Honestly, seeing whats now a niche genre win GOTY warms my heart. Larian went from weekly contracts and barely staying afloat to being top dogs and I'm so fucking glad.
I am so happy for them, I am so happy that they didn't give up.
For real, i remember when the peak player count for these type of games are like 50k and that's considered a massive success, now we have BG3 with like 800k and penetrating the mainstream

So true, every game this year could've been a winner in any of the previous years but this year nobody expected BG3 to be this HUGE. BG3 didn't even get nominated to most anticipated game last year!

It's basically a popularity contest, and that's fine, the main point of The Game Awards is to celebrate GAMING as a whole.

As a Belgian, I am very okay with Swen (and Larian) representing us. Full plate armor. What a legend.
As a Belgian too, I feel the exact same way. I remember seeing how successful Baldur's Gate 3 and feeling so proud. Now I feel I'm gonna walk in the streets with an armour on.

BG3 is something special. I am sad it is over. It won't happen again. I'll keep all the good memories. At least it happened once. A game was create with the artform in focus, not the economic side of things.

Larian have been pretty consistent with their release quality, sure they don't do much AAA games in general.
So there is hope.
And who know it may have been an electroshock for other studio owner ? yeah that may be just wishful thinking.
But for a relatively small independent studio to win the GOTY, it's a powerful message to the industry.
What makes you think BG4 will be different?
I was not sure about getting bg3 when it came out because I’m not a fan of turn based games but OMG i love this game with so much of my heart it has sparked a love for turn based games I never had before and it deserved game of the year 100%

I am used to only thinking about my Character and the squad just being there and having to control everyone really made me unsure if it wont be too overwhelming (i am not a good gamer) but now i am just here screaming at the screen "why wont you let me put all of my babys in the squad???" 😂

BG3 makes so many dreams become true not only for D&D fans but for any role play game enthusiast with such great characters and profound story embedded in a perfectly living and immersive world. I did watch that, I actually teared up watching them go on stage for the first time during that show!
The Joystick Awards was a joy to watch, it celebrated the gaming community while The Game Awards is one big commercial advertisement for non finished products.
The winners only had 30 (!!!) seconds to express their gratitude and feelings.

Thanks for making many people feel heard/validated and restoring my faith that there's still people out there who make games out of pure drive and passion rather than thinking about the end dollar amount. I've always been a firm believer that if you make a GOOD game, people will want to spend money on it. Most fun I've had with a game in over a decade! Well deserved to everyone at Larian Studios ❤

I have watched every single update video before release! I loved seeing even Scratch there before he made it to the game!
This game released a 30 gb update just a couple days ago. These are people who care about making a game more than they care about an award. I'm glad I've been with them since 2012 with Divinity Dragon Commander and will stay with them through their next endeavors.
Hopefully being more Divinity Dragon Commander because I might be the only fan of that game but I'll kill for it.
I don't think they even expected a game of the year award while making this considering how niche cRPGs have been for so long. Glad they went out there and did their best anyways! And it warms my heart that the world is recognizing their hard work!

First they cleaned out the Golden Joystick Awards, now they cleaned House here too. Success proves them right and more power to them. Larian Studios nearly went belly up over this project and it is SO satisfying to see them stick it to all these greedy, soulless corporations that crap out one bad sequel after another Year after Year. It's almost like a Breath of fresh Air to see OG Dev's like the Crew behind BG3 to have such passion and love for a Project and, by God do they deserve the Praise and Awards they are getting for it now.
It made me emotional to see your passion for the game. To see what great games like BG3 can have positive effects on people really motivates me to keep working on my own little no name game :D
I don't think anyone has managed to pay such an incredible homage to a genre, and a game series before. Ever. Playing this game was a privilege, I get so many callbacks sitting there as a little kid playing the first and second games in the 90's and early 2000s. Fantastic :)

Spider-Man is a great game but hardly innovative. The same can be said about ToTK, it’s great but it couldn’t win GoTY the same year as BG because it’s not something entirely new and creative

