  • this a review of the micca MB42x speakers. these are very similar to the regular MB42's but the MB42x's have a better build and a built in crossover, which supposedly makes their sound quality leagues ahead of the MB42's.

    here is a list of amplifiers l would recommend for these speakers:

    That "hot glue" layered over the crossover is some sort of conformal coating. It "ruggedizes" the unit and helps to prevent tin dendrites from forming. This is normally seen in military/defense applications but surprises me in an indoor consumer electronic device. (BTW, RoHS is pure evil for the longevity of consumer electronics. Removing lead from solder has consequences in manufacturing and longevity. ) So I'm quite impressed that the crossover has a conformal coating. That adds a material and two manufacturing steps - application and cure. Although, it could be a UV cure conformal coating and that can be cured in less than a minute.

      " (BTW, RoHS is pure evil for the longevity of consumer electronics. Removing lead from solder has consequences in manufacturing and longevity. )" where did you see that? l didn't even notice! yeah non lead solder won't kill you but it SUCKS! l never use that shit, it doesn't hold as well and it takes a freaking nuclear bomb to heat it up.

    A very accurate review of these speakers. When purchasing be sure to look for the "X" as mica still sells the MB42. Also I have mine hooked up to the Lepai amplifier mentioned and can hear audible distortion when the amplifiers volume is turned up beyond about 45%. It is plenty loud for me by that point, but I literally blew the voice coil on the woofer of my first pair by playing with too much distortion during the break in version.

    Would these work as bookshelf speakers in a 5.1 set up with 10" sub and 20x15 foot room?

    How are these things for the various Metal generes? I did also get a polk psw10 for more bassy stuff as well. I also plan on running my uturn turntable into an amp that will be connected to these.

      they should do just fine. they sound good with everything but they sound their best in smaller spaces or in short distances. these aren't the best if you're trying to fill a room with sound, at least a room larger than a bedroom.

    There's different versions of the MB42X, the one with the flared plastic port on the back is the latest version, the picture is of the old gen1 of the MB42X. There's been multiple revisions of the crossover, and multiple revisions to the enclosure.

    Honestly, this was a solid review. I'm thinking about using these as satellites for a surround sound system

    So true about the magnetic grills. All of my $500 + speakers don’t have magnetic grills but these $80 speakers do lol sad...

    Very nice review. Thanks! I gave you thumbs up and suscribed!
    I'd like to know if when you analyze buying the Micca you compared them to Klipsch R-14M or Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver which today at Amazon are almost at the same price (Klipsh $99 and Sony $118) would you still think the Micca is a better option among them? Klipsch is magnetically shielded, is Micca also? Also Klipsch has 90dB sebsitivity and 200watts power. Sony could reach a little bit lower freq 53Hz instead of 60Hz. I believe the tweeter of Micca and Sony are very similar and Klipsch uses a horn type, the sound coud be different and probably more natural and soft with Micca and Sony.

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun  6 років тому

      l did not, and compared to the klipsh speakers would probably be better.

    • @JorgeRzezak
      @JorgeRzezak 6 років тому

      you mean Micca are probably better?

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun  6 років тому

      it's possible, the micca's are really good speakers but klipsch are usually better speakers.

    • @JorgeRzezak
      @JorgeRzezak 6 років тому

      The Klipsch is right now at 1/2 of the price, but anyhow it is their entry level bookshelf speaker and could be that Micca is better. I'll try to get some comparison but I will not get crazy because the difference might be minimal. Thanks for your answers and continue enjoying them.

    How different are they from the none X version?
    I'm thinking of using them as surround speakers and if I go with the X version i'll have to pay extra taxes in my country

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun  7 років тому +1

      l would recommend the X version if you're using them alone because they have a better frequency response, but for surround speakers the non X version are a perfect fit for most if not all home theater surround setups. it's usually better to use non crossover speakers for surrounds, because they are cheaper and do a spectacular job of producing background sound effects. so yeah get the non X version. the X speakers would be overkill

      Forgot to say, they are meant to be for the surround (rear) :) I'm using a TSX 150B and TSX150C by polk and front and center

      well when somebody shows hype then show their blindness to faults. when somebody starts off a review and is all excited and immediately says the product is great then l lose interest.
      and l am totally not trying to cover the fact that l am the most boring sounding person. ;-)

      Electronics For Fun You and your review were not “totally boring”...on the contrary, it was “totally interesting”. Kind of like the old car dealer commercial that said. “We don’t have to yell it to sell it!”. In fact based on your review, I just ordered these speakers from Amazon. Thanks for steering me a the right direction. I’m sure I will not be disappointed.

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun  7 років тому

      YES!!!! lol in the audiophile community, naturally aspirated bass is the only kind of bass.

    Micca just released a subwoofer. You should give it a shot

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun  6 років тому +1

      ehh... l would but l am not a fan of subwoofers. l have a million subwoofers (5 to be exact) and l hate all of them l am actually trying to sell 4 of them, l already sold 3.

    • @jackrobertson2558
      @jackrobertson2558 6 років тому

      What didn't you like about them? And is there any you recommend staying away from

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun  6 років тому

      l don't like them because l prefer naturally aspirated bass from my speakers. there is too much frequency bleed with subwoofers, because all of my speakers can hit 40Hz N/A no problem which makes the subwoofer redundant. you're basically it's putting a hat on a hat with subwoofers. l mean all of my subwoofers did what they were supposed to do, it's just that non of them could appeal to me. these micca's are the only speakers l own that l would even consider using with a subwoofer, the rest of my speakers like my kanto yumi's, my BIC america DV 64's and, my polk monitor 4's all do just fine without a subwoofer. l would only use a subwoofer in a large wide open space, but if l am in an average sized bedroom or living room it's just overkill. the point of a subwoofer that l think most people miss is that it's supposed to fill in where your main speakers drop off which means unless your speakers can only go as low as 70Hz or are positioned in a large room, then a subwoofer is just unnecessary. but people add them anyways, even if they don't need one. and l can't stand people who put massive subwoofers in their cars and turn them into a wind tunnel.

      They're pretty much identical to the Dayton Audio powered subs, the Micca ms12 and the Dayton Audio sub-1200 are pretty much identical, probably made at the same manufacturing plant.
