Could you use Mt-32 on reg monder PC. Via USB Midi. Cause I would love to get Secret of Monkey Island I loved that game but Sound from Mt32 is the best from videos I have heard I would have run it dos box. But would that be all need is USB Midi and Mt 32 I have no clue about stuff like that but love how Monkey island sound and I love that game but I do think would sound that great on Reltex HD audio on board card dos box idk sorry I just don't have clue
I wanted an MT-32 so bad. It was one of the earliest waŷs into making music yourself at home without huge expense on mighty synths and recording equipment. A computer and this, you had it all lol. At least that's how I saw ît in my pre teen mind. Never did get one but did eventually go the huge expense synths route.
LGR will probably need a different interface card to do that video. The card you sent him is an MIF-IPC card, and it is only reliable in IBM PC and XT class systems. The MIF-IPC-A card (or a clone) is reliable in any PC, XT or AT regardless of system speed. Most MT-32 games don't run very quickly on IBM PC and XTs.
Nerdly Pleasures Well, if you scour eBay like I did last year, you'll find that this is the only thing out there. Now there are only break out boxes for MPU-401, MPU-IMC (PS/2) and a few MPU-IPC-Ts. Nobody is selling the actual interfaces anymore. :/ Now, Clint does have a proper XT and I believe a 286 too, which will run just fine. I did have the same card back in the late 80s and I could run all the great games except for the 3D heavy games, but he should be able to run the classics which defined the use of the MT-32. But yeah, some of the games will be too heavy for the XT to pull, no doubt. And if you saw the latest thrift, he got an USB to MIDI that will work with Dosbox on any modern PC. So all in all, there will be sound either way. :)
Clint, we don't come here for the quality of the camera or the quality of the microphone; It's the quality of your fine duke nukem impressions and the quality of your character that draws us to your channel. c
It's cool the way you can tell that Clint really loves this stuff + how enthusiastic he is. It's always nice to watch someone who knows their subject + shares that knowledge clearly + entertainingly. Happy New Year LGR.
Deponia is pretty much known and succesful, the other games not as much. Although a lot of the lesser titles get bundled and discounted, so many people (like me) should have things like Edna & Harvey in their library. Possibly a hidden gem I yet need to play ;)
LGR, you need to do a video on that B-17: The Mighty Eighth! It's easily the BEST bomber flight sim to this day, because nobody else has ever bothered to make a game that competes with it. It's like an rpg, management, flight simulator. Each crewman has stats and once they die on a mission, they are gone for good. You also need to do some management, like picking secondary targets sometimes because you can't see the primary because of clouds, telling crew to provide medical aid and such.
they still make similar things to these. They're intended for CAD software. Actually pretty useful there if you're very familiar with your cad software.
Your videos are always enjoyable and nostalgic. I constantly either say to myself "I had that!", "I owned that!" or "I remember that software company!" Just want to say thanks for the videos!
I always enjoyed the chip layouts of those old boards, got back into hackiing up old electronics like when I was a kid, except now I know what to do with those neat little chips.
Glad to see someone sent you B17: The Mighty Eighth. Probably one of the best heavy bomber sims ever created. Looking forward to seeing if you'll do a vid on it in the future!
That power mouse doesn't appear to have 'Hands' listed in it's compatibility, looking forwards to seeing more on that one. Also that Amp looks very nice, I love a bit of vintage audio equipment!
Awesome that you got so excited about the new camera and gifts that you just made a crude recording!! That's the real deal man, Clint you Rock!! Thanks for posting:)
Happy new year clint. Loving that your channel is growing. thanks for the laughs on a shity long day also the nostalgia and sharing your passion. You're one of the non pretentious good guys of youtube.
18:10 Blast from the past; my father wrote a simple bat file called 'parkit.bat', and we always knew to run that bat before turning off the computer, even when we were wee lads. I thought it was something that was part of dos, and when I used to try to park my friends computer's HD, they would look at me like I was crazy.
Be careful, Clint. The Super Best Friends tried doing viewer gifts videos, and they eventually got sent so much stuff they couldn't handle it all. IIRC they got sent several items that were worth $500+ and it really overwhelmed them.
I don't make the mailing address public, and I select which things I'll accept from which people ahead of time. Much more selective than what they did.
I"ve emailed him a few times over the years, and he responds fairly quickly if he is not busy, so just shoot him an email. the email can be found at this link donate.thebasingers.com/
I'm kind of young to remember the old ware but I really appreciate the spirit of nostalgia in LGR's videos. I miss the late 90's. It seemed all simple then but I was barely 10. I remember playing on the Windows 98: Jump Start 1st and 2nd grade games, Sim Town, Sim City 3000, and Populous the Beginning.
