My pop drove a 1974 K-100 with a screaming 318 Detroit , hauling furniture "bedbug" for many years, and I would ride along during the summer months. RIP pop
K100 was my favorite truck as a kid. I had one as a toy and it looked so much cooler than anything that rolled around here in Germany at that time. And honestly, it still looks cooler than anything that rolls around here today.
I think it was 73/74 I was a commando (French term) If someone put the wrong parts into a build I followed the build down the assembly line and made it right. I left there and went to Vancouver BC . I was offered a job at the KW plant but never did start. In 76 I took a job with S&M Kenworth in Calgary Alberta. Finished my apprenticeship and received my red seal HD license. Spent 25 years otr trucking as an owner operator with my own rights for North America. KW builds the BEST trucks.
The first K100 in Australia arrived as a kit and was rebuilt in Bayswater Victoria. The “Grey Ghost” still exists as a museum exhibition and is possibly the oldest K100 in Australia.
I piloted a K100e in New Zealand for a couple of years towing a b-train clocking about 750kms per shift. It arrived in the country in bits, was fully rebuilt and had an aerodine added in the sleeper. A good truck to drive.
I still own the 1976 K100 and W900 Bicentennial Edition Aerodynes my Dad bought new in 1976. As well as the 1985 Liberty Edition K100 Aerodyne, Special ordered from my Build sheet.
Since 1971 over more then 70% of the 60,000+ trucks kenworth have made are still registered and road worthy in Australia today. I Also drive a k108 (2008 egr model) it's still a staple icon truck of Australia
Chiropractor's best friend... And as a Aussie. It's not the popularity, it was the greedy companies wanting bigger trailer's and shorter trucks. Resulting in less driver comfort. Regarding the success of the K series. Talking with a DOT officer a few years ago. They wanted to Ban the Cabover, due to safety concerns. Climbing up the side of the cab. But big business wasn't having that either... Oh, try doing Two-up in one. Woke up in mid-flight one day. Then was slammed against the bunk wall. All you could do is laugh and try to get back to sleep.
I can see how in Australia the k100 would be a back breaker but in highway application in the US my 1996 k100e rides better than most conventional trucks I’ve driven of coarse it’s all air ride cab and suspension now I just sold my 1981 peterbilt 362 it was solid cab mounted spring ride suspension and no power steering from the factory and had a wheelbase of 160inches it was a true back breaker no doubt gave you a arm workout
You forgot to mention the gear stick jammed against your left leg while you're jammed against the driver's door, and that you need to climb over the fridge to get into bed.
BJ and the Bear was my favorite show growing up that made me want to be a truck driver, but of course things change i joined the military instead…..now retired.
My Uncle Bob was a trucker for almost 50 years and always drove cabover Kenworths. I remember him taking me for rides numerous times and I always felt like we were the kings of the road. He always wanted to see me become a trucker too, but I was always scared of driving a vehicle that large.
If you could stand riding shotgun, you could have handled driving one. I've been driving trucks for almost 38 years, but I get nervous as hell if I have to ride with someone else.
You should make a similar video showing the history of the T800. Perhaps it is not the most popular KW truck in the US but down here in Mexico was definitely an icon, a legend. Manufactured for over 30 years and just last year the final unit rolled out from Kenworth's Mexicali assembly plant. First truck to introduce a full aerodynamic cabin design using PC tools. The mighty T800 needs a video as well. Hope you consider it for near future. Regards!!!
Love driving the K100 mod in American truck sim especially with a straight pipe engine sound mod installed. Jake braking is beautiful especially with the window rolled down. Those look sweet but i rock an anime girl paintjob on mine
Most versatile, best riding and handling KW...Setback axle T800 aerocab sleeper with air ride cab and sleeper, N 14 red valve cover (factory 500hp) Cummins, 13 speed double overdrive Fuller transmission, 8 bag air suspension frame, 245" wheelbase, twin screw Eaton rears. Unlimited variations available to be built. Very few Kenworths are identical unless they were fleet ordered.
The B.J And the Bear rig was a special kind f truck, and the Smokie and the Bandit rig the origianl one was an iconic truck, every body wanted one of those.
You're right, it does sound like a challenge! But with modern engineering, even 'brick walls' on wheels can be surprisingly aerodynamic. It's all about redirecting and minimizing air resistance. The science behind it is quite fascinating!
Drivers killed the cabover here in the states. We got fat and lazy and didn't want to constantly climb the side of the trucks to enter. The ease of maintenance and ingress/egress into the cab was also why we stopped buying the cabovers.
You didn’t mention the 2 KW plants in Canada. 1 in Vancouver British Columbia that built conventional and large off road logging trucks with water cooled brakes and the Sicard/Kenworth plant in St. Therese Quebec where we built cab overs and Hustlers both KW and Peterbilt. I worked there for a year and a half.
Good to know. Do you have some photos from the factory? When did you working for that plant? Like to see private photos from the factory workers, employees.
A 1976-84 K100C Aerodyne VIT, with the oval quad-headlamps, was the alternate form of Transformers Generation 1 Decepticon Stunticon Leader Motormaster. Black and chrome and purple and all kinds of menacing sexiness. Prime still beat him, though.
Interesting topic but I think this video missed a golden opportunity to go into more details as to why this legendary cab over was killed by U.S. Government regulators. What were the driving forces behind it and why was Australia for example, able to ignore those kinds of concerns? The cab over design seems to be so much better at least for short haul intercity trucking where space is more premium. This also seems to be the way most trucks are built in Europe...
I'm a cat fan I mean Kenworth fan but I hate when they meaning Kenworth fans or peterjunk fans they have trucks that are untouchable then down talk other trucks knowing the mack an western stars out shine them in the woods on gravel In the oil fields etc. see me I respect another man's truck regardless the model
My grandpa had a big V8 mack putting out 870 HP no kitty cat couldn't keep up id say Kenworthless or peterjunk but they just slap a sticker on it while another man makes the engine. It be like owning a Chevy 1500 but a John Deere engine in the fucker
I full heartedly disagree. A company stuck with models from 1961 with zero engineering creativity to design something new and better. The K300 being a modified Volkswagen Transporter and the K500 being a modified DAF XF are a testiment to that. Any European truck company (Scania, Volvo, DAF, etc) would make Kenworth look like the manufacturer of Flintstones era trucks and nothing more.
K300 is just a Volkswagen Transporter, and the K500 is simply a DAF XF. 😂 Kenworth is stuck in 1961 with zero creative and engineering capabilities ever since. 🤌

