Looking foward to part two. As an American, I find it interesting seeing how you were able to arrive at something we still can't figure out even the basics of.

Surprising how many towns & cities have an area called 'The Spital' from older monastic hospitals. I live in the ancient Roman City of Chester which has an area called The Spital on the main East road out that the monks charged toll to travel through out of the city on a pinch point between marsh land & the cliffs of the river Dee. As I understand the toll was used to support the hospice. Now the only remains is a large mound 10 foot high supported with old brick work with history of cemetery from civil war/ plague or older history whilst the old work houses have been demolished which my dead nan remembered.
I never realised the connection with The Poor Law act as connected to the evolution of the NHS

That's very interesting - there's a 'Spitalfields' in London too, which I believe is around the area of St Bartholomew's Hospital mentioned in the video as one of the old royal hospitals.

@@RadicalHistory I've just checked out the word 'spital', basically hospital.

You are a wonderful researcher and presenter, so it might be interesting if you directed some of your efforts to questioning narratives around the efficacy of vaccination in light of other developments like improved sanitation. It's a rabbit hole worth exploring.

Please stop saying the NHS is free. We have paid for it in advance via our taxes. It is 'free at the point of care' not funded with hot air but with our taxes. We do pay for it.

This video was very interesting, but most people don’t have to go into hospital when they’re ill, they need a GP or family doctor so vividly described in A.J. Cronin’s The Citadel for the interwar years.

This is a good point - and something we'll need to cover in the second video, as the GP system is a particular characteristic of the British system it seems!

Important to remember most health care takes place in the home, with women organising and carrying out simple care for self limiting illnesses plus care of babies, the frail and elderly, not to mention ensuring safety, sleep, basic hygiene and adequate nutrition and hydration. 😉 #justsaying
      Great video.

after the nhs you can still lie in bed and hope you get better but it won't cost you as much. who knows? someone with an dr's appt might die before you do and you'll move up in line.