Ahh I think you're going to love the MT-32. I got one a few years ago and I've got it hooked up and using it with Dosbox. I think you're going to be blown away by the sound quality compared to the Adlib / SoundBlaster. I've done a few comparison videos and it's crazy beautiful.
The ST-225 was my first hard drive. It's one of those that has that lovely chirp when it's accessing. As for the keyboard, a lot of people throw them out because they don't understand that the XT keyboards aren't PS/2 and can't be used with adapters, so they think it's broken.
It came with a code wheel, too. I don't think Clint showed it in his DRM video, but it was a similar idea to the ones he did show. I guess they needed off-disk copy protection because you were supposed to copy the two 360K game disks and play off of those. Apparently, in order to fit in the same space, the saved game consisted of modified state of the original game files. I was too young to begin to understand what was happening in Starflight, but I liked mining minerals.
Great video. Full of treats and good stuff. The new camera seems to work like a charm. A Merry Happy Christmas New Year! Keep up with the good work and outstanding videos. Regards from Portugal.
Love the videos. If I were into soundclipping, this video is a small bit of gold. "This one is heavy, long, and promising. This feels like I thought it would always feel like" LOL
Awesome loot! The video in itself was very entertaining, but more than anything it made me hardly able to wait for some upcoming videos! About the crazy mouse, Roland stuff (so cool,) the Zip-drive... and maybe even Starflight... ;) I'm not one to make requests very often, but that game is seriously something special! I consider it to be one of the greatest pc games ever, but it's something that isn't overly covered on UA-cam. A guy can always hope at least, but seeing that box just made my beard wet.
@ 10:17 I had this game! And I NEVER could get it to work properly! I could take off and fly, but that was about it. When I would try to change positions it would glitch all over the place, and if I kept trying, it would crash. I really wish I could have got it to work properly because it really looked like an awesome game.
I worked with zip drives and later the jazz drives from early to mid 2000's, and haven't thought about them since haha. They are more esoteric than floppies to me, I look forward to your video about it.
Oh my god, i want an MT-32 so bad... huge Sierra adventure game fanboy, and as an audiophile i love the heck out of it, possibly my favorite "MIDI" soundfont of all time.
rzeka "our" lovely Anders is Norwegian though, judging by the label on the "posten", package. And speaking about pronunciation I'm from the swedish west coast and we say it Aandersh, the danes say it something similar to the Anders in Richard Dean Anderson, Onders sounds to me like a northern swedish dialect version of Anders. Never met a norwegian Anders so cant tell you how that sounds (they all seem to have weird double names like Ole-Kristian, Tor-Sindre or Jan-Ingvald).
Nice cam! I have the AX33, I loooove the on-board stabilization it has. The only issues I've noticed are mediocre low-light performance and some jitters when panning in 4K.
Everything I've read about the jitters says it's because of the low bitrate when in 4k, so I mostly shoot in 1080p at a higher bitrate if I'm gonna be moving around a lot and use 4k for the more planned stuff.
Please do something on those old Zip drives. There's so many and would love to see your take on all the different types and history of it. Happy New Year!
Its crazy I was binging your old stuff when this popped up and I noticed you had a copy of Rocket Jockey! I Loved that game as a kid. When I was younger I had an old HP Pavilion desktop ( the one with the cool CD tray built in) and we went to the supermarket it was the Save a lot store. Well when we went to the store I was given my allowance of 10 dollars and I went off to spend it. Well the aisle I always went to was the toy aisle and at the end they had a little rotating shelf with all kinds of videos and Bargain Big box PC games. I would look all the time but most the time it was games I already had until one day I saw Rocket Jockey! There was like 30 of em all thrown on the shelf as the store got a lot of runoff from unsold better store products so they were like 5 dollars each I bought a copy and couldn't wait to get home to try it out. I was remember loading it up and playing it for like 6 hours straight in my room. Those were some good times. I know you probably wont see this especially on a 4 yr old video but I love your content so so much. Your work resonates with me! I love your enthusiam for tech is amazing I also have to say I love your thrifting stuff as well and I have spent many hours in the thrift store with my mom digging around the media and tech sections. I hope in 2021 you are doing good and that you keep getting good things in your life. I only wish the best for you Clint. Your content makes my day keep it up!
Wow the original Starflight. I have SF2 but not that. Loved it on Genesis back in the day. Seeing these old 90's era big box games takes me back. Makes me sad a bit missing those times but its great to see them. I was 18 and met my future wife in 87 when that flight stick thing came out. I kinda still miss ISA slot :)
Nice I think we had one of those RC sim controllers and that game in my technology class. Cool I had forgotten about that, pretty fun from what I remember!
