "safe" because he's permitted, well so was Coffee until FWC made those permits obsolete. He DOES have to worry but is sticking his head in the sand when we need people like him speaking out, he called Coffee stupid for owning "illegal animals" that he WAS permitted for and had them all chipped etc.

I was blindsided by a video the next day showing the graphic footage of what happened. To say I lost it was an understatement. I started screaming. I suffer from PTSD from horrific events of my past. UA-cam, in all their idiocy, had no disclaimer, no warning, nothing to inform me I was to see someone murdering snakes just because they were the wrong kind of snakes.
I’m sorry, I’ve had to stop your video part way through ‘cause I thought I was getting sick. I’m still breaking down in tears if I think of it. Thank you, Bob for not showing footage. I respect you very much, and now respect you even more for your consideration. Blessings!

I don't know if you've already seen Clint's Reptiles' video on this issue, but Clint also avoided showing the footage -- it's good that the footage was made public, but it's not appropriate to be shown indiscriminately. I'm sorry you were hurt by the footage; you're right that there was little warning given for (all? most?) of the shorts covering this issue.

I don't think I've seen *anybody* give a warning before showing the footage. This video has been popping up in my recommended for a few days but I was avoiding it because I didn't want to be blindsided with the footage again. I'm only watching it now because someone linked it and mentioned that there is no footage shown in this video.
I understand the need for awareness and the fact that showing how horrible what happened was gets people motivated to write to their congressperson and so forth, but I can't watch it again. I can't. I don't want to hear the sound of the bolt gun either.
Thank you for not including the footage in this video.

I think the owner of the boa should be compensated in total, for the value of the boa, it’s babies and for the years it will take to get a new female and get her sexually mature. No it should not fall on the Florida taxpayers. The agency shouldn’t be paying for it, nor should an insurance company. IT NEEDS TO COME DIRECTLY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS. Might that devastate them financially? Maybe that’s better than the victim being financially devastated…

Hey Ken! This is Chris from Georgia- I’m Jennifer’s friend from Black box enclosures. Love your video and what you had to say about Holy Thursday. I’m unhinged about it right now, which is why I can’t do a video on it. That being said, the research I’ve done on veterinary research papers regarding bolt gun use, they all say using a bolt gun is ethical, and this is what the FWC uses and will continue to use- which is brutal. Per the law, the officers did nothing wrong, except for the boa. Emailing desantis sounds good, but I personally don’t believe he cares about this subject, especially with the Disney thing going on. If you look at each of the commissioners he appointed, NONE of them have degrees that deal with herpetology or even the eco system. If he cared he would have appointed experts in these areas, not business majors. That being said I’ve done each of the things you recommended, but if you also look at the May 10th FWC meeting web page, there is a spot where you can email them letters for discussion during the meeting. I sent a five page letter to them, as a vertebrate population biologist, offering my services for free to help update their rules and standards. We shall see…

I'm glad you took action! The fact that this is probably a "minor issue" to the governor is why we need to continue contacting his office about it - we need to make some noise to shine some light on it... You're right, the only "illegal" thing they did was to kill the boa. They didn't follow proper procedures for use of that bolt gun which made all the killings inhumane.

Taking out your anger on snake keepers for the invasive python issue is misplaced. The overwhelming majority of the problem came from a warehouse that was used for breeding and storage for the pet trade, that got destroyed in Hurricane Andrew in the early 1990’s. So to blame the snake hobbyists is wrong.

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  Рік тому +4

Unfortunately there had been a well established population long before hurricane Andrew. Burmese pythons had become relatively popular in the 70s and 80s with almost nobody saying "it might be bad if you release these when they get too big". The destroyed breeding facility added to the problem but it had become an issue years before. I think most keepers now are responsible enough to know not to release them but it was a pretty common practice back in the day unfortunately.

I think niche pet people need to stick together, but also we need to learn to be better communicators. 😂 But thank you for explaining this event so clearly. I had heard about it on the Snake Discovery group but didn’t really understand why it was so bad. As an aside, I found you via the Snake Discovery build off.

Honestly, as a Belgian person watching this whole situation going on its just absurd.
I am also not allowed to own a retic if i have one and i get caught, the animal protection authority will confiscate the snake and rehome it in a local zoo or even ship it across the border to the Netherlands where this species is legal to keep as a pet. Why do these animals have to be euthanised??? The FWC could confiscate them and rehome them outside of the state with the help of USARK to a state where they are legal. Killing pets is as unethical and barbaric as can be...

All these "laws" are disgusting and should be abolished. Seems like it was made only to make people's lives more miserable, not to mention the animal's lives. If the law forbids perfectly innocent practice to be conducted inside one's own home... why should any self-respecting person respect such "law"? It's horryfying and disgusting. My heart breaks for everyone involved... BESIDES the police in this instance...

