Fender Strat Jazz Tone - All The Things You Are

- Can you use a fender stratocaster for a jazz sound?
This short video demonstrates a dark jazz tone from the Fender Stratocaster.
Although Stratocasters are typically used for pop and rock I think they make great jazz guitars too.
The standard I am using to demonstrate my strat jazz tone is an improvised arrangement of the classic All The Things You Are.
The guitar used a CIJ '62 RI Strat with upgraded GFS vintage alnico stagger pickups. I plugged into my boss FRV-1 then into the Focusrite solo.
Strings are 11-49.
I hope that you enjoy the performance!

Duke Ellington said, "There are two kinds of music - good music and bad music." You have just given an exemplary sample of good music!!
Thank you!
I'm a Jazz Guitarist. Very Beautiful 😍
Great arrangement.
Thank you!
Sounds beautiful! Nice work Jamie.
Thank you!
It's funny - I keep promising myself an archtop... and then I plug my Aria strat into a Fender Twin emulation... and the need passes.... I guess it's true - the best guitar for Jazz is the guitar in your hands that you're actually playing jazz on! Great tone!
Thank you!
Been thinking exactly the same.
Beautiful playing. You show that getting a jazz sound out of a strat is largely about the right hand technique.
Thanks. Yes I agree!
Strange musical thing... The "Fender Stratocaster"... indeed the "Strat"... never ceases to amaze in all categories. Of course, it is usually snapped in pre-deterministically into the hard rock category, yet it continuously and historically impresses audiences in all categories, including jazz. The damned instrument is so versatile and beautiful in all categories that it can reign supreme in all categories - even those that seem to be opposites to one-another.
Strats are versatile, but you'll need a string change and setup tweak to go from rock and funk to this.
I’ve tried many guitars over the years but a Strat on the neck pickup has to be my favourite.
Makes sense considering many early jazz boxes had single coils.
Great stuff - it shows you just how versatile a Strat is; I don't think even with a plain maple fretboard it would sound greatly different. Nice little Jazz guitar demo - liked and subscribed. Thanks for uploading.
Thank you for your kind words!
@@jamieholroydguitar You're very welcome - very expressive guitar playing and great Jazz technique!
Expertly played jazz standard, thanks Jamie!
Thank you Mario!
That was awesome, the stratocaster is great for jazz, thanks!
Thanks for the comment!
Incredible tone, really great.
Thank you!
Personally, I LOVE the 4th position for this type of music. Mixing the neck and middle gives such a nice twist.
The strat is just versatile. I do the same
I've had a strat for 10 years and just discovered this a few days ago. 4th position with neck pickup tone all the way down and middle pickup tone all the up. Sounds amazing. Really good for when you want a sound that's still really jazzy but different from the traditional "neck pickup, tone down" jazz sound
I love that 4th position too! Especially when the tone knob is dialled down and it sounds really sunken.
Middle with tone all the way down and neck all the way up is just magic
Nice sound, thanks. It encourages me to play more my Strat on jazz tunes. I have already noticed that, sometimes, a Strat is really good to bring some snappiness to my comping in small gigs(duos, etc)
Yeah the strat is very articulate!
And aside from my lengthy assessment on your instrument... Quite beautiful performance you provided of a timeless song! Cheers and keep growing as a musician! Truly beautiful music you provided.
Thank you for the kind words!
So beautiful. I play Shoegaze but also Jazz, the kind you just played so sweetly.
Thank you!
Love your playing... lots of feeling. Strat sounded great.
Thanks !
Your video has been shared on the Jazz Guitar Online Forum!!
Thank you!
very nice playing and demonstration of Stratocaster for Jazz playing. With the right amp the strat is a great Jazz instrument.
Thanks I agree!
@@jamieholroydguitar Which amps would you say compliment a Strat for jazz?
@@trevorowers44 yea im curious about that too :)
@@trevorowers44 Henriksen Jazz Amps are superb..
Absolutely Beautiful
Very kind of you to say, thanks!
You are an awesome musician!! Lowering the volume to 7 or 8 gives a mellower sound too.
Very kind, thank you!
I’ve always thought the same. Tone back and neck pick up.
Exactly!
Me too. I play the straight neck p.u. I think it sounds richer and tighter than the in-between selection.
Works perfectly fine with a strat or a tele! Or even to my ears, with a bit more treble or presence to bring out the single coil sound. Though obviously not traditionally associated with chord melody jazz sounds.
I agree!
Superb mellow and rich sound !
Thank you!
Sounds really sweet. Your playing is so good..
Very kind of you, thanks!
This is a a great song and a beautiful arrangement 👍
Thank you Steph. Very kind of you!
Beautiful
Thank you!
Beautifully done
Thank you!
Dig, I did enjoy the performance.