Euro trucks have always been rather bland and sterile I think
@@eamonquinn70 mostly yes, the only "manly" truck I remember from the older euro trucks is the Volvo f10 and f12
The cabovers are so cool.
To me Kenworth's are the best trucks in the world.Long live kenworth.
Scania or Volvo IMO. European Volvo I mean
Yeah, Pete's are overrated
I like more peterbilt ❤❤ 352

88 K100. My favorite truck ever. First truck I ever owned. Retired now but I'm looking for a nice one to get and keep till my time is done.

Cabovers & aerodynamic don't belong in the same sentence, how can you make driving a brick wall go better through the wind?
You're right, it does sound like a challenge! But with modern engineering, even 'brick walls' on wheels can be surprisingly aerodynamic. It's all about redirecting and minimizing air resistance. The science behind it is quite fascinating!
My company is only 1 year younger than KW, still family owned, they just got me a brand new T-680 in June
Wow, it's great that you're sharing that experience. Best of luck on the road! Greetings!
The K100/200 series are also very common here in NZ.
I would have hoped they would have included even one picture of the second most famous K100 in America, the iconic Hanks Highway Hilton.
The DOT killed cabovers. 😢

The twin steer K100s and K200s are my most favorites. Twin steers allow more cargo to be carried but thst doesn’t help with turning.

Really not many people mentioned about Optimus Prime!?
The window on roof were for when u went over a bump you could see where you were going

You tossed a Freightliner in there.
Of course, you can truly tell a trucking story without talk about a freight shaker
