    This spokesman's agonizing over the Edsel introduction was actually a pretty accurate reflection of the uneasiness in the Ford organization over the new car. The speed with which it was canceled demonstrated how shallow the support really was.

      I will say i never knew until watching a few of these Ford Motor internal presentations like this one on UA-cam that the Edsel wasn't just a car, but a fourth brand for Ford (Ford, Mercury, Lincoln). So even more was riding on it.

    On this day in 1957 {September 4th} the Ford Motor Company introduced the 'Edsel' {the company promoted it as "E-Day"}...
    The model was discontinued two years-two months and 15 days later on November 19th, 1959...
    A grand total of 118,287 units were produced...
    The auto's namesake, Edsel Bryant Ford, passed away on May 26th, 1943 at the young age of 49...
    May he R.I.P.

    I think the guy in this commercial is the actor who played the Indian chief Scar in the John Wayne film the Searchers, he was also in Get Smart.

    The car of tomorrow, today!
    Those writers didn’t seem very hard boiled to me. More like the cast of Home Beautiful on a Sunday outing.
    That set had more pastels than Miami Vice.
    They had the Pontiac shield 🛡 before they did.
    Speed measurement device appears as a flying saucer 🛸.
    He took a while to mention horse power.
    Overall not a horrible car. But it just had a some what disjointed style to my eyes. It seems somewhat tacked on rather than flowing in design. As if designed by committee.

    The Edsel was made to compete with Buick and to some extent Chysler however in 1958 all these makes sold poorly due to the economy, the car itself was on par with the medium price cars of the time, but the market was not there

    • @WAQWBrentwood
      @WAQWBrentwood 7 років тому +2

      proofbox And Buick and Chrysler had decades of owner loyalty to resell any one who still had that type of money in that recession (who in better times would have went up to a Cadillac or Imperial). Edsel needed first time medium priced buyers to build loyalty. But those were few in 58.

    • @winstonelston5743
      @winstonelston5743 Рік тому

      Edsel price bracket placed it in the "all things to all people" market segment. The lowest price Ranger was prices against the low-line Pontiac and upper-line Chevrolet, a nicely equipped Plymouth Belvedere or a base Dodge Coronet. The premium Citation was priced against the base price of the Buick Roadmaster or an Olds 98 with lots of optional extras, or a nicely equipped Chrysler Saratoga or DeSoto FireFlite.
      The problem is, the most basic Ranger model with manual transmission and radio delete was priced against a nicely equipped Fairlane 500 and the prices competed model-for-model against better-equipped examples from Mercury and even entry-level Lincolns.
      Edsel offered little more than different trim (remember, Mercury also had push-button automatic in '57-'58 and offered comparable power and torque figures).
      Edsel was aimed at a market that Ford Motor Company had already saturated. This was the last year for the Packard nameplate (Packard cars had ceased production at the end of the 1956 model year, and a '56 Packard Executive was in every measure a better car than an Edsel Citation), Nash and Hudson had fallen by the wayside (but in model year 1958 Rambler outsold Buick). Studebaker was readying a new line of compact cars (the successful Lark)
      There were those who said, "The aim was right, but the target moved."
      I would argue that Edsel's target was the market where Ford had already achieved saturation and the upside-down horse-collar (take a close look at a real horse-collar sometime) and other --- uh --- unconventional styling cues did little to attract product-loyal buyers in the recession year.

    It would have been interesting if they had continued filming to show the press reaction, especially if they had been allowed to ask questions.
    But then again, were those press guys for real, or were they only actors playing roles as members of the press for purposes of this promotional video?

      Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble hawked **cigarettes** for the sponsor of their show, during brief commercial breaks made to sound like content (a technique common then -- same was done by Jed Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies). Such breaks were edited-out once the reruns were packaged for syndication. They plugged beer, too. Find their ads here on UA-cam.

    It just needed to be longer, lower, wider, with far more gleaming crome. Taller fins wouldn't hurt and an "E" hood ornament as well.
    A Diesel engine and a musical horn a larger grill opening and there'd be an Edsel in every garage.
    A small motor bike called the Edselette in the boot would have been the clincher.

    The colors are so off that the car looks like a cross between yellow and green…like a soft lime color. This car is my dream car…I LOVE it for the quirky styling and all the gadgets.
    Also love the thin flagstone in the set’s walls and all the mid-century modern egg shaped planters raised up on little feet.

    So it was that guy’s fault after all.
    Ford had a lot riding on that car and he blew it.
    Didn’t even mention horse power. They just wanted to get behind the wheel.
    They pulled the plug on the Edsel after just three years production.

    Edsel was was a horrible car name for a styling disaster of a car. There was nothing "New" about The E Car except for interior gadgetry and the MEL V-8's; at least the "Forward Look" cars of '57 had dynamic styling along with Torsion-Air Suspension. Knowing that Packard was done for, I believe Ford would've been better served by pushing Mercury up-market and giving it a Halo Car like the the T-Bird; or Capri; or Exclusivity on the folding hard-top line. Mercury didn't even have a model with a Formal Roofline in '58 - but Ford Did? Don't forget, Ford made all their own Glass, they could've done any kind of roof they wanted to...