I love the way the mt-32 sounds and I was planning on using it in music, so I picked one up a couple years back on craigslist. My luck, the adaptor didn't work and to this day I still haven't used it hahaha
that mic is actually really good. in fact, I said to myself that you must have done the voice track separate, then you blew my mind a little saying that it was the the camera mic. definitely capable.
I always find it crazy how many chips they put on cards back in the day. I'd love to be there during the brainstorming process where the electrical engineer designed the board. Keeping track of all that circuitry... dang.
17:00 I guess package handling is still rough in your area, like you mentionned a loooong time ago O_O Damn, a card should not bend that way ! Poor little thing. :'(
It's rough everywhere lol I just got a powermac 8500 in the mail and I don't think there is a single piece of plastic un-broken lol the graphics card also fell out and broke some capacitors off the motherboard, im not even sure if any of it still works.
Hmm I remember those memory boards. IIRC I had 1 MB onboard the motherboard of my first PC, an AMD 386 SX40 & got hold of a second hand memory board with 2 MB onboard. It was quite an advanced one, it could be used as EMMS or XMS & IIRC had space for 4 MB RAM. Felt really flash with my 3MB Ram. Kept it for a while, but had to get rid of it when I moved to the UK.
Those Model F keyboards are cool! I recently came across one in perfect condition (in the original box even!) myself and they're glorious. I also got a PC/XT in its original box too, but while it looks to be in perfect shape and has all sorts of cards added, the hard drive barely works, and often needs to start up multiple times to successfully boot into DOS.
The power mouse XD Lol our local computer store had some for sale for about 10 years XD I saw once a bunch of them in an open trashbin near the place though, after 10 years - coincidence? XD
About URU. While the servers were shut down a long time ago, twice now, there is a Community version of the game where you can play with other people. There's also a Single Player version you can buy from GOG. Definitely worth a recommend if you're into atmospheric puzzle games.
"This feels horrible! I love it!"
And that's why we love you, Clint.
That was the highlight for me, too.
Anders is quite generous with his Roland stuff. He sent me an MT-32 as well. I'll be interested to see your take on it.
Oh yeah, he's a really cool guy. Thanks, looking forward to sharing my thoughts!

There ya go, buddy! Looking forward to the MT-32/MPU-401 video. :D

It just like the razer mouse where it have multiple buttons on the side.

Ah Starflight, that brings back memories. One of my first, one of my favourites.
I remember playing Starflight on my old Commodore 64. It was a fun game.
Nice I think we had one of those RC sim controllers and that game in my technology class. Cool I had forgotten about that, pretty fun from what I remember!
Holy crap a MT-32, really lucky!
I love the way the mt-32 sounds and I was planning on using it in music, so I picked one up a couple years back on craigslist. My luck, the adaptor didn't work and to this day I still haven't used it hahaha
I can't wait to hear all of the delicious midis you have to show us, LGR.
Ah I respect a man who appreciates a good pair of slippers! Happy new year Clint!
I have a very small PA Horn speaker made by the same company as that amplifier. Sounds great as an extension speaker for my scanner.
that mic is actually really good. in fact, I said to myself that you must have done the voice track separate, then you blew my mind a little saying that it was the the camera mic. definitely capable.
I always find it crazy how many chips they put on cards back in the day. I'd love to be there during the brainstorming process where the electrical engineer designed the board. Keeping track of all that circuitry... dang.
17:00 I guess package handling is still rough in your area, like you mentionned a loooong time ago O_O
Damn, a card should not bend that way ! Poor little thing. :'(
It's rough everywhere lol I just got a powermac 8500 in the mail and I don't think there is a single piece of plastic un-broken lol the graphics card also fell out and broke some capacitors off the motherboard, im not even sure if any of it still works.
Yeah, I physically flinched upon seeing that... :( The aluminium foil as ESD isn't much better either :D
Just imagine a LGR Museum of retro tech and games. I'd pay to visit it
That is something that's a goal of mine someday.
How are you thrifting at home? This is weird!
Heh. Just one of my special talents.
Oh man I can't wait to see your review on that mouse. It's a beast!!!
And that hard drive. Ah how far we have come in terms of disk storage!
Awesome to see a sealed box of Rocket Jockey... I'm amazed you haven't played it before, seems exactly like the sort of thing you'd love.
XD
1080p certainly looks even better on the older standard 16:10 monitors (Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP).
Ha the way you get excited is so cute. My husband says I get the same way when I get anything retro video game related or Godzilla.
The audio on the new camera is actually pretty damn good :)
Man the 1980s semiconductor industry must have been busy cranking out all those chips for the 3-foot long cards.
this was a great video I really enjoyed it. Clint your so humble.
About URU. While the servers were shut down a long time ago, twice now, there is a Community version of the game where you can play with other people. There's also a Single Player version you can buy from GOG. Definitely worth a recommend if you're into atmospheric puzzle games.
