Good video guys, well done. Can't emphasize enough the importance of clean air into the combustion system, contaminants are what cause most of the cylinder/piston failures, oil leaks into the exhaust, etc. Keep those filters on tight, and keep them clean. I'm just finishing up a top end rebuild due to air filter failure in the first 70 hours of engine operation.
I honed a stihl Nikasil cylinder with a huge impact , deep socket covered in 3k grit sandpaper buttered up with diamond paste 😂. next time I hone a cylinder tho I’ll do it on the drill press so it’s more “ precise “ . send it ! Edit : muriatic acid helps get some aluminum off before I hone the cylinder
Hey RM,i did a top end rebuild have a nikasil coated cylinder..do i need to perform "Enigine Break-In" or are break-ins only for cast iron/retro cylinders?!
The break-in process is to help seat the rings to the cylinder wall regardless of cylinder type. So yes, it's a good idea to follow some sort of break-in procedure before riding to the engines full potential.
NIkasil is approx 0.003" thick. Non honing is very bad to do as nikasil is microscopic holes and even scrotchbrite pad will fill those holes and it willnot be like new again. ua-cam.com/video/vaFp8aYkHNA/v-deo.html
Why can you buy cylinders? I hear everyone say just replace it and some parts for my 2000 cr125 are hard to find I don’t even know where I’d look for a cylinder
Depending on how bad your cylinder is. If its plated or been sleeved. If the plating is just worn or damaged you can send it out to millennium tech to get it re coated

You are actually supposed to. It's a misconception because all the engine builders say don't hone it but they actually mean don't hone it like you would hone a steel or iron cylinder with a stone hone. Honing with a regular stone hone leaves dirt in the nikasil but an aluminum hone is safe for nikasil. The shops that replate hone with a diamond hone to get the cylinder into spec.
@@jacobvanhalteren7452 An Alumumin hone is soft and will fill the microscopic porous holes in the nikasil. Not a good idea. Even using a scotchbrite pad is a bad idea. Per motorcycle factory team mechanics and techs.
Amazing - I am doing a top-end for the first time Saturday - and this drops now. Thanks RM!

Thanks for showing both the cast iron and nikasel. Now, I know for sure mines is a cast iron

Hi, Can top cylinder ridge make engine burning oil ?
For anyone looking for professional cylinder work I’ve had a great experience with powerseal USA
Hey RM I got a cylinder that's damaged can I just bore it out and get an oversize piston and rings

@@rmatvmc thanks im gonna go with the hard break in method.thank you
Can someone please help me. Is there supposed to be cross hatching on cast iron lining? Or just if it’s nikasel plated? Thank you
The crosshatch should be on the cast iron lining as well. -Charels

What is Hot Tanking? Does anyone do it and if you have feedback I’d appreciate it.
Big ole dishwasher for car parts
Usually not friendly to aluminum or any other non-ferrous metals.
I've got a nikasil ktm cylinder and my magnet sticks to the inside of it
Should you hone a cylinder every time? I thought you would never want to hone any coating?

I’m really not much for preaching but please wear eye protection when you’re spraying contact cleaners. It really sucks getting them in your eyes.
They lost me when they honed Nikasil
