This is my favourite Indian movie. Man, I cried a lot at the end. Probably third most I cried after Schindler's list and 12 years a Slave.(I know I keep list of movies where I cried. I'm wierd af). I presented this movie as the main topic in my interview for London film school Summer School with Director Udayan Prasad. There is a phenomenon of Indian Inferiority Complex that this film addresses. It is a sociopathological phenomenon where Indians consider themselves as inferior to British or foreigners in general because of white washing of Indian Culture by British Colonialists. I know this may sound made up but any Indian born in '90s can tell you. You can also see "Namaste London". I believe Namaste London addresses this topic more appropriately than Swades. Swades is more about discovering your connection with your homeland. Older Bollywood movies were pure gems. They were based on Indian Context. They understood that Indians culture is different as is every other culture. Unfortunately, what nowadays you can see is fake/forced patriotism just for showcase and reverse racism that is rampant in modern society. Man, I can't with this world.
I REALLY enjoyed this movie when I saw it, for many of the same reasons you did, just you have a hell of a lot better way of explaining it than I ever could! The outdoor movie scene was awesome, and is the scene that keeps replaying in my head over and over again every time I think about this movie. Great movie with a huge message on many scales. If it wasn't for your channel Joe, I never would have stumbled across this movie, not to mention other greats like "Court", "The Disicple", and "Ship of Theseus".
Just French new wave, Italian neo realism or dogme 95 movements, India has "parallel cinema movements". So Satyajit Ray, Mrinal sen, ritvik ghatak, bimal Roy, shyam benegal, govind nilhani etc made films in this movements in 1960s. It mostly inspired from Italian neo realism and Indian theatres just like Britain's kitchen sink movies in 60s.
This movie is a treasure considering both shahrukh and the director's filmographies are all massive and bombastic. Imagine Tom Cruise making only mission impossible movies all his life and then doing something like The Spectacular Now.
@@JoeLaRocca one of the most charming guys when he is doing interviews. You can say he is cocky and arrogant, but you always wish you had his confidence

I'll recommend "Love Exposure" again. It's almost 4 hours but the pacing is phenomenal. I've seen one hour movies that feel longer. Have you watched Black & White films? And would you review such films? For your next Shahrukh Khan movie I would recommend Devdas. I think he gives his best performance in that movie.
Black and white all day long. Have and will review. Love Exposure is on the list. I just need to start it. Devdas and my name is khan are getting recommended a lot.
i m glad u love it nice nice review . well u can compare it somewht with TOM CRUISE & SHARHUKH KHAN. SHARHUKH KHAN has already done lots of action movies & romantic movies like TOM CRUISE for ex- rembered Tom Cruise have done the scene by holding the gate of the plane for take off in mid air on Mission impossible & thr is a scene where Sharkuh khan jumped from the Prisoner Plane with an enemy without parachute & escaped easily from the movie called "DON" part 1. so there is nothing difference between both of them.✌️😁
One of the best ways to learn how to pronounce Indian names and words is to search on UA-cam for an interview of the director or actor or review of the movie by any Indian, they will preface it with basic bio etc.
11:45 you said exactly the most correct thing. He is a way way better actor than Tom Cruise but ofc nobody is as insane as Tom. Also SRK is more richer than Tom Cruise, cheeky trivia for you.
I won't suggest to watch Devdas.... first you should watch Sanjay Leela Bhansali newer work to understand his vision his direction style like..... Bajirao Mastani, Padmawaat, raam Leela then you should go for Devdas
Thats a lot of homework. I will see what I can do. I will certainly try to find these films and watch them. I appreciate the curation too, very helpful.
Sweet! Thanks for watching. I should watch more indian cinema, I got out of it for a while watching other things. There is so much I have yet to explore.
I never feel totally satisfied with an SRK movie, even though he tries hard. I really can't pin it down, but it never feels truly grounded. It was an interesting conversation. I have lived some part of this story...as I live in both countries.
You should also watch Taare Zameen Par. You'll love it as well.
Ok yeah I’ve seen this come up on streaming service. Looks right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation. Review coming soon 👍

Top of the list. Many people are suggesting this already. Must be good.

Hahaha I got you. Thanks I get a fuller picture of the kind of star SRK is. Seems like a cool guy in interviews.
@@JoeLaRocca one of the most charming guys when he is doing interviews. You can say he is cocky and arrogant, but you always wish you had his confidence
Padmaavat next pretty please. It’s on Amazon prime and would be a wonderful introduction to Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Yeah I feel like that is the logical next move. And like you said it is easily accessible to me in a high quality with decent subs.
Watch "my name is khan" It's Shahrukh khan movie
Ok im on it. Thanks for the suggestion. Sub up so you don't miss the review possibly later this week.
'My name is khan ' & 'Veer Zaara' should be next in your watchlist
Added to the list. Sub up so you dont miss the reviews later this week. Cheers!
Thankyou for review

Suede-s! 😂 It is Swa (like swirl without the "rl") - des (like a French person would pronounce dés).
I tired. Friend. I tired. 😂😂
Have you ever watched Monsoon Wedding?
Yes. I should watch it again.
Love Shah Rukh Khan! Can't ever go wrong with this movie... ❤️
Also, wrong pronounciation 😂😂
Were you able to finish Piku?
Which name did I butcher the worst. I am learning them from google translate. I have not finished Piku but I plan on doing so.