I love Spider-Man 2, but the issue is, Baldur's Gate 3 is of such a high quality, it's extremely hard for other games to compare. So it keeps taking all the awards and the other games are left in the dust.
Something similar happened with The Last of Us 2 a few years back; getting all the awards and the other games, sadly, got ignored...
I do think that, when it happens, when there's this one game that is winning everything, there should be some "runner-up" announcement. Like "ok, yeah, we all know Baldur's Gate 3/Last of Us 2 is winning this, but if it weren't for those games that wins everything, which one would win?". I think there'd be value to that, to recognize that the other games are also worthy of recognition.
It was such a well-deserved win, such a powerful experience in gaming, such an awesome flute guy performance, and such a great award show this year.

I’ve been waiting for this game since Baldur’s Gate 2. 23 years. They didn’t disappoint, I’ve never loved or praised a game as much as this one. Well done Larian, stay independent, stay amazing.

Just saw the clips of how the prompt was rushing them to 'Wrap it up' when they were giving their speeches, no wonder it all felt so rushed. They only got like 30 seconds or less :(
BG3: game of a generation. They don't come around often and I'm soo glad I tuned into CohhCarnage one day in June when he mentioned BG3 and decided to check on the game. I had no intentions of playing it because I didn't know about it, but I've been watching a bunch of Critical Role and the D&D bug had me itching for some action. Enter BG3 on a day one purchase and I've played it almost every day since. I love this game, the community is awesome and while I joined the ride late, it still feels impactful and I damn near cried when Neil gave his speech; when the GOTY medley played Down By The River, and absolutely lost it when it was official. So so deserving and today was a good day
CohhCarnage is how I found out about it also. I've never even watched his channel before, but it was in my recommended list for some reason. But I played both earlier games when they came out and loved them so I was super excited about it from that point on!
Baldur’s Gate was an ambitious masterpiece, and deserved game of the year so much.
I love Larian. When I stumbled upon Divinity Original Sin 1 trying to scratch that CRPG itch I was super happy, even read about their backstory. Was super happy the success continued with DOS2. When the BG3 shock announcement and alpha release date was launched, I *knew* it would be a good game. I knew I would love it. But I did not anticipate other people loving it as much. :) I'm so happy for the team at Larian.
Ive never, ever been interested in any type of award ceremonies, this is the first game award I watched because BG3 had such an impact on how games should be made.

My contribution has been more modest. I just keep playing and replaying and enjoying all this game has to offer.
Bg3 was my first turn based game and now im so into them i played xcom 2 after playing Bg3 for 300 hours just to pasd the time till Rogue Trader came out.
Too bad games like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri aren't accessible to new gamers that was my intro to turn based. Not quite like BG3 but definitely very profound game

I was debating getting BG3 back in September, cut to December: over 500 hours in the game and it is in my top 2 of all time and the only reason it’s not #1 is due to nostalgia bias 😂 best decision in my gaming career

Felt the same way watching Larian win GOTY and hearing your story about talking to Sven and his wife about how much you loved the game, even back then made it feel even more meaningful. This game, for me, is the best game I've ever played for a multitude of reasons that go beyond just the gameplay. Sven, Larian studios, the people behind all the work that goes into it, the voice actors, the way they listen to the community... they've set the bar. And I've experienced so much joy from playing the g ame and watching others experience joy as well. Thank you for sharing this.

Been to busy to play but that first week I put 80hrs in and I knew this was my GOTY, seeing their hype on twitter has also been awesome.
OK, let me just preface this by saying that I don't know your backstory in regards to Baldur's Gate, Lua. But your evident passion for the game and sheer joy in playing it is contagious, the game is amazing, thank you Larian for your hard work and respectful approach to us players. And Lua, you have played your part in my (and I'm sure other player's too) appreciation and love for the game so thank you too.
It's truly a gem in an industry rife with greed, they have revived hope in us that grew up when the industry was in its infancy and at least honest. That's when games were passion projects and not cash cows.
It couldn't be more deserved, really happy for them and I hope the suit devs of other games take notes on how to connect with their players and make games that doesn't exploit them and their wallets.

