    Born in Beijing and formerly a pipa soloist with the Central Orchestra of Chinese Music, Cheng Yu is a renowned virtuoso on the pipa (lute) and guqin (zither). She gained her BMus (China), MMus and PhD (SOAS University of London) degrees in pipa and guqin performance and in ethnomusicology. She is the founder of the UK Chinese Music Ensemble (1998) and the award winning Silk String Quartet (2006). She performs regularly both traditional and contemporary music and has initiated many cross-cultural music collaborations for the Ensemble and the Quartet.
    Her project to recreate the 5-stringed pipa (lost since the 8th century) with new music has won her awards from ACE, AHRC and Women in Music. She currently is based in London and teaches the pipa and the guqin at SOAS.
