A beautiful, powerful poem about a champion of the Lord who now cheers us on with the rest of the great cloud of witnesses! Thank you, J.ournal , for honoring Fr. Jerzy, one of my heroes.

History repeats on this side of The Pond. When the phrase "I want to be like Christ" is uttered, this man, Jerzy, is remembered and hopefully mimicked.

I was at his funeral with my former schoolmates because his church where he used to preach and where he was buried was in our neighbourhood, just 5 minutes walk from our school.
The streets around the church were packed by enourmous crowd of hundreds of thousands of people.
I got separated from my friends. People behind me were pushing forward but the ones in front of me had nowhere to move. At some point I was squeezed so much that I couldn't breathe and for a few minutes I thought I was going to die there.
Yesterday's Halloween stampede in South Korea reminded me of that incident, so I searched for Popieluszko and found this video.

Precious treasure to remember those who LOVED freedom and were willing to die for it. I have a Solidarnost poster, and a Romanian flag with the center Soviet emblem cut out, on the day freedom came. ❤

They made 2 films of him: 1. a Hollywood version in 1988 with Christopher lambert and Ed Harris and, 2. A polish version in 2010 with archival footage included into the film. A documentary of him was made in 2013 I think

In a parallel to my disdain for Texas as a place to live (too hot/dry) but appreciation for many Texans, I hold little love for Catholicism, but have grown to respect many of that church. It has been opined that Catholic isn’t Christian. It seems to me any church (in the Revelation 3-4 sense) would have had similar problems when wedded to government so early in history. The Baptists are not immune to abusing power, and Catholic Church members have done at least as much good as the collective church has done harm. May the Lord bless you - 2nd Timothy chap 2 verse 25.

Thanks for these thoughts Gregory. I'm in agreement with what you said about Catholicism being wed to the government, and I think that was a large part of the "darkness" of the dark ages. Faith is not meant to be forced. But from everything I've seen from Jerzy and read about him, he sought the truth and spoke it.
