I heard a much better version of this aria sung by him. His battle with the Italian repertoire is very interesting. Sometimes he lost, sometimes he won, sometimes he was simply average (like here). But I heard live recordings where he beat all competitors to the ashes. Studio recordings are not like that. Anyway, he's my the most favorite singer. We are just people.
There are some things he does well, however, this is not it. A lovely man, a great linguist, but why does he not float the tone and create atmosphere?? Where is the charm? I am a teacher and if he did this in front of me we would have a fireside chat. He sounds like an insulted liverwurst sandwich complaining. There is no mastery in this. Compare this to the care he took with Nacht und Träume by Franz Schubert which he sang for his first concert tour and was recorded 2xs. In that piece he floats, he coaxes the phrases. In this performance, he is Sweeney Todd.
