Love the idea of using engines and trucks to actually clean track and have thought of doing the same but wasnt aware of the old cleaning wagons built by TRIANG many thanks
I made a cleaning car by securing a wodge of fine scotchbrite to underneath a LowMac wagon but for preference I run a bit of 4000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a square of stick and it gets the railheads abs gleaming every time without grinding the rail down itself.
Thanks Ash. I am aware of the Vollmer kits but not the Kibri. Either way I'm glad you have a good use for your Freightliner Class 08 now & big thanks for your comments as always. You take care too my friend. Cheers, John.
Hi Tony, its good to hear from you again & I trust you are well & all is good? Glad you are still enjoying the vids & all support is greatly appreciated. Loads more vids/ideas to come in time yet!! Cheers, John.
Hi buddy & thanks for your whimsical comment....I really wish I could send it down to Kent to help you but I'm afraid that's a no-go! I know one of my fellow UA-camrs has already answered this one for you but just to reiterate....the Dapol Hoover car in the video is actually a DCC one....it is backward compatable to Analouge [DC] too which is the way I am using her in the vid. Hope this helps you? Best regards, John.
The class 08 shunter has a top speed of 15mph in real life, the Hornby model I have is not geared down like your one here - I really like the effect of this, is this one a Bachmann by any chance? Great set up tho - like it.
These were only ever rated for 15mph permitted although a 20mph was attained on a "thrash" but that would likely have the fitters out on strike for having to rebuild the poor gear train lol 09's could travel a bit faster and sometimes did duty say Clapham to Olympia actually saw a double head of a 09 and there was a double 09 pair that did some railtours but not exactly racing at 27ish on full ahead both and the 9's never had the balls the 08 had in pulling incredibly long sets.
I notice that you yellow track cleaning car has got plastic wheels when I got mine the plastic wheels were all busted so I replaced the wheels with Metal wheels
No buddy I use 5 controllers. On an Analogue system like mine I have 3 independent main lines....this requires 1 controller for each line. I use 2 controllers for the lighting meaning 5 all-together. If you are on DCC you can use 1 controller everything but its still not always the best way if you have a lot happening! Hope this helps you? Cheers, John.
Hello Aidan & thanks for your comment/question. I will say here though that I don't think I can put the answer to this on the internet...I think this would be more of a private thing! What I will say though is I am into 'telephone numbers' now! I hope you understand this? Cheers, John.
Hi buddy, thanks for your comment & question. No this will not damage the rails. The pads are only laying on the track with centrifugal force....there are no springs pushing tha pads hard-down on the track! As this is a genuine Hornby product with a very fine emery-cloth type abbrasive...this presses with little pressure on the track & will not cause damage...much the same as the abbrasive wheel on the Dapol Hoover wagon ...no worries. cheers, John.
Love this video, doing stuff like this makes you feel more like you are running and maintaining a proper railway and not just spinning toy trains around!
Thanks buddy. OK, it doesn't really matter what brand the Hoover wagon is....the main thing is that the whole idea worked really well together! Thanks for the comment. Kind regards, John.
Hi David....thanks for the comment & question. It is very handy with it being geared-down so low! This one is Hornby....I put the model number in the descriptions box above. Hope this helps you? Kind regards, John.
Hi ;-) great video. I have the dapol vacuum and track cleaning coach. I find the skis get caught on junctions and slip off on curves and derail. Im going to be using them again today. Prob ably with my 08 or 66
Hi bud...thanks for the comment. OK, the reason why the skids on the track cleaning coach come-off on junctions/points etc is a simple one. You have to make sure that the abrasive pads are well glued at the ends....in the upright positions so as to stop this from happening! Hope that helps you? Kind regards, John.
Hello buddy....thanks for your comment. All the items run in the video [including the locomotive] are listed in the descriptions box below the video. Kind regards, John.
Thanks for the comment & yes...it all worked out really well! With the shunter only running slow on full power.....the hoover fan was spinning fast & sucking really good! Cheers, John.
Hi John, an upgrade for you, a second Triang car but fitted with a green scotch pad cut to fit, they are sold as pan scrubbers, but, the best ones to get are from car shops, used for sanding, they come in different grades (colours) i just use the green one, give it a try
Thank you for the nice comment my friend & yes....the Hoover wagon does really do a good job! I am glad you liked the combination...it all worked really well! Regards, John.
hi john not spoke for a while, i am still enjoying your video's buddy! always a good variety of subjects you choose to do! keep em' coming pal regards tony...
I used to put a couple of florins (10ps) on the underslung pad for an even better clean back in the 70's as it spreads the pad - an old lead curtain weight will do even better if you can find a square one. For the N gaugers and 009'ers, the tomix is a good substuitute for the dapol unit (and quite cheap pricewise)
Had a look on ebay for the Dapol cleaner , " Crikey " ! not cheap are they £60 , I think Id best build up my fleet all over again ,now the kids are old enough not to touch and my 15 year old daughter thinks Im sad lol but if I had sons Im sure they would love Model rail lol
Nice :) Any chance you can route this cleaning train down to Ashford in Kent to clean my track please? ;) Quick question, does the Dapol cleaning car work on a DCC layout?
OK mate I have got a high speed train I want to make the coaches closer to the power cars I have carriages joiners I want to know what is the rubber tubes are called Many thanks Henry
Hi James & yes there is no better way than by hand however....there are many times where those "unreachable" places are that with my way can be beneficial! All the best mate, John.
Many years ago I had one of those yellow track cleaning wagons on my layout and tbh I thought it was rubbish. In my opinion the best way to clean the track is by hand with a peco track cleaning rubber. If you can still get them that is....
What a very good idea John! Nobody has ever tried that one before.
The most natural and genuine Chanel on UA-cam. Love your videos fella. 👍👍

