Throw away the saw & part them off with the spindle gouge. A well made top will spin upside down too, if a there is a small point on top of it's shaft.
That’s actually how I’ve started doing it, when I made this I was new, and nervous around the traditional tools

Tops are great practise, the top turning challenge is to turn a top, spin it and y turn the next one before it stops 😁
That’s usually what I do and they sell pretty well for me

Tombow dual ended, they’re actually made for calligraphy, I’m trying them out cause sharpies burn up too fast for me on the lathe

That lathe doesn't use much power, it not good for big stuff though