It's hard to overstate how big this is in a year when the sequel to *_Breath of the Wild_* came out - which everyone would be right to assume would absolutely sweep that nomination without contest. *_Baldur's Gate 3_* is an absolute MASTERPIECE of a game and the whole team deserves every ounce of love from the entire gaming community for what they accomplished - but especially in showing that it's worth pushing to make big games like this and taking the time to deliver them.
The fact that you mentioned Rule 34 just made me chuckle REALLY hard. Baldur's Gate 3 is a game MADE for the rule 34 freaks, and they KNOW that. Having played ALL of the Baldur's Gate games going all the way back to 1998, and having played CRPGs for nearly 35 years going back to Questron and the original Ultimas (yeah, I'm old, I know....) this game is the absolute PINNACLE of gaming excellence and Larian Studios deserves EVERYTHING they're earning right now. Having played Early Access for nearly THREE FREAKING YEARS made it ALL worth it! I loved watching Swen walk up on that stage LIKE A FUCKING BOSS in the BAD-ASS ARMOR!!!!

As an Engineer there are many times where I question if people truly care about rewarding attention to detail. The realities of the world can be soul crushing. Nothing is ever black and white. Being amazing at what you do only gets you so far. Then a game like BG3 happens, curbing my cynicism...
I never play RPG games multiple times. The only exceptions: Witcher 3 and BG3. I'm on my 3rd playthrough and am so excited to experience more unique content.

This game... we can see how much effort Larian studios put into it. In this greedy world were indutry saw a lof of potential to gain $$$$ doing shity games instead of giving true gamers what they want more, a nice game, is sad.
I am a deep fan of Monkey Island, Broken Sword sagas, and similar games. These were not really popular and I do not see similar games being released. I am waiting for so long for society to understand we do not need new games every week, but really nice games every year. That's all I look for

Literally learned English by (and FOR) playing BG1&2 back in 2000s.
Your words move me because it is what I have been telling myself... I almost had no hope that gaming world will appreciate passion over greed. That this niche genre won't be popular, ever. Nobody cares about how game as a perfect medium for story even journey to find yourself. More than gameplay itself. But somehow Larian managed all that and more... Makes me hopeful that if there are more who focus on love and art, the world will be a better place.
I share these feelings with you, it was great to see them win, and you react to it. many people downplay these awards, and most of the time maybe thats fair, but this year, with these fantastic nominees and BG3 getting the win, is sooo huge for us gamers, the industry and the example it sets for the future of gaming. It was fantastic and maybe the most important gamingaward in a long time.

I really hope progressively more people will begin to appreciate all the great work indie Studios put out there and support them instead of falling victims to the AAA money grabbers that produce the same recycled garbage every year and sell them as good games, puting more effort and money in the promotion of their so called games instead of paying really passionate and talented people. Hopefully Larian will not soon be forgotten with their grand example and people will never stop comparing every AAA release from now on with what Larian gave us. And i say comparing with AAA because it's true that we can't expect from all indie studios to produce the same level of production value but we certainly can exepect the same and even more from aaa studios. In the meantime, we can always support many of the indie studios who really put their heart and soul in their creations and actually strive to make good games for us.
That celebration scene even looked like it could be a party in the game xD You got Swen with the armor, the lady with the pink dress/hairs and Neil celebrating like crazy in his sick robe ^^
All I want as a gamer is more games like BG3 after Larian blazing trails. Especially that we also have Owlcat and Obsidian, who already made bangers comparable to BG3 when it comes to storytelling, writing and world creation, like Pathfinder WOTR - although less cinematic and with less budget.
AC6 won best action game, and BG3 won GOTY, I'm pleased.

I have spent almost 400 hours in bg3...started already 4 runs AND NEVER I have seen the end ...WHY ??? I do not want this game to end ...NEVER EVER ....I am 55 years old and have played really a huge amount of games ... BG3 is to me the best game of all times in nearly every single moment.
As someone who grew upp with BG1-2 (i was like 9 when the first one came out) it realy makes me happy that BG3 had its chance to shine.
It shows that heart and passion still pays out without greed.