@icurus222 there is a dcc version where you can control the dapol motor via an address...
Good idea, though in North America that track cleaning vacuum car is sold by Atlas.
Fantastic video love the 08 and your mix and match set-up !! Well done !!

The Dapol is good at vacuuming, I use one , lifts all the grit and dirt , GOOD COMBINATION YOU HAVE GOT THERE..
Hi Adam, thanks again for a nice comment & yes....it all worked really good! Cheers, John.

A brilliant peace of money saving yet very effective. The Shunter (Bachmann?) is just as brilliant too, great information. thanks for sharing!

Thanks Daniel for the nice comment. Guess you'll have to get yourself the same set-up....it worked really well! Cheers, John.
Thanks buddy for the comment. You can get the Dapol cleaning wagon quite easily on Ebay....just do a search for it. Hope that helps? Cheers, John.
Thanks for the comment & yes...it all worked out really well! With the shunter only running slow on full power.....the hoover fan was spinning fast & sucking really good! Cheers, John.
Thank you for the nice comment buddy & yes.....it all worked-out really well....just as I was anticipating/expecting it would! Kind regards, John.

Extremely helpful video. Have the Dalpol and the felt wagon, but not the abrasive one. Just need to figure out how to down-gear an engine.
this is a splendid idea !

Quick question, does the Dapol cleaning car work on a DCC layout?
Asap what are the carriage. Joiners called (not the clips/hooks)
Henry Winterbourne Not sure what you are asking Henry....can you please be a bit more specific? Cheers, John.
OK mate I have got a high speed train I want to make the coaches closer to the power cars I have carriages joiners I want to know what is the rubber tubes are called
Many thanks
Henry
+Henry Winterbourne I think you mean the pipe couplers Henry. Cheers, John.
If you mean the flexible gangways for people to pass from one coach to another, I think that they are called "Corridor Connections".
Please reply :) Im a new subscriber, and i would like to know how much you have spent all together on all of your trains. Thanks :)
i will do when i have the money lol
You've got a amazing layout. I'm hoping to build mine soon
