Marty and Julie, when I was in high school, some 50 years ago and was going steady with my girlfriend, we bought identical shirts and wore them on dates. They were known back then as "Steady Shirts". Today, as I watched you two and your apparel, it brought back many fond memories of my good times.
I am blown away by what Seth said about taking 9 to 10 hours to edit each video!! I am a photographer and after a wedding for example can have almost 2,000 images to cull, then edit and prepare for the customer, which also takes about that long. I can't imagine doing that every single day for a month!!! Such dedication, thank you!! 🙂
I have to hand it to you guys, you're the only channel I've seen out of over 200 that I follow, that incorporates pushups. I feel as if I'm back in Bootcamp. However, given my age, I've exempted myself from defying gravity. Speaking of channels, don't worry, as soon as yours comes up, I watch it with one eye as I'm writing another novel with the other. I like it that you move the action along, after all who wants to watch you put up every piece of insulation,, then seeing you start the job and jumping to the finish keeps us from yawning off. Nice editing and video layovers and all the work you put into this. Major Kudos....
I smiled when I saw the title about why women may live longer than men. I have been watching some of the very first videos you put out about JAVA rides . Martin if you survived driving a scooter in that insane traffic mess in Indonesia, you can survive just about anything! And, also on that note, you mentioned 5 things most people don't know about Indonesia. I was unaware of the coffee . Being a coffee drinker, I went to the store today and bought some Fair Trade Organic Sumatra coffee. I am anxious to try it out! Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching your videos. I had no idea how much time is spent editing...wow! Your family reflects the love of God in each of you.
I've learned some valuable things watching your videos: 1. I could never survive building my own house, 2. Safety Sally is apparently a slacker and not doing her job and 3. It’s amazing how much time goes into filming then editing the videos. Thank you for your dedication to bringing us such enjoyable videos. You seem to really love the snow and I love seeing fresh snow and the sense of peace it brings. I do not like being cold though so any time out in the snow is short for me. Editing time: it's because if a video is 20 minutes, as an editor, you get to watch that 20 minutes segment at least 5 or 6 times while stitching it together. As well, you have to fully watch all the additional shots that never got used too 🤭😀
Martin please have double thinks about roof furnace, I imagine some sort of servicing is required so access would be a good idea, its very up to you but in the upper corner at the rear of the shop in an accessible aired cupboard would have been a suggestion. Cheers for vids happy times from Devon 🏴
Martin has mentioned couple times now, that they were going to put the furnace in a closet at the entrance, but the mechanic said it would be better in the attic, because that is standard, and the mechanic designed all the plans to take advantage of the attic. They're going to have a trap-door to access the furnace, which will only require manually removing a piece of insulation to access. At this point, it would not be feasible to change the location as all the air ducts have been cut and secured at the current location.

I would suggest taking a look at our alumina known as “Lumina acres“. Go into some of his older videos with he’s not doing construction and you’ll see how well his place is laid out. Be sure to check summertime raising of chickens. He does the quick growing freezer chickens but go hatch to freezer ready 6 to 8 pounds in about 12 weeks. He has “chicken tractors“ but he puts the little chicks after the Bruder into them moves daily or every other day until they go into the freezer. He has it very well organized. He also does a couple of pigs, and of course his goats. They share the mama goat with the baby goat so they only have to milk once a day. I like the fact that he’s very strict about keeping the daddy goats in a completely different pen until he’s ready for breeding season. That way you know exactly when to expect baby goats (I think it’s five months pregnancy).
110% agree! They're amazing and have really optimized their process. In reality it's a day in and day out operation of the same thing over and over. We use the 'it all flows downhill' method. Essentially our 'high end' food (living/walking food) gets first attention every day. All the biproducts goes down from there to the garden. Nothing ever goes to waste. Rabbits are a huge bonus IMHO. Best animals I've found to date :)
If you're referring to Al, Gina, and Olivia, is "Lumnah Acres", I believe is who you're thinking about. They are very organized and have a great farmstead building a new 500 acre off grid homestead as well.
Snow falls are much better appreciated in other people's backyards, when viewed from a comfortable situation. That said, your video of the location looks wonderfully seasonal, when viewed remotely.
About having animals on your property, I suggest contacting the folks at Good Simple Living, and/ or Wild Wonderful off grid. I think they could help a lot. Both are homesteading and raising wild stock.
Cog Hill Farm, at the old Cog Hill, had quite a few animals tucked into a small space. Good Simple Living had quite a bit tucked into a (large) residential lot before they moved onto Idaho.

