I love the F chords. I'd say my favorite one is the Fadd9. I like your two note version, sounds beautiful when finger picking. I've yet to have that throw an instrument moment. Love the channel Darrell.

I don't throw mine either. I just don't pick it up for two years, just as the callouses were starting to form, then I have to start all over with them in two years, determined to 'keep playing this time.' Yeah, right.

Tip for beginners playing the F chord:
pick a song you know that has the F chord and just play that song over and over. Doesnt matter if you're getting the F chord sound wrong, your fingers will get used to the placement and the muscles will strengthen eventually and you'll be able to play an F :)

Or join bands that only play songs that have no F in them.... unless its the first chord in the first song in the set, then you can arrive early and get the chord ready while the drummer is setting up.

One time I was peacefully practicing my sopranino recorder, but my roommate came in and kept telling me to stop playing because it was annoying. I argued with her saying that, no, my sopranino playing is splendid, but she kept telling me to stop playing still! So I got so angry that I threw my beautiful sopranino recorder at her face and almost knocked her eye out. Thank god my recorder is okay.

I threw my practice nylon string guitar across the couch one time and it very nearly went through the living room window. I was SO GLAD that it stopped before it hit that window! These days I default to the first position bar chord to play F, but when i was first learning my teacher showed me a way to play the 4 string version from a C chord. Simply drop the second and third fingers down one string and roll the first finger so it covers both the first and second strings.
One thing that you could have shown to aid beginning players changing from C to the FMaj7 would be to follow this same process without baring the top two strings. Hold the first finger in position on the B string and bring the other two fingers down. Easy.

Here are some F chords I use a lot-especially when playing with other guitarists who have the low voicings covered.
    x - x - 3 - 5 - x - 5
    x - x - 9 - 9 - 9 - 13
    x - 8 - 10 - 10 - 10 - x
    x - x - 0 - 5 - 6 - 5 (F6^D, leave off the D for a plain F chord)

      x - 8 - 7 - x (or open as add9) - 6 - 8
Of course one can as well leave the E-string open for a major7... but who am I talking to ;)

#4 looked too familiar and I realized that the frets being depressed are the same as done with one form of an Am7, but I have incorrectly been letting the high E ring out (my apologies to Mr. Ed Sheeran). Gotta be honest though Darrell, you threw me for a loop when I didn't hear "Hey guys, welcome back the channel." That intro was...different. I like it.Thank you as always for making the vid and including some great ways to work these forms into everyday playing!

My 14 year old fingers had quite a difficult and painful time learning any chord on a high action circa 40s Epiphone. When I came to the F chord, all that pent up pain and frustration pushed me to throw that Epi on the floor, one day, resulting in a 6 inch crack around the upper body at the fretboard heel. We slapped some duct tape on it to hold it together for two more years until I was able to buy my first classical guitar. After all these years I have two wishes--that I had treated that guitar with more respect, and that I still had it.

  • @craigbrowning9448
    @craigbrowning9448 5 років тому

The first two Guitars I owned were fairly cheap. I have a keyboard background, so based on that, I consulted a Fredrick Noad book for Standard Tuning, and located Middle C on the Low E String (8th position) and figured my way out from there.
Then I let it go for a couple of decades and started back a few years ago.
The point about the 8th Fret area is it that it's more flexible than First Position.
I didn't (and often still don't) play Barre Chords per se, but often One-String-Per-Fingertip.

Can you do a lesson on how to practice and learn to strum both up and down (especially up) when you only want to strike 3 to 5 strings, like you do at 2:06? You're hitting all 3, right? I can kinda understand how someone can strum downward and hit fewer than 6 strings if their aim is consistent, since they don't have to raise the pick in time to avoid strings which are still in their path (i.e. they want to hit the high B or E strings and there are no more strings to worry about hitting after that), but how anyone can strum up and only hit the first three strings without hitting other strings which are in the path upward, such as hitting the 4th, or to hit the first 4 without hitting 5 or 6, or to hit 5 strings without hitting 6 is beyond me. I haven't found one lesson video by anyone dealing with this. The guitar books don't discuss it either, they just say to do it without saying how. Do you actually do both downstrokes and upstrokes at the end on the F/C, avoiding the two E strings? (They're like bookends). I don't see how. There has to be some string avoidance exercises to practice to develop the skill.

Thanks for this. I've smacked into a solid brick wall with a big F painted on it. Trying to learn the bar version but definitely need these cheats. Baby steps. Just gotta keep going. A little each day. No-one ever over came a challenge by giving up.

Well, I must admit when playing my first guitar, I smashed it on the floor, so the neck broke. My elder brother re-mounted it with two bolts, but it never sounded good again. It never stayed in tune again. Which was the reason why I smashed it...
Those days I used to tune my guitar to music coming from a cassette-player. Now I know that these things didn't really keep their tune stable enough. After that I have been using a pitch pipe.
I am not the person who will destroy any instrument. I rather take good care for them. Now these days I even have a microfibre cloth in my gig-bags to wipe the guitars (and especially the strings) before I close the bag. Maybe over the top, but perhaps a direct result of my emotional explosion then. You must know that I had just learned a few chords and wanted to use them to 'real music' and because of my action I had to wait until another guitar was in my reach. I can tell you that those weeks were like spending time in prison (I guess). Horrible!!

George Harrison used an Fadd9 with a G in the bass. The chord became somewhat well known. Think A Hard Day's Night opening chord!

1:23 The one on the left is super easy. Just bridge your index finger over the B and E string. That was the second chord I learned.

Why have I not seen any chord diagrams anywhere like the very first one you show for F, using all 4 fingers? If I do a google search on 'Guitar F chord' and then 'images,' there are pages of diagrams and I don't see that one for some reason. Your pinky can reach the middle of the 3rd fret on the 4th string, right? There has to be a reason for not having seen it before which I'm not aware of. (I'm cursed with short stubby fingers). Could it be the inability to transition to other chords easily when the 4th finger is occupied? That's all I can think of. What am I missing? Btw, I love the maj7 sound. I can't barre the two strings with my first finger at 90 degrees to the strings and flat, and not have my 2nd finger make contact with the B string. I noticed you do it with at a very high angle to the two B-E strings, while other people go straight across. I struggle with buzz either way.

Im mostly a ukelele player, so F is easy, but i tried to start playing some random chords i found online, and the list didnt show an F (I was confused because, on Uke, the E chord is the evil key not F), So i looked up the F chord and looked at the picture showing the chord. Lets just say a couple of choice colorful words came from my mouth lol. Glad this video was here, Helped a lot So Thanks!! Ps: You Are A Wonderful Guitar Player!

The Fmaj7sus2 is close to my favorite chord but I add the F bass note (thumb) and open A string which makes it a Fmaj9. Beautiful chord and goes great with Am.

Thanks for the response, Darrell. As a symphony violinist I can tell you that string players traditionally have lousy rhythm. That's why I play drums. ☺ They're so concerned with every other aspect of technique that rhythm takes a back seat. This is why on stage the strings are always behind the beat of the baton.

Great lesson again, Darrel. May I suggest, you teach an advanced lesson now and then. A lot of us could need a lesson, how to set our sound, which pedals, how to set the amp and so on - as well 🤘

Those Tacoma guitars are actually pretty nice guitars. I have a Tacoma D12 solid wood body made in the USA. The finish all came off of it so I had to refinish it but it still is a decent guitar. It for sure isn't on the same level as my Taylor but it's a good guitar none the less. It's what I bring places if I don't want to risk messing up my Taylor.
