It is based on the ethnographic work of anthropologist Trinh T. Minh-Ha with women in rural Senegal in 1981, which culminated in a four-part film entitled "Reassemblage" (1983). The context of my contemporary work is different in many ways, but the project has allowed me to see continuities and shifts in the ways ethnographers/musicologists/documentarians work with women in Africa, how these women, in turn, speak back into these kinds of projects, and the rich conversation between Senegal's rural past and urban landscape can be found in the world of women's aesthetic work. Also, these voices! The singers here are Binta Sarr Diop, her husband Moustapha Dieme and their friend Yaay Diouf, and they were involved in a year or so of planning and producing this work.
