Back in the 1950s and 1960s, Dallas used to be an engineering town. Richardson, a Dallas suburb, had one of the highest concentrations of residents with Masters and PHDs in the U.S. As a result, one of the top 10 greatest inventions of all time as far as its impact on mankind, the fully integrated circuit, was patented at Texas Instruments (TI) by engineer Jack Kilby in 1958. He later went on to win the Nobel Science prize in 2000. He and two other TI engineers invented the handheld calculator in 1967. The Collins Radio engineers tested one of the first satellites, Echo #1, for NASA in 1960, and then designed and produced the telecom equipment for the 1969 moon launch. In 1962, Ross Perot created the computer services industry. Lastly, the ATM was invented in Irving at Docutel in 1969 by Don Wetzel. This all took an enormous amount of engineering talent, and created wealth and jobs. This is why there are almost 8 million people living in the DFW Metroplex.
