Coming back to the video that introduced me to Starry, which is easily hands down my favourite musical by a country mile, is honestly pretty emotional. Thank you ABD for introducing me to a musical which helped me push through to the point where I'm not a couple days out from moving so I can go to art school. And thank you to the Starry team for making a musical that I cannot describe how much I love in words. Not even sure if this counts because there’s not really a script and it’s never been on stage, but I implore you all to listen to The Raven Locks! Basically it’s about this hat-maker who falls in love with a woman, then immediately gets her killed and goes on a very trippy and ambiguously real journey to bring her back. It’s got a morally dubious protagonist, great themes, and of course stunning music. I can’t put into words how good the music is. If I had to pick three songs to recommend for someone who wants to try out the show, I’d say Solemn Dream, She Was the Gateway to the Empire/Fallen (either one or two songs depending on the version of the soundtrack but I’m counting it as one), and Furthest Star. Honorable mentions go to Bring Her Back (my favorite song in the show), Wasteland (catchy, peppy, and makes fun of the protagonist a lot), and Justice (killer vocals and summarizes the plot from the perspective of the protagonist, the woman who died, and the narrator). Also if you want to know the plot you’ll have to look through these old archived facebook livestreams but it’s totally worth it lol.
Oh man, I've been meaning to give that a look! I've heard a couple of tunes from it (The Same As I being the one that immediately comes to mind) and I've heard some of Dirt Poor Robins' other songs. Good good stuff
I’m glad to have caught the attention of two people already! It’s one of my favorite musicals so it would be super cool if it had a bigger community. I have a playlist on Spotify with the highlights of the show because the whole thing is around 2 hours and I don’t always have that kind of time, so I can try and link it if anyone’s interested (:
@@sofiazazulak8271 That’s a good one but one of the weakest in the soundtrack imo. I’m going to send it in a different reply but lmk if it gets filtered and you don’t see it.
Me: Sees thumbnail “IS THAT STARRY????? IS THAT FUCKING STARRY????” Let’s just say I’m very happy right now. (And seconding that smaller-scale productions part, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen was a smaller musical in NYC and I’m still enthralled by it to this day)
It's 7PM and I'm writing an exam tomorrow in a subject I'm absolutely terrible at and I haven't learned yet. Is this more important? Yes, yes it definitely is.
I absolutely LOVE legally blonde!!! The only time I've seen the musical was also at a small, local theater, so I feel the exact same way about how great even a small production of this show is!
I’d never heard of Starry up until this point, but the idea of the final song being called wheat field and it sounds like don’t fear the reaper? I actually fucking cried okay
Three years later, as a fan of epic, seeing how much love Alex had before it was even out is really awesome, especially of the fact that where Epic currently is, it is almost at the end with the concept albums for each saga. And the artwork is as awesome back then as it is now
I just want to let you know that I've watched this video a few times and, as someone who doesn't watch musicals often, I cry when you get to the artwork for Starry. The expression, concept, composition and honestly everything about it just gets me so emotional and I don't know why so I commend you for that piece in particular.
I've heard about Starry a bit prior to seeing this video, but this is what really compelled me to sit down and listen to it, and BY GOD I'M SO MAD AT MYSELF FOR NOT DISCOVERING IT SOONER IT'S SO GOOD
Man, I KNOW I’m gonna cry like a baby when I hear Starry because just looking at your drawing already made me emotional ;-; Such an amazing composition, it’s probably my favourite art you’ve made!
ABD Illustrates I know you probably won’t see this but I wanted to thank you for not only your wonderful and inspiring art but for a year ago introducing me to “Starry”, as a young artist this musical made me cry it is one of the best musicals I have ever listened too and I do love myself a good musical… I have it’s songs playing on repeat in my head and I don’t want to try and get them out, it brings joy and pleasure to my life similarly to how your art does.
When you started talking about starry- the storytelling, emotional descriptions, character expression, and noting your emotions through the whole listening to the soundtrack got me super emotional for like- no reason- anyone else?? Or just me-
I don't know what kind of music you like, but based on your general aesthetic and the shows you drew I think that you'll really like the mechanisms! they were a British folk band that took myths and legends and repurposed them to make gay grim tragedies in space! They may have disbanded (or "died") at the start of 2020, but a lot of their live shows are still up on youtube and are all a great fun watch :D
Starry became such an important musical to me so fast. I listened to it last summer and immediately fell in love. The Road was my most listened-to song of the year, and it's a go-to comfort song for me now. I got a tattoo inspired by the lyrics, and I spent hours reading and learning about the van Gogh brothers. I still cry every time Wheat Fields comes on, and I just admire the show so much.
Sooo excited! *Plays Starry, gets 3/4 the way through the second song, husband walks in the room. *“Are you watching that Harry Potter musical again?!” Wife: impressed, then explains that cast.
You don't need to worry about being overemotional. I was nearly in tears with your drawing from Starry. I haven't seen it, haven't heard it but YOUR love for it and emotion within it was clear enough to affect me and I honestly wish I could have a print of it.
