Glad I Found Out About KROIL Penetrating Oil

  • Have you guys heard of Kroil Penetrating Oil?
    The steering column on this roller is designed to slide all the way to the right or left side of the machine.
    After spraying the bar it’s slides on with Kroil, there’s a huge difference on how easy it is to slide.
    I had never heard of Kroil until a Cat mobile mechanic came out to the job to fix my skid steer and he was using it- he told me it’s the best penetrating oil you can get.
    I wanted to change the wheels on this trailer, so I sprayed the lug nuts with Kroil to let them soak.
    A couple hours later I backed the trailer into my garage to switch them out.
    These lug nuts came off relatively easy with my quarter inch impact.
    A friend of mine had a set of used rims and tires that are the exact same as the ones on my trailer and offered to give them to me, and I was glad to have them.
    Kroil’s been around since 1939, they say it can penetrate into the smallest spaces.
    It has an interesting smell- reminds me of cherry flavored medicine. ‪@hausplans‬

      How Does it compare to PB blaster

    • @DG-kq8zf
      @DG-kq8zf Рік тому +8

      @Gabe M. from what I've read in the chat, they are equivalent. I've never used PB blaster. If it is indeed equivalent, I'll have stopped looking if i found that first. But i found kroil, first.
      For example, from experience;
      Take a stainless 8-32 machine screw about 2 inches long, attach something to a ¾" plate of aluminum, take acid, caustic and sanitizer and splash that on the dissimilar metals. The stainless, being very noble compared to the aluminum, is unaffected. The aluminum, on the other hand, does its best to disintegrate, swell, bind and lock the screw into place. With kroil, working the screw back and forth, it will give and not gall. I've even had stainless nuts gall on stainless bolts. That situation is almost never recoverable. Kroil is the only thing that gives me hope in that situation. But, like i said, if i came across PB blaster first, i might have not had to look any more. I will stick with the kroil. But if i had a can of the blaster, I'd try it out.
      Edit: only changed 'slash' to 'splash'. My phone has a rough time 'P'eeing.

    I've been a professional mechanic for 4 decades. I've used pretty much every penetrating oil out there. The 2 best products, BY FAR, are Kano Kroil, and Brute Force. I'm fairly certain they are the exact same chemical, just marketed under different names.
    The only drawback is that they are VERY expensive. One standard-sized aerosol can can cost over $20. I recommend getting a chemical rated squirt/spray bottle, and buying the 1 gal. can. You'll be less likely to just saturate the exposed area of whatever component you're trying to free up, so the product will last much longer.
    Saturating parts, where 99% of the chemical ends up everywhere EXCEPT where you need it, is the single biggest waste of penetrating oil. You have to learn patience and let the chemical soak in to do its job.

    I was a technical expert (engineer) for three different major industrial manufacturers. At the divisions I worked for I was the in house lubrication expert. I've conducted extensive tests on different lubricants and penetrating oils. Most of the premium spray products performed well but each had certain qualities that made them preferable for different application. Like easy on human skin, easy to clean up, better in the cold, and even favorable scents. The other main takeaways is the importance of shaking the can. Otherwise the anti wear or lubricating ingredients sit in the bottom of the can and all you're spraying is the solvent carrier. Next takeaway is more is not better. Most people use about ten times more spray that necessary. Once the surface is wet with lube, that's enough. By the way I own cans of almost every brand of lubricant but my two preferred brands are Duralube spray, and Tri-Flow.
