If you do decide to purchase the game here's a detailed review of the DLC options to give you even more Frostpunk.
Even when not playing Frostpunk I'm constantly thinking "I should have done this" or "I'm going to try that next time", all with the soundtrack at the back of my mind. A genuinely awesome (harrowing!) experience I recommend you try.

I agree its a great game, What i would like to have in Frostpunk 2, More law books. Maybe different civiliziations with different perks. So that strategy becomes more important.
I could also see a multiplayer option where the goal is to make your opponents civilization riot, steal their recources or find other ways to win the game. While the storms continue.

@@pr0use all of those would be an awesome expansion of the original Frostpunk. I did find the laws became repetitive after multiple playthroughs so I hope they mix it up without losing what made Frostpunk special / horrific!

One of the greatest OST's ever made. Not some 4 hour ambient dump, a true modern classical composition.
One of the greatest tutorials as well. You're never lost. Your decisions are transparent and easy to understand.
Allocation choices always make sense. I think it's one of the best advancements in UI's in a long time.
There are so many games I can't be bothered playing because their UI is so bad.
You can pick this game up any time and drop 20-80 hours easily. I imagine I'll continue doing so for years to come unless FP2 blows it out of the water.

The answer is always YES when it comes to FrostPunk. They perfectly captured the feeling of desperation, grime, and despair not only with the graphics, but also with the soundtrack. The DLC that added building the generator in Endless mode, and The Last Autumn scenario was the cherry on top of an already perfect game. If FrostPunk 2 somehow fails, it won’t really matter, because this one is perfect.

I like your review format, I've been on the fence for this game quite a fair while now and was unwilling to take the blind leap predominately due to the standard price for the GOTY edition. Now with the sale on steam, I figured I'd look into this game a bit more to ensure I'd not regret jumping in completely blind to the rudimentary mechanics and to confirm my suspicions about whether this game intrigues me enough to sink some spare hours into it when I have them. This is precisely what I was looking for in terms of an unbiased, quick, yet adequately detailed explanation of the game-play experience as a whole. Spectacular work, look forward to seeing more content from you in time. I love it, it requires genuine forward thinking and planning.

One of my biggest gripes with This War of Mine (the studio's previous game) was that there was very little variance between playthroughs. Once you learned the basic trick to survival, that strategy worked every time regardless of characters or settings.
Does this game feel like that too? Or does it feel like depending on the rng, you have to do very different things to survive? I personally like it when one strategy can't solve the game.

There are several viable options to make it through to the end. However, I have seen other (more experienced) players mention that certain paths are definitely better than others.
From what I have read, there is one "best" or easiest way to win the game. But once you've figured that out there are still several other options that make the game fun to play, even when you know what's best already. I hope that helps!

I absolutely loved this game. My experience with city builders is pretty shallow. Lots of time spent with several Tropico sequels, but SP griped me in ways Tropico doesn't come close. The sense of desperation and tension kept me invested without scaring me off. Every decision feels crucial to whether or not your colony will survive. Even when things work out, you never feel too comfortable; knowing the next temperature drop or storm is looming within weeks or days. It's a game where expanding and progressing down the tech tree is vital; every second spent not researching your next advancement, brings your civilization closer to doom. When you do progress to a point were your colony thriving it feels well deserved and the internal payoff for me kept seeking survival in SP's varied senarios. This game is easy to pick up, but surviving to the end is challenging. I failed over and over again, but it never felt impossible or unfair. This game is not for the faint of heart, but if your wiling to face the bleak unforgiving cold, surviving by the skin of your teeth, you will find a game play experience worth sinking hours into.

@@twiglets2 Well I had a few days off from work, so I caved and got the game anyway!! This one is going to stick with me, you were 100% right about that.
Not sure if you consider the following spoilery, so feel free to skip ahead. The reason I loved This War of Mine so much was because the game made me feel so invested in the characters and the world around them. I remember this one time I took one of my characters out for a loot run, traded with a father and a son. The father was sick so I gave them medicine and took an axe in return. Then I killed both of them with the same axe, took my medicine and all of their supplies.
I thought about that for days on end in real life, couldn't get it out of my mind. This was around 7 years ago now and I still remember it.
One of my scouting parties in Frostpunk came across a group of 40 children all alone, I wanted to bring them back, I would have if they were adults, but children I couldn't send to work and with a housing crisis back home I couldn't afford to take them back. Ordered the scouts to abandon them and move on to the next destination. The journal entry noted how the oldest children ran after the scouts begging them to not leave.
It was the same feeling I had all those years ago playing This War of Mine. Couldn't stop thinking about it.
Back to the non spoilery bits!
I have to give you credit for the review, after playing the game I can truly appreciate how well thought out your review was. Often with games there are certain mechanics that you need to look up information for to have more clarity. Your review had the perfect balance of arming the player with sufficient information, without giving away strategies or spoiling any interesting features of the game. I only had to go to google once, something about the gathering posts. But otherwise, I knew everything I needed to by watching your review.
The game took over my life completely for the past few days, even during my idle time I kept thinking about how to make my city more efficient, how to heat certain sections better, how to get enough coal etc. etc. And though it seems overbearing, I never felt exhausted, I constantly wanted to go back in and pass the next hurdle.
I finished the main story, and to be honest it ended somewhat abruptly and I was left wanting more! I was fully expecting to have to deal with the aftermath of the storm, but hey, that's more motivation to try out some of the other modes.
I ended with 285 citizens, is that good? Not sure XD
So I'll be going back and playing more Frostpunk, thanks to you!! Hope you have a fun time with This War of Mine whenever time permits you to try it out, looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it!