What my friend and I said on our livestream when it came to submitting comments for FWC's May 10th-11th meeting was:
    - Be stern, but professional
    - No violent accusations
    - No threats
    - Be as clear and concise as possible
    - Be thoughtful. Don't only rant. Have a constructive goal to your comment.

How horrific. I have seen many videos on this but couldn’t bring myself to watch them. Glad I didn’t because just hearing the story is incredibly heartbreaking. Thank you for overview.
Reminded me of the pitbull ban in a city I used to live in. I was supposed to have mine registered but their laws were so extreme I was afraid of something like this happening to my dog one day so I opted to never have her registered. Regardless of the law I felt that was the more responsible choice for my dog…

    • @Mobesly10

To finish that thought, it is even more disheartening that someone who did everything they needed to in order to comply with the law was treated so terribly. He is in my thoughts.

I don't know what city you lived in@@Mobesly10 but this has happened in several cities, including Cincinnati where I live. Registration, then bans, followed by forced euthanasia now that they had a handy list of all the registered pit bulls (not even an actual breed, btw, but a list of physical characteristics). That is what happened with FWC too. This legislation is despicable... and ineffective at addressing the problem they're trying to address.

FWC should have no jurisdiction in homes and businesses. If they want to hunt invasive species, fine. If _real_ law enforcement comes across a banned species in someone's home - through lawful interactions - and want to consult with FWC, fine. Their job is fish and wildlife *conservation.* Nothing living in an enclosure is a threat to fish or wildlife.
Their actions are akin to shooting dogs in people's yards, because they _might_ get out and start eating things that other animals eat. Insanity. If snakes had fur, FWC never would have gained the power they have. Notice how they aren't dispatching cats, even though there's an insanely large feral cat population. Why? Because that would upset tens of millions of people, who would take to the streets in protest.
It's all just the same song with slightly different lyrics. They don't want to get their hands dirty dealing with the real problems, so they go after regular folks who are just trying to live their lives. That way, they can bolster their numbers, tell the public that they're "doing something" and keep their cushy government jobs.
There were these trials in Nuremberg. People claimed they were "just following orders." It wasn't a valid defense then and it shouldn't be, now. Qualified immunity has gone _way_ too far.

I know this is an old video, but I think it's important to point out that they actually were not supposed to lose their snakes at all. In 2021, when this was passed, anyone who owned snakes legally was supposed to stop breeding, but were permitted to keep their animals for their natural lives, as any previously registered snakes were covered under a grandfather clause. There are multiple quotes from the people in charge of the passing and enforcement of that law specifically stating that nothing like this was supposed to happen, and no one was supposed to be choosing between rehoming or euthanizing any animals. Those quotes are below.
The reason they were supposed to be there was to make sure all the snakes were accounted for, in a response and completely illegal punishment for Chris doing exactly what he thought he was supposed to, and what the law appeared to say he was supposed to. Even if he didn't need to get rid of the animals, he was under the belief that he did, and there was no law against him doing so. Yet he got in legal trouble, had his animals seized as discussed in this video, and they were slaughtered illegally. A lot of people have talked about how the boa was not supposed to be euthanized - rightfully so, as that is horrific - but it is equally horrific in my eyes that *all* of these snakes were specifically and clearly given permission to continue to live out peaceful lives with their keepers until their natural passing.
Every single snake involved in this absolutely heart-wrenching failure of FWC officers to know the laws and enforce them properly, as well as to take any sort of care at all to know one snake from another, lost their lives in a senseless, heartless, painful, and completely unnecessary action. This information took me a single google search to find, meaning the FWC officers should have just as easily if not moreso been able to avoid this and make the proper call. My heart goes out to Chris for the unfair loss of his animals all because he tried to be a responsible keeper and citizen and follow the laws to the letter.
The footage is horrible to watch, and I myself only saw a small clip of it, but it is disturbing how comfortable these people seemed with what they were doing. It was shrugged off as "just part of the job", but there are images of them smiling as they looked at the still-writhing snakes laid on a floor covered in remnants of them and the others. They tossed the half-living snakes to the side and in garbage cans as though they were objects, and they ignored the reality of the fact that in multiple cases, these snakes were still moving as they were thrown around. It was as though they believed their lives were worthless to begin with. I can't imagine working with wildlife and reacting the way they did to this. When they call this a massacre, there is no exaggeration or stretch of the term needed. It is brutal, and I don't recommend you watch it unless you are sure you can handle it, as there is graphic imagery throughout. The bit of solace comes at the end when they are screamed at for the loss of the boa, but they deserved much more than just that. They deserve legal repercussions.
"I want to make sure the public's aware that if you currently own one of these reptiles, you're allowed to keep it until it's death. So no one is telling you you have to get rid of your pet or euthanize it and no one from the state is going to take it from you." Rodney Barreto , Chairman - Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission - Public commission meeting February 25, 2021
"Their pets are their pets and they are going to continue to be their pets and we made sure that it was very clear." - Mike Sole, Former Vice Chairman - Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Public commission meeting February 25, 2021