I've been following you since you were uploading sketchy speedpaints of sanders' sides over copyright-free house music. you've come so far and you never cease to inspire me. thank you!
When you talked about brush strokes becoming interwoven I suddenly realized.. I already heard it before! I love the song and never knew it was part of a musical!
A million thanks for introducing Starry because I never would have found it and I just listened to the whole album and I'm just so amazed. A lot of the songs made me teary but The Starry Night just made me bawl my eyes out. And I just love how the way you drew Vincent with such a soulful expression and that he's full of hope. I love everything about your art and the musical 💙💙💙✨✨✨
Theres a musical about Van Gogh??? Oml I have to check that out, I love everything about him and straight up, whenever I do research on him I always end up crying
I’m so happy that I recognized all the shows! I’ve seen bits & pieces of Epic & Starry, but never listened to the whole things, so thank you for convincing me to finally get around to it!
I didn’t take you seriously when you said the Starry soundtrack made your tear up so I was like “lol, yeah right I’ve never cried over an indie soundtrack, lemme go listen to it” and HOLY HECKING HECK. I know literally nothing about it aside from the soundtrack and I got so freakin emotional over the few songs I found on Spotify I literally had to take a twenty minute break to emotionally recover XD thanks for introducing me to such a great show though, the music is phenomenal!
Oh hon.... the last one was GORGEOUS 😢 like of course everything you draw is gorgeous but i have a soft place in my heart for van gough and GOD!!! THE COLOURS! HIS EXPRESSION!!! A GIFT!!!!❤❤❤❤
That Starry night illustration is just gorgeous - it might be because I'm an artist myself but it really makes me want to check out the musical, even though I'm not much of a musical person in the first place. The art is truly touching and you sound so moved when talking about the song, it can only be great ✨ Thank you for that new discovery !
I'm definitely checking all of these out! An underrated musical that I would recommend is "We Are The TIgers" it's a murder mystery but it has a very peppy feel most of the time (with the exception of a few songs)
I started watching for Starry (I've spent hours listening to Starry Night too, it's just SO GOOD), but when the second drawing started I was like "is this Epic?? Omgs, is this Epic?!?" and IT WAS and I got really excited and ahshdhifkf I love this video
How have I not heard of Starry the Musical??? It's Vincent Van Gogh and Starkid mixed into one, my two favourite things. Definitely gonna check it out and probably cry on the way cause I'm a sap
I HAVE GOT TO SEE EPIC AND STARRY, i’ve always loved greek mythology and I HAVE to watch starry, you pulled me in with wheatfields sounding like don’t fear the reaper by blu oyster cult, which is my fave song! Thanks for the suggestions Alex!
Can I just say, though never being a theater kid myself (thanks social anxiety) these videos of yours always bring out the utmost respect I have for the craft? Like, I got the biggest rush of emotion hearing you talk about all of these musicals, especially Starry. The drawing you made for it was just... so so good. The swirls of colors are gorgeous, and that expression made my chest fit to burst. Your art is just so inspiring. I have so much love for your art style (and a slight jealousy in your skill in drawing guys. I need more practice)
Loved the video! I found the Starry Night musical a couple months ago, and like you I just listened to that one song on repeat for many many hours. I’ll definitely check out the other two! And a smaller musical that you may not have heard of is one called Lizard Boy. It’s got some really great songs, and an interesting, if slightly incomprehensible, storyline. My favorite song from that is A Terrible Ride.
If anyone is looking for a new indi musical to listen to then you should check out 36 Questions! Its a great podcast musical about 2 people, judith and jase. Judith is trying to fix their marriage after she lied about who she really was, while Jaae is just trying to put his life back together. All of the songs are amazing and i recommend listening to "Natale Cook" first.
I had just watched the new concept corner and was looking through your page then realized I never finished this because.. well.. I went off to go listen to starry. and it is honestly my favourite musical I've ever heard. new horizons is def a fave. and starry night, the finale, red vineyard, and take on the world together are some of my other favourites. I wish I'd found it before I'd finalized my theme for my musical theatre exam. may do it next year. gosh that was a tangent gjfdyh
I've fallen in love with your videos, and after looking at how you turn your love of musicals into beautiful illustrations you made me wanna reconnect with that side of me that loves musicals, and honestly, there couldn't be a more perfect way to dive into it for me than Starry, after reading Blue Period I was left craving for more stories where the artist is the main character, and my god, A musical about my all-time favorite artist of which I have replicated multiple pieces of; is this real? I'm extremely happy I've stumbled upon this recommendation!
My god, your artwork always brings me so much joy! I especially love the facial expression you gave Vincent💙 somehow the look on his face alone made me emotional xd
Hearing you talk about shows you love is so cool! Hearing people talk about things they love or are passionate about is one of my favorite things. Especially musicals because musicals are awesome
I love watching these sort of videos, mainly because it gives me more musicals to watch! I've never been a huge theater kid, but between the Halloween video and this one, I've been more and more interested in musicals. As someone who personally adores the Starry Night, I really look forward to listening to the Starry soundtrack. Epic sounds, well, epic!