I would suggest Cog Hill Farm - I think you would really enjoy Jason, Brooke and MaryCarl. They just recently left their small farm, and have re-settled on 40 acres. They are building a new home (not off grid, but a barndominium, using a contractor for the metal shell) - they are currently living in a travel trailer on site.

Really enjoy your videos. I like your off grid power set up. High quality components. We are grid tied but one thing I've learned about solar power is that the system really improves in low sun conditions if you oversize the array over the rest of the system. The batteries, inverter/charger are all expensive but the panels are more reasonably priced. We max out our inverter in full sun, but morning , evening and low sun conditions we take advantage of the oversized array. The panels are really the cheapest components. That might help you make a little power on cloudy days. Also I use a long handle pool brush to clean panels when it snows. Rare here in North Texas. Keep up the good work!
Here's an energy saving tip. If you can find an old, out of service chest freezer put it outside in the shade. Pack it with some snow and use it a a frig alternative for the next 3 months or so, In the summer it can be a good critter proof storage for chicken feed, etc if in the shade. Plus every good country house needs some broken down appliances and a ratty old outdoor couch for ambience.
I noticed that Julie is getting better at the push ups. And I think you should get Tux (sp?) a puppy to keep him company when he's playing and running around the property.

Have lamahcas goats. Because they don't have the ears and they don't freeze off. And they are great milkers and good meat goats. They are from I think from Oregon or maybe Washington I'm not too sure but that's where the breed started from. That is awesome. That he passed his driving test. Yahoo. Oh the goat pooh can be used for fertilizer. Also rabbit pooh. And rabbits are very great for up in your environment.

Is the floor insulated too (I guess it would be the garage ceiling)...? I don't remember if you added insulation in the floor 🤷♂️ Seems like it would be a big heat-loss, especially with the garage door open.
Standing the sheetrock vertically on the Tractor forks will work for 12 feet high. Will need to fashion a stop on the forks to prevent slipping off the front. Rent a Hay Conveyor would work as well.

Check out Justin Rhodes farming and gardening. Scale some of their stuff down and have multiple uses for a greenhouse and small barn you can grow your own food year round. Off grid with Doug and Stacy has some awesome offgrid tips as well. Fermenting food is a great way to preserve.

Insulation was one of those jobs I was glad to leave for the pros to do. There is a lot of planning behind ordering, delivering, and insulating a large project. I did a conservative rough estimate for my 28x48 garage with 12' ceilings and finished attic above with vaulted ceilings and figured minimum $5K in fiberglass insulation alone, no fire block, no calking, no Proper Vents. The pros came in double that at $10K but their bid included blown fiberglass which gave me a higher R value in my vaulted ceilings and their product is superior to the big box store, for example the fiberglass bats they installed were R21 while my estimates only accounted for R19 bats in the walls. Their bid was for everything, Polly vapor barrier calked all the seams, fire block, proper vents...etc... it took two crews of guys to finish the job in two days. I was quite happy I did not have to touch the stuff... It would have taken me two weeks and there was no way I could have done a better job than them, plus they did all the planning, delivery and finding the material needed to do the job right. I can say I did all my plumbing, wiring, even sheet rock, but I say leave insulating to the pros you will not regret it.
Just A Few Acres Farm blog pretty well sets up sustainable farm practices from birthing to market. Lots of financial calculations for cows, pigs, turkeys, chicken roasters, and eggs.

Have you thought about going to a propane generator now that you have propane on site. Maybe you could make one auto start when your battery is good to a low cut off.

I personally have worked for a hog producer that raises hogs for a company out of Iowa, It was originally designed for missouri farm assionation - MFA corp back in the 1970's. We feed 1100 head of feeder pigs at a time on ration. All natural outside on concrete / dirt lots. We had 8 big consent huts for the sows/boars , then we had single stalls for the piggy sows and then smaller lots for the feeder pigs. The biggest suggestion i can say is design your set up so your not having to backtrack on location. Have good size pens. We had the sows on the far left side of the lot and weined them to the next lots and then to the final feeding floor to the right. The load out pen with a ramp on the right. A lot of times people make the set where they having to move their livestock lots where they move them from 1 lot on the far left, then move to the far right pen and then to the middle lot. Less distance means less stress on the animals and way more less stress on yourself. Hopefully that makes sense. Love your build and what your doing. Lastly want to make sure where you put them is in area, where you can get to them in all seasons including dead of winter with the snow and muddy season in spring.

