Howrah to Rourkela via Ranchi: Ranchi Shatabdi and WAM4 Ride

The first part of a thoroughly weird trip! In the company of the incomparable Pramit Mitra, the two of us decided to travel an extra 300 kilometres (12 hours) through the state of Jharkhand, to reach Visakhapatnam from Kolkata. The reason? Not because we did not get tickets, but because we wanted to do a ride on the Tatanagar WAM4 before the Indian Railways starts phasing them out completely. Hence, we took the Ranchi Shatabdi to Ranchi (Muri for me), and subsequently embarked on the Dhanbad Alleppey Express for Visakhapatnam.
Key highlights of the trip include a brief parallel action with the Ganadevta Express as we departed from Howrah, a blistering crossing with the Howrah Rajdhani, a wonderful crossing with the Alleppey Dhanbad Express with a TATA WAM4 , and passage through the lush green Chhota Nagpur Plateau and Chhota Nagpur Hills.
A special mention to Pramit for accompanying me on this journey and providing me with wonderful company. This was our first journey together and I will remember it for a long long time. Also briefly featured is Sayantan Banerjee, who bunked his M. Pharma classes in BIT MESRA and came to meet us at Ranchi station.

We need to preserve WAM4 engines and utilize them for passenger trains. WAM4 gives good enough performance for operating passenger trains at 100 kmph. All the brand new engines like WAP5, WAP7 can operate express, superfast express, duronto, shatabdi and rajdhani express trains.

Thanks a lot! Hatia-Rourkela is completely single - they don't even seem to have any plans to double this stretch any time soon. Passenger traffic is very low.
