  • Last summer, I was contacted by Exo Mtn Gear regarding a trial run of their K4 prototype pack system. As a pack geek, I had to get my hands on a K4 prototype and put it through the paces throughout my 2022 Hunting Season. Here is my experience and thoughts on the new Exo K4 system.

    So many "reviews" are really just promotions for a given company and falsely give the impression that the product is the greatest thing on the planet. I appreciate you not skipping over the negatives you experienced whether they are a problem specific to you or an issue with the product itself.

    Your review of exo packs is a big reason why I have one! Worked great last year. Carried 3/4 of an elk in 3 trips 1 mile up out of a hell hole to the top of a ridge. Plus a 6 foot black bear sow rug and skull out of same hell hole. Few days before. It's a great pack. Love it! We'll worth the money. Spent a lot on eberlestock packs prior.

    Been looking into EXO for awhile now. I’m on the shorter side (5’9”) and have had issues with packs fitting right. Got friends that have previous versions of the EXO packs and swear by them but they’re all 6’ plus. I do think I’ll get the K4 5000. Appreciate the honest review.

    Man what a great review. Do you have a sciatic nerve issue? I have that issue in my back so it’s something to think about for me. Lastly you have this setup and kifaru’s new ark frame with your bag of choice which pack you going with?

    Thanks for the review. I had the K4 5000 with the 25” frame. I am 5’ 10” at 160 pounds, athletic build and broad shoulders. The quality is first rate. The storage organization ability was outstanding. The belt was the most comfortable I have experienced compared to 5 other manufacturers. The shoulder harness padding was good too. However, I had minor issues with the shoulder harness. After numerous adjustments, I could not get the harness to fit my shoulders as compared to EXO’s video and by observing your wear. The top slot on the harness is near the top of my shoulder as opposed to it being at the top of my collar bone like yours and the fit video. Nevertheless, as adjusted for comfort, with 35 pounds, the pack was comfortable on a five mile hike. Although, with 50 pounds, all the weight was on my hips. The pain was excruciating. Walking was painful thus difficult. I had to stop after 2 miles. Adjustments didn’t help. I consider my self in good shape. Maybe not. Or perhaps I did something wrong. Any suggestions?
    Thanks. Be well. Be safe.

      @@baileys6346 I got a smaller EXO gear pack and acknowledged to myself I had to carry less. 45 pounds is the max I am willing to carry. But, that is just me. Others carry much more without issue.

    What are your thoughts on the K4 5000 vs. the Stone Glacier Sky 5900? I love the convertible design of the Stone Glacier, but the K4 looks incredible top to bottom. Just a bit more expensive to buy a load crib while the Stone comes with a meat shelf integrated.

  • @dirtfishingdad_2_34

    Good video.
    I love my k4 5000 so far. Admittedly I have only carried 80# a few times around the neighborhood and 30 miles of shed hunting with 25-30lbs. The belt and shoulder straps are super comfy for my body type 5’9” and 230lbs ie fat and round.😂
    Does your SG have a narrower belt which solves your pinching/legs going to sleep problem?
    I feel like packs are a little bit like boots. Everyone wants/needs something a little different to fit them correctly and do the job comfortably.
    The good news is they hold their resale so if a high end pack doesn’t work out like you would like you can usually sell it for a decent price.

    I experience the same hip issue with my SG Sky Tallus 6900. I get pins and needles and it feels hot so I have to loosen it or jump up to raise the pack then re tighten. I am toying with the idea of getting the EXO 7200 to see if I could get some improvement. Perhaps the EXO frame may make a bit of differece. Got to tell you it's annoying. Great reviews by the way.

    Did you ever consider the K4 7200 since it's only 2oz more weight and packs down pretty small? Would be nice to have that huge amount of room f you needed it. Trying to decide which one is the best.

    • @b.c.g.9754
      @b.c.g.9754 5 місяців тому

      My thoughts exactly. I have a Kuiu 5200 icon and it was maxed out. I thought if I get another pack I would go with the biggest because it would compress down to as small as I need it while hunting and you wouldn’t notice the weight difference.

    • @gcruishank9663
      @gcruishank9663 5 місяців тому

      @@b.c.g.9754 I bought the 5200 and took it on a trip, winter camping, and found the same thing….ran out of room. Then Exo had a sale and I ended up getting the 7200 as well 😝 since you can just swap them out. The 7200 does pack down really well in case you’re thinking about it and need a ton of room and you can handle the weight.

    Luckily I don't have to hike for miles like you do !!! I haul a cart with me and put the entire deer on it. If we get multiple deer then I put two deer on the cart. I bought the biggest one I could find and I always hunt on the top of a hill so I walk down.

    Now that I’ve actually packed out an animal with my K3 4800 I’m not super impressed for the cost. Kind of annoyed they didn’t make the K4 bags backwards compatible with the K3 frame. I’ll probably explore other brands if/when I decide to make a change.

    Thanks

    • @SamongOutdoors
      @SamongOutdoors  Рік тому

      The K4 is a bit more flexible, but that is not an issue with either pack. They both move with you as you hike and rotate in different directions. Neither restricts your movement. That is one category that you can check off with both packs.

I remember the breakdown of your last pack comparisons and was actually thinking of buying into a used pack..... Low & behold, you have K4 review . I haven't seen the video yet but It'll be interested hearing what you have to say about it... I hope it's not a bunch of hype just because you're able to try the the prototype...
