- I had great intentions of boxing in our consumer unit before Christmas and releasing this as a ‘boxing day special’. Boxing - geddit? Ha ha. Anyway, failed miserably. Not all folks in USA have a three car garage tho many do. My garage just fits my Honda accord but I can’t open the door all the way, I gotta squeeze.
i dont understand why andy went for such a small workshop, if it was my place i would have put a big one up further down the garden. that studio is a bit of an indulgence considering he makes his money from a diy youtube channel. still its his place its up to him.

I help with a Midlands charity, we have a shop and hold events. My responsibility is equipment so when someone says “We need so and so for this event can you knock something up quickly, we don’t need much…” I just KNOW I am in for a lot of work and ZERO comprehension of what has been achieved. ANY good job takes a lot longer than you anticipate. Merry Christmas etc, etc, to you all.
I do DIY jobs for my family and friends, I am always told- it will only take 30 minutes, that usually turns into 3 hours. 😂

I know this feeling! With a 3 and 7 year old constantly shouting, no space left to film my footage it's no wonder my productivity has waned! Great insite for anyone that says 'when's your next video?!'. Also reassuring that as someone who appears meticulously organised, even you have clutter at Christmas 😂. Got to say this is one of my favorite videos. I dont do a lot of DIY but every time i do its like this minus the cameras. Its like doing a jigsaw puzzle coupled with an easter egg hunt trying to find everything needed to complete the task. Worst thing is having to put everything back and remembering where things are that you used and then just left anywhwere because you wanted to actualyy get something tangible done.
'Oh no, my drywipes aren't working, better put them back in the pot until they do' ;P All the best to you and the family Andy :)

For some reason I love how chaotic this is. I recognize a tendency to have too much going on in too small space with too much switching about.
Ii is so easy to underestimate how much time and effort preparation can take, especially for in-home work, where you first have to clear up the mess and dig up the stuff you need before you can even begin.

I can't believe I watched the whole thing!! but it was worth it. I am envious of your control, no cursing. We live in an old house built in the teens outside of Boston (USA) that is space constrained and I feel your pain. To make one or two cuts I have to do the whole set up routine you do, misery makes good company. I feel the pain in your workshop😮. I’m a pedant for optimisation of space but there is a limit when productivity ‘time’ is compromised too much…I think you are at the limit there. But hats off to you!

When someone asks for a simple cabinet I’ll just send them this video…they will never ask ever again. Wow how do you find the inner resolve to even start. I put off jobs that have too many crazy hurdles as they take so long before actually doing the meat. Andy seriously, you are the resolve god!… and it’s all back to normal again…until next time… feel like I’ve done a 25km workout over breakfast.

That was so funny, Andy and I feel your pain. It gives me some encouragement due to the number of times that sort of thing has happened to me and I have the benefit of a double garage as a workshop and no need to film it. You should try making a cupboard in England to cover a French electrical system with measurements given to you by your son! However, DeWalt foldy up kit is so useful. The real life of a YT'r. 👍Have a good 2024 Andy.
My workshop is an attached single garage. It's longish but only 8ft wide so similar to your space. Benches, under storage & wall cabinets down one side & floor to ceiling racking, house battery, inverter, 5 bikes & other detritus down the other with a 3 ft walkway down the middle. If I want to use my table saw, chop saw extension table or saw horses I have to take them out into the front or back garden. Basically you can't swing a cat (& I've got 3 of those) in my garage. Since fitting a roller shutter door I have also added additional storage for timber & long length material hanging from the ceiling where the old up & over door used to be when open. No space in the garden for a shed or a workshop so my garage has to double as both. I'm about to add extra insulation & board out the loft to make room for more storage so some of the less used clutter from the garage may find it's way up there.
Outside working is the way to go 😁 have a great 2024! 🎉
Well, thanks Andy, that makes me feel a lot better, far more like one of my projects, only I would defo have kicked over the cat's water and trod in the food bowl multiple times, knocked something over and broken what it hit and cursed loudly throughout the whole process !
It's easy for us to take for granted the amount of work that goes into these short videos, so it's a timely reminder of what it takes to make great content.
Thanks for all the videos you've made and shared again in the last year, they're always interesting and entertaining, I never miss one, and sometimes refer back for a refresher before starting a job. I’ve given up on my table saw for the very reason you demonstrated there. I use my track/Plunge saw almost exclusively now!

Yep, you do need a new workshop or a storage room so you cover your workshop. When you were making those cuts I thought a saw bench and panel saw would have done it in half the time. Merry Christmas 🎉

Andy you might consider a small monitor screen you can mount on the front of your tripod below the camera so you can see your framing. Still have to get up and reframe your shot, unless you have a helper, but it will still help cut down on your production time. We always used them so “talent” could see how they were framed up. What a palava! But great. Noticed you push the buttons on the table saw to fold / release the legs…just grab the plastic handle type things and squash with your hand it releases that way!

Setting up and messing with the camera takes more time than actually just doing the job you wanted to do, especially planning head to put it to get the shot you want and to avoid moving it too many times, having set my go pro up to capture various bits of work on our extension, I feel this pain!