~Brother we were born with wings~ Stunning pieces!!! Love all of these works (didn't know the last two, but I've checked them out and I'm obsessed hehe) Thank you for introducing me to some 'new' musicals!

The art for Starry is beautiful . This piece was very inspiring to me. Has to be my favorite as well.
I've been following you since you were uploading sketchy speedpaints of sanders' sides over copyright-free house music. you've come so far and you never cease to inspire me. thank you!
I totally forgot you did a piece for EPIC. Also, if you're still following it, THE THUNDER SAGA AND THE REMASTERS OMG
My favorite musical of all time is Hadestown, in my opinion it’s the greatest piece of art ever created
Same. It’s just so magical. The songs are all so story-driven and amazingly written.
@@seineevee so true!
@@kay-sp4gk what’s your favorite song?
@@seineevee definitely Chant, wbu?
I HAVE SCHOOL RIGHT NOW BUT IM SO EXCITED.
I can already tell this is going to be good and I'm not ever 1 minute in
I’m so happy that I recognized all the shows! I’ve seen bits & pieces of Epic & Starry, but never listened to the whole things, so thank you for convincing me to finally get around to it!
Aaaa I’m so happy Starry’s in here, it’s one of my absolute favorites and Wheat Fields makes me cry every time :,>
I didn’t take you seriously when you said the Starry soundtrack made your tear up so I was like “lol, yeah right I’ve never cried over an indie soundtrack, lemme go listen to it” and HOLY HECKING HECK.
I know literally nothing about it aside from the soundtrack and I got so freakin emotional over the few songs I found on Spotify I literally had to take a twenty minute break to emotionally recover XD thanks for introducing me to such a great show though, the music is phenomenal!
Oh my GOD, the way you did the composition for Starry, it, that entire piece brings me so much immense joy
I clicked faster than my sister could unlock my door
Epic being all song feels very in line with how greek poems would have, in theory, been told-
At least their plays anyway
Oh hon.... the last one was GORGEOUS 😢 like of course everything you draw is gorgeous but i have a soft place in my heart for van gough and GOD!!! THE COLOURS! HIS EXPRESSION!!! A GIFT!!!!❤❤❤❤
Oh so true I LOVE Starry it’s incredible!
I know nothing about composition but I do know that the one you came up with for Starry is GORGEOUS
after being introduced to starry i cannot stop listening to the soundtrack but I'm not complaining
Oh I love Starry and you drew Vincent so beautifully! Absolutely agree, it's a wonderful soundtrack
Also, the Starry piece is stunning! It looks so magical and whimsical and I love it.
Starry my absolute beloved-
This art is so amazing omggggg
I was so amazed with the art for Starry I started listening to the musical and now I am in love.
Thank you
I love Epic!! I keep coming back to the songs every so often or find myself humming them because they are so good. The vibes are immaculate.
Gave Starry Night a listen and oh my gosh it’s amazing! I’m absolutely in love with the emotion in it! Very powerful .
Emirichu, Kelsey animated, Ginjaninja, and ABD illustrates all made videos today im going to cry.
Okay I got to say it the Starry piece is one of if not the most beautiful pieces he has created.
Your videos are so calming and beautiful, it's like coming home to hot cocoa and a warm hug
So I finally got around to listening to Starry and sir this was really uncalled for cause now I'm literally crying at work
me:*sees medevil cl0othing in the second speedpaint* c'mon it has to bed epic
*it ends up being epic*
me: YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS
I would definitely argue that it’s not medevil cl0othing, my friend. :)
@@crunchylettuce oh shit-yeah your right-my bad 😂
More Classical/Mycenaean Period, the Medieval period doesn’t start until around the fall of the Rome.
I started to cry just during the first seconds of the first song in Starry
I ADORE these compositions especially the van Gogh one holy shit, they are all amazing but that one hits different
Gosh, hearing you talk about 'Starry' and watching you draw illustrate it was super heartwarming :')
Ohhhh these are so good! Must admit that I teared up a lot with the Starry illustration!
Finally starry having some love! You nailed Vincent's expression, it has so much passion!
I want to rewatch legally blonde now 😩
"Polites, Odysseus' best mate"
This is Diomedes erasure
If I’m correct, Diomedes isn’t in the musical (yet), except for a mention in The Horse & The Infant (“Diomedes will lead the charge”)
~Brother we were born with wings~
Stunning pieces!!! Love all of these works (didn't know the last two, but I've checked them out and I'm obsessed hehe) Thank you for introducing me to some 'new' musicals!
Went and listened to Starry because of your passionate rec. Loved it, cried at the last song, thank you for introducing me!
Man, That Starry drawing is beautiful. 10/10 video
