it should be noted that this performance was released prior to A Lazarus Taxon as part of a DVD series produced by Brendon Canty of Fugazi called Burn To Shine. each volume takes place in a different city and features artists from that city performing throughout a single day in a house that is destroyed afterwards. volume 2 takes place in Chicago and features in addition to Tortoise the following: Pit Er Pat, Wilco, The Lonesome Organist, Shellac, Freakwater & others.
My boyfriend, Jakob, has played this epic clip for me so many times, and I still get this hyped in oh so many ways. Thank for this music, and PLEASE come to Denmark now.
Super Hot! Jeff was my old roommate at Berklee, and we have recently reconnected. I hadn't heard any of Tortoise, So this is really blowing my mind! In a lot of ways. thanks Jeff :) Peace
Everytime I listen to this piece, I receive goosebumps and almost well up in tears...it's so intense. I feel the buildup. Such a narrative piece but this is just what I hear.
this band rocked my world in late 90's ,post punk and shoegazer with a pure jazz element, such a shame that the pop world missed out on such an awesome band
This song reminds me of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention Its nice to know there are still bands playing complex music like this, a feast for the ears
Something about this song reminds me of a cool day at the end of summer... Perhaps you can only play this kind of song with this much intensity on a cool day at the end of summer...
Don't hate! I haven't heard Do Make Say Think but I've seen Mono and Tortoise and both are are doing amazing things in the world of music. They play different styles of music and both play their respective style exceptionally well.
John recommended Ludwig, and Ludwig only. He told me at a show. Sorry don't know the dimensions of that particular snare. Ludwigs supraphonic snares are awesome, highly sensitive.
If you like Tortoise I totally recommend checking out Isotope 217 if you haven't already. It's Dan, John and Jeff from Tortoise with extra jazz. Fucking awesome.
I guess the joke went right over my head, but like I said. I love both, but they're two completely different bands. I've been following both for over six years now, and I can enjoy both for what they are and honestly I don't prefer either. I accept them for what they are and appreciate them for that as well, and that's about it. From certain aspects Tortoise might be better but from another point of view I could say the same for Mono. It's all good music, and that's all I care about.
there are not words to describe how cool this shit is.
This is the kind of music more people need in their lives!!!! Jeff Parker is amazing
There is nothing quite like Tortoise, is there.... Man, their music has made me so damn happy for so many years.
saw them in New Orleans before hurricane Katrina. They are even more amazing live.
Agreed.

John’s facial expressions at 2:51-2:58, 3:12-3:18 & 3:30-3:39: priceless
These are workers in music - in a cramped room with equipment and instruments around, unshaven, they are hard at work. Great piece
I would love to be in that room, taking pictures or just listening to them play.
Super Hot! Jeff was my old roommate at Berklee, and we have recently reconnected. I hadn't heard any of Tortoise, So this is really blowing my mind! In a lot of ways. thanks Jeff :) Peace
Curtis Prince NEAT!. Tortoise is freakin' HUGE in the indy world...Part of the great triumvirate of the 90s Tortoise, Stereolab, and High LLamas...
Curtis Prince Oh, and Jeff IS TNT (IMO)...
He's kinda the heart of that whole album....And it's still my favorite of theirs!
Ash Bell Yeah? Dig it! I'm just getting to know Tortoise. I luv Jeff, he's always been one of my fave players,.. and Dudes!

I saw them for the first time in Asheville,NC. One the most beautiful music around. YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT!
Yes, the studio version is from It's All Around You, but this video is on the dvd included with A Lazarus Taxon.
This band will always hold a place in my library. I own everything they have put out. The complexity of this track is badass.
the bass sound is incredible!
Speechless, words can't do justice to this

That guitar lick that comes in around a minute in is so buttery.
Something about this song reminds me of a cool day at the end of summer... Perhaps you can only play this kind of song with this much intensity on a cool day at the end of summer...

This is the real post-rock, not that boring EITS or Mogwai stuff!
my tortoise loves this band

I didn't know the Hotcake (well, plus the moog ring mod) could sound so raunchy and ... awesome.
thank you friend
Great!

Also Matthew Lux on bass and Sarah Smith on trombone.
And Rob Mazurek on cornet.

Very Soft Machiney.
xylafone is epic!!!! hahaha dam man looks fun
This song is actually from their 2004 album, "It's All Around You," not "A Lazarus Taxon." Excellent video!
Not often enough!
@8iamretarded8 yeah he's the man.

Qué escándalo
Their passion is so sexy

@dentpopcan This is actually Tortoise

hey wow, why didn't I know those guys :o
And the sacry thing is that their live shows are BETTER.
I can't agree with you more
17 people got serious problems
I think this version is better than the studio original, without a doubt.
Both versions are great!!!!!
whats the genre of this band..........great music by he way........peace
@idektron mike dillons go go jungle. dude rips on the vibes.
the snare sound awesome...anybody knows the measures and the tipe of wood??
The wood is from trees
@humeanesque it tottaly doesn't matter how you look, just play
i have not found a better band than this or shellac or stereolab
i like the drumers face when he raealizes its a bit faster :)
They're a tad better than Dream Theatre I reckon!
tu que estabas haciendo el 15 de Julio del 2007?
They are completely different, they sound similar because they have the same instrument and the same genre, but they do different notes
