    I wonder if there were defensive structures there before the monks moved in, and how much archaeological research has been done there on that and the other pillar tops ? I have seen forts and castles on similar "unassailable" sites around the world, from Malaga to Utah, and am fascinated by such history. The views over the edge of the stairs had my acrophobia on edge ! Thanks for sharing !

    I'm surprised that ancient Greeks didn't use those as fortress or citadels. The Acropolis was used as one.