Thanks Mark!
A hum-bucker in the neck position would be even better.
Beautiful work
Very kind of you. Thanks
Brilliant
Thank you!
Damn that sounds amazing
Thank you!
@@jamieholroydguitar Hey i would like to ask you, i just started playing jazz a few weeks ago and i found the sound in the neck pickup (With the tone control cranked) to be rather bright and snappy, too much maybe. I really like the way a humbucker in the neck position sounds like. The thing is i feel like i don't cut through with that sound (Single Coil with no tone) since it's too warm for me...
The question is: Would you recommend either one of the next options?
1: Dialing a good, warm but also defined sound with my guitar (In that case please tell me what tone settings and pickups and amp settings you are using...) in the neck single coil only
2: Modding the guitar with humbucker pickups
3: Dialing in a sound with the middle and neck pickups together to kinda emulate a humbucker (They are reverse wound to eliminate sound so they are pretty much a humbucker together, however i don't have the middle pickup at a proper height since the polepieces mess with my fingers and nails, since i play with nails... Could you also recommend something for that?)
Greetings, i await for your answer. Take care and thank you
hell yea great sound
Thank you!
Great sound and performance! 👌
Thank you!
so good
Thank you!
Beautiful. I would like to ask you Mr. Holroyd: I want to play a Strat equipped with a bridge ceramic humbucker for jazz (Metal - forward pickup) and i want to know if i could achieve a desirable effect by lowering heavily the tone and volume on the guitar and the amplifier as well... best regards
Thats the best strat jazz tone I have heard. Thanks for doing this. Are the strings tuned to full pitch or Eb?
Very kind of you - thanks! I'm in standard tuning
Keep them coming!
Cheers, will do!
Great video!! I've been following you regarding the use of the stratocaster in jazz (I'm referring to your latest videos).
I hope you make a video using .012 gauge. No flatwounds. Like old jazzman - Charlie Christian - wore.
Thanks for your support!
Sounds better than some telecasters Ive heard...
Thanks!
My older brother taught me guitar at an early age, then he became a guitar tech
Whenever I talked to him about chamging gear for switching styles he always said "it's all in the ear and the hands"
It's true
Class as always.
Why not Strat ? One thing I hate about the jazz set is how they fixate on big hollow bodies.
There is a college trio on the tube where the young guitarist uses a Strat on a note perfect Johnny Smith cover of his Walk don't Run. Check out the clip with Joe Pass playing a Jazzmaster.
Well said! Glad you liked the video
You are the best! Nice!
Thanks!
Such a nice piece :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome
Thank you!
Love this
Thanks Lee!
Dear Jamie. Awesome interpretation. What pickups do you use in this stratocaster? I'm looking anyway for a jazz tone on my stratocaster and I found your guitar surprisingly good.
Thanks they are cheap GFS ones listed in the description which sound pretty good but not as full as the Seymour Duncan’s in my tele.
I have a strat, SG, and Les Paul, and have been hankering after a hollow body archtop to get that "authentic" jazz tone...
But this has got me re-thinking!
What the secret??? 🤔
The player 😉
Great sound! Gábor Szabó occasionally played a Stratocaster during his career. I think one can hear it, for example, on the alternative take of Indian Summer on Paul Desmond's album Skylark. Very different but still amazing! I put flatwounds on my Stratocaster and my flat-top acoustic and they both sound and feel way better than the ES-335 I used to play. Is there anything Stratocasters can't do? I don't think so!
Thanks for your comment I'll check out the album!
I love the playing, I am a strat guy and always prefered teles on jazz. Still do, and trying to figure out why because there is very little dif in a strat and tele. I guess it is either the fixed bridge or that damn lipstick pickup. But a tele definately sounds miles closer to jazz teritory to me.
But you play well regardless.
Thank you! I definitely prefer the sound of Teles for jazz. I agree about the fixed bridge!
Hello maybe you would also have EQ settings on amp advices to make Strat sound more like p90 ? Tx :-)
Thanks! No amp in this video just straight into a focusrite via a reverb pedal so all the EQ happens on the guitar volume and tone knobs
Should we come to the conclusion that only amps matters?
Maybe although I didn’t use an amp on this video
Great playing and tone.
What pickup switch position are in you? Also what were the guitars volume and tone control settings?
Thank you please see this video ua-cam.com/video/_dDIdj5BnbE/v-deo.html
Hi Jamie, great playing and tone!! 😁 What're the strings you're using? Flat wounds?
Thanks! Round 11s
Hi, Are you using Flatwound strings? You have a great tone and lovely playing.
Thank you!! 11 rounds
Hello, are you using flatwounds? thanks