Small tip for the ice, if you use lawn fertilizer instead of salt it will not hurt your lumber or ground. In most cases it is cheaper

joel salatin, justin rhodes, lumnah acres are good for organization, regenerative farming... roots and refuge is also good but they've just moved and are starting to build new... great tips for building and known for gardening mostly.
I have not been following long but in my opinion you Two make an awesome Couple and I enjoy what is brought to the Table!

Is the floor insulated too (I guess it would be the garage ceiling)...? I don't remember if you added insulation in the floor 🤷♂️ Seems like it would be a big heat-loss, especially with the garage door open.
I don't know about where they live but where I live it is code to have a insulated sheet rocked ceiling on any tuck under garage below a living space.

Standing the sheetrock vertically on the Tractor forks will work for 12 feet high. Will need to fashion a stop on the forks to prevent slipping off the front. Rent a Hay Conveyor would work as well.

Check out Justin Rhodes farming and gardening. Scale some of their stuff down and have multiple uses for a greenhouse and small barn you can grow your own food year round. Off grid with Doug and Stacy has some awesome offgrid tips as well. Fermenting food is a great way to preserve.

Also when it comes to the Garage with Living Quarters above, there is a specific Code involved for sealing it off 100 % from Carbon Monoxide from below.
Insulation was one of those jobs I was glad to leave for the pros to do. There is a lot of planning behind ordering, delivering, and insulating a large project. I did a conservative rough estimate for my 28x48 garage with 12' ceilings and finished attic above with vaulted ceilings and figured minimum $5K in fiberglass insulation alone, no fire block, no calking, no Proper Vents. The pros came in double that at $10K but their bid included blown fiberglass which gave me a higher R value in my vaulted ceilings and their product is superior to the big box store, for example the fiberglass bats they installed were R21 while my estimates only accounted for R19 bats in the walls. Their bid was for everything, Polly vapor barrier calked all the seams, fire block, proper vents...etc... it took two crews of guys to finish the job in two days. I was quite happy I did not have to touch the stuff... It would have taken me two weeks and there was no way I could have done a better job than them, plus they did all the planning, delivery and finding the material needed to do the job right. I can say I did all my plumbing, wiring, even sheet rock, but I say leave insulating to the pros you will not regret it.
I think you all do a great job. I haven’t missed one and have learned a lot.
Just A Few Acres Farm blog pretty well sets up sustainable farm practices from birthing to market. Lots of financial calculations for cows, pigs, turkeys, chicken roasters, and eggs.

Doing good. Don't feel bad Julie...my tools scatter themselves between the house, shop and camp. They're hard to keep track of.
Maybe when you get a chance you can get or convert your generator to propane and connect to the bulk tank. It's nice not to mess with gasoline.

Have you thought about going to a propane generator now that you have propane on site. Maybe you could make one auto start when your battery is good to a low cut off.

Try living traditions homestead for farm layout
I personally have worked for a hog producer that raises hogs for a company out of Iowa, It was originally designed for missouri farm assionation - MFA corp back in the 1970's. We feed 1100 head of feeder pigs at a time on ration. All natural outside on concrete / dirt lots. We had 8 big consent huts for the sows/boars , then we had single stalls for the piggy sows and then smaller lots for the feeder pigs. The biggest suggestion i can say is design your set up so your not having to backtrack on location. Have good size pens. We had the sows on the far left side of the lot and weined them to the next lots and then to the final feeding floor to the right. The load out pen with a ramp on the right. A lot of times people make the set where they having to move their livestock lots where they move them from 1 lot on the far left, then move to the far right pen and then to the middle lot. Less distance means less stress on the animals and way more less stress on yourself. Hopefully that makes sense. Love your build and what your doing. Lastly want to make sure where you put them is in area, where you can get to them in all seasons including dead of winter with the snow and muddy season in spring.
