One of my favorite things about “The Wild” is how they perfected the blend of designs that are so realistic with human-like facial expressions.
To understand what I’m talking about, let’s look at another film.
The 1994 version of “The Lion King” is rife with facial expressions that are human-like. On the other hand, the designs are rather cartoonish and aren’t THAT close to the real animals. Take Shenzi, Banzai, Ed, and the other hyenas, for example. They have timber greyish fur, but real spotted hyenas are usually brownish with black spots. They only appear as greyish as a juvenile.
The 2019 adaptation of “The Lion King” nails the designs in terms of accuracy and closeness to the character’s real life counterparts. As for facial expressions and emotions being shown, there isn’t much to say. You need to be something of an animal expert to know that there are emotions being expressed using subliminal details. For example, when a lion pins its ears back, that means it’s either agitated or upset. They used that in the film, but isn’t as expressive to us as furrowed eyebrows or a conspicuous frown.
Then there are the very rare movies that get both realistic deisgns and human-like emotions just right. “The Wild”, “Happy Feet”, and “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole”. Those movies have designs that are so lifelike and convey emotions and facial expressions that many different audiences can recognize.
Me and my friends reenacted the final battle from the wild In theatre class. I just ordered a lion mask with a moving jaw from amazon since I was playing Samson. My best friend couldn't find any wildebeest masks on amazon so he just used a latex cape buffalo mask instead. Cape buffaloes and wildebeests do look alike a little bit so he had to go with what he could find. We all got A+
