“Truth is not born nor is it to be found inside the head of an individual person, it is born between people collectively searching for truth, in the process of their dialogic interaction.” (Bakhtin: 1984: 110)
Super helpful summary! I'm working on my master's thesis in history and Bakhtin's name has been popping up a lot in my research. I'm pressed for time and haven't gotten around to reading any of Bakhtin's texts, so I really appreciate this summary, which helps me understand why he's so relevant in historiography! Thanks!!
The concept of polyphony is explained very nicely here. Can you suggest a Novelist whose works can be analyzed with the tools of polyphony, dialogics, carnivaesque .
The essence of musical polyphony is the simultaneous coexistence of many independent voices, but doing this literally in dialog would only bring about a confusion of voices. I think it is their independence that counts, although taking this view diminishes the analogy with musical polyphony.
... a long way to say nothing much... indeterminate... ultimately non-objective... post-mod mob yaya... might as well be speaking about Queen Mab and the Fairies....