An excellent analysis of an excellent game. Frostpunk is a multifaceted experience with a LOT of replay value. Simply your choices of Laws, or even the order in which you research tech, or explore the Frostland, can extend the experience, as can three (meaningful) levels of difficulty. Beyond that, self-inflicted challenges, such as some UA-camrs enact, will further test your mettle in this unforgiving scenario. Worth it? Do you enjoy the endorphin rush of intense stress relieved by momentary success? Frostpunk pays off at that level many times during playthrough. The DLCs are worth picking up, as well. =^[.]^=

Think it would appeal to a Stellaris player?

    • @twiglets2
      @twiglets2  2 роки тому

Ahhh now that is a very good question indeed. Not easy to answer though.
I think yes, but it doesn't have the replayability of Stellaris. I do believe it has some of the same systems that a Stellaris player would enjoy. It's nothing like as complicated, the systems are quite basic, but the choices are very very difficult and require much thought, depending on how willing you are to be emotionally invested.
A very different game, but a lot for a Stellaris player to like, if you're willing to get caught up in the story. You may only play it through a few times, but if you pick it up in the sale it may still represent good value.
Let us know how you get on!

Truly amazing game. I just found it myself. My friend got it for free in epic games and showed it for me. I was so intrigued by it I had to buy it from steam. I got all year of the game version of the game with all dlc-s for only 15€ lucky that it was on -75% sale. I am so addicted that I am way behind on my working schedule. Yup! I don't want to ruin any surprises but it's possible to get rid of one of them later in the game depending on which path you choose, but sometimes you play with both the whole time.
It's a real juggling act but after a while you get comfortable with what will help keep them high or low depending on what you need at the time. The book of laws is so helpful for that.

Frostpunk is not what I would call a good game. Most of its reputation comes from its aesthetics, but past that its actual gameplay is a mess. Frostpunk tries to be a hardcore game, in a genre that doesn't support difficulty that well. Specifically, the City Builder part. Difficulty in City Builders, is very difficult to pull off.
In the case of Frostpunk, its difficulty is presented by a series of scheduled events that the player needs to meticulously predict and prepare for. The result of this, is that there is virtually no player freedom, in this City Builder game. At least not if you don't want things to go catastrophically wrong along the way. The devs essentially min/maxed progression to the point where you have to follow their exact blueprint with barely any deviation in order to get through the game. And God forbid you have to restart, because there is nothing with less replayability than a City Builder with a fixed map and fixed events.
Its second problem is its actual theme. On first glance, the game appears to be all about a sort of "Man against nature" scenario. A scenario that IS quite great. The problem is that once you go in, you quickly find out that it in fact isn't, and that the game is all about some badly implemented political discourse. Instead of a united city fighting back the frozen apocalypse, like the first game makes you think, the player is stuck managing a bunch of man-babies. And I cant stress how badly that is done.
People crying because they have to work 10 hours a day, AT THE END OF THE WORLD
*SPOILER ALERT* People trying to go back to London on foot, all the way from the arctic, even though its established that they barely made it to the first location with a giant steam vehicle. *END OF SPOILER*
The Last Autumn DLC where even if you literally run the most luxurious colony with maximum happiness, people will immediately start going on about being badly treated the moment a scripted explosion happens.
Its a cool theme that is undermined in favor of a half-assed political simulator. Its like somebody on the dev team got into politics at one point and decided that their whole game should be about beating people on the head with the message of how impossible it is to please everyone.

@@mtheman4221 interesting to hear your thoughts on this. A common criticism I hear is that there is only really one path to victory which fits with what you say. However the rest of what you say has given me something to think about indeed, especially when considering what frostpunk 2 might look like.
I'm excited for it, but skeptical that they will add layers which will upset the balance. But if what you say is true, perhaps that's exactly what they need to do ...