Nice sound. What do you think about the yamaha pacifica 120h? Is coming with 2 no covered humbuckers without tremolo bar for a more stable tuning. Do you think can I achieve some jazzy sound with stock pickups? One opinion on this kind of strat guitar if is possible thanks
Amazing starter guitars but I prefer vintage style Strats
Genial!! He comprado Strato ...qué cuerdas pusiste?. Y qué amplificador?. Un saludo! ❤
¡Gracias! Utilizo cuerdas calibre 11 entorchadas redondas.
nice tone! can i know your eq setting of stratocaster?
Thank you please check out this video ua-cam.com/video/_dDIdj5BnbE/v-deo.html&feature=share7
This is awesome!!! What guitar and amp settings did you use?
Thanks! 2006 CIJ 62 RI just plugged into an interface with a reverb pedal.
is that Fender a Japanese Made? E Series?
It’s a Fender Japan but not that old - it’s from 2006
Do you think strat is better suited for jazz than a tele?
Do they make teles with a strat neck pickup but a tele bridge?
I generally prefer Teles personally. I know that you can get Teles with Strat middle pickups but don't know about the neck!
a swapping out a tele neck pup for a strat is a pretty common mod! idk about fender but godin does a model like this
How did you get the tone. Btw I subbed
Thanks. Pick lightly and back of the guitars tone and volume accordingly

Sublime. Did you roll the tone down on this?
Thanks. Yes I did.
Fabulous! Which amp simulator are you using?
Thank you! Nothing back then. Just plugged a reverb pedal into my focusrite.
@@jamieholroydguitar Sorry I don't get it. So you simply recorded the raw signals into your DAW? Will it even be loud enough?
@@sirporkrib7643 The audio interface has a gain so you can set that for it to be loud enough.
What model of amp are you using on this video?
I think I just plugged my guitar into a reverb then my focusrite audio interface. So, no amp!
Wow. How is it possible? What is your gear and settings please?
Thanks, alll the gear is listed in the description. Cheers.
OK is that flatround string ?
what pick do you use ? And play you with the rounded size or pointed ? I ask because I dont understand why your sound is so awesome!!!
@@loumat62 Roundwound 11's
@@loumat62 Thanks! Purple dunlop 2.0mm and the pointed side.
Gear nerd question of the day: what type of pick do you use Jamie?
GFS vintage alnico stagger pickups
The guitar came with Texas Special pickups but I did not really like them. A friend the GFS pickups and I think they sound better, but I have not tried other pickups in a Strat to compare.
@@jamieholroydguitar I actually meant pick as in plectrum hehehe! But good to know your opinion on the GFS vintage staggers (I have one of their pickups on a Telecaster).
Sorry! I use the 2mm purple dunlop
what pickups are in this strat??
I listed them in the description! Thanks
@@jamieholroydguitar are they the alcino 2's or 5's. Having a hard time finding these for purchase on google lol, where did you get your pickups from?
How did you get that tone out of strat guitar?

Hi.WHAT PRESET USES TO GET THIS SOUND
Hey info is in the description
What kind of strap are you using?
Levy guitar strap I've had since I was a teenager!
string model please ?
11's round wound
At what setting do you have the neck tone?
Around 7 usually!
@@jamieholroydguitar That's where I always keep mine, but you sound warmer. All in the fingers, I guess.
I might have backed off the volume too, but yes mostly in the fingers
@@jamieholroydguitar Forgot to mention, I usually back the volume off to 9, too.

Whats matter is not guitar but guitarist
Sounds like Ted Greene.
Wow, that's quite a compliment. Thank you!
nice playing. something just sounds wrong about jazz on a strat though
Strat is not for Jazz Simple, get es335 or something hollow body or even a Tele
Lol Jazz can be played on anything I have an es 335 and many hollowbody guitars and at times I used my strat more than those guitars for Jazz
Eldon Shamblin laughs at your comment.
Dear Jamie. Awesome interpretation. What pickups do you use in this stratocaster? I'm looking anyway for a jazz tone on my stratocaster and I found your guitar surprisingly good.
Thank you pickups listed in the description. They’re ok - not sure if they’re as good as Duncans
