According to the BBC: "A TV recording of a benefit concert given at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, compered by Andy de la Tour and inspired by a visit to the African country he made in 1982 with the comic actress Maggie Steed. A number of his contemporary comics contributed, as well as actors and singers."

Back in 1984 i had been knocked down by a car while i was on my way to the school disco with my friends. Luckily i wasn't critically injured. While i was in hospital my friends had written a letter to Rik explaining that i was a huge fan of his and that i was in hospital. One day while i was hospital,bored to death, my father came to visit me and he gave me an envelope and said i should look inside. I was totally confused as i never got letters as i was still at school. I pulled out a letter and a photograph. They were from Rik Mayall who wrote me a lovely and funny letter and also a signed photograph.
I couldn't believe it when he passed away.
Rik was the funniest man ever to appear on television.

Clearly one of our greatest ever humourous character actors. From the disgusting Marxist Rick of The Young Ones to the pompous Tory Alan B'Stard of The New Statesman, the man seaps talent wrapped in a sometimes camp and over the top performance which does nothing but add even more comedy to his roles. A real asset to British comedy.
