I went through in the 70s... Vietnam was about to wind down, but they still cranked out the pilots. We were expected to know everything cold and conduct the flight with only occasional instructions or correction by the instructor. Some instructors would still smack the back of the student's helmet if he* messed up. Lots of pressure - by design!

I went through Pensacola as a Marine NFO. This takes me back to my first flight in the T-6A. Radio skills will come with time. A technique that I still use in the F-18 is to keep a running column at the bottom of my kneeboard card of assigned headings, altitudes, and altimeter settings because I tend to forget them shortly after I read them back (sometimes before lol). Good luck and fly safe.

I hear you. Fly out of So California area. I loved seeing jets come out of El Torro. So sad to see it go. But I hated the read backs it’s ALWASY so easy the same stuff heading alt etc. same format but I always botched it 😂 it did get better like you said over time. Especially flying out of Kansas with little ATC to So California just to get off the ground it takes multiple frequencies and a clearance but I loved it. My eye was 20/25 in 1989 few years later Navy went correctable vision. Was so mad.

I love it. You can see the student start off sharp and on top of things then he gets overwhelmed and behind, exacerbated by nausea, he can't think of even basic recovery procedures, and then he's just along for the ride. Totally normal, just lucky he didn't get chunks in the 'stache. UCT, is that like WSO training?

How so often see military aircraft aircraft in the air that when we casually look up and watch them, we have no idea the type of men and women who are inside, much less the amount of teaching, learning, and work that’s going on inside the cockpits.

Military service should be mandatory in America. My dad was in the Army during Korea, and I was accepted to go the Academy, but chose business instead. Worst decision of my life. I went to a private school in TX, and had sold my business by age 47 (that I built after 21 years of working 6 days a week every single week, literally). Then one day I got ALS, and totally regret not flying and/or having those amazing VA benefits. The moral: GO TO THE MILITARY, KIDS! You have time to decide, so 3 years delay really won't kill you. Screw these expensive 4 year college educations and loans. HARD WORK is the key to success. If you are engaged and competent, and have basic comm. skills, you really don't need to run up $150K in debt! That's what THEY want you to do, not what YOU need the most! Work hard, but begin your adult life with the US MILITARY! It's so invaluable!

I'm fresh out of high school and currently in my freshman year of college, I plan on joining the airforce after I finish schooling at the community college I'm at. I'm a little nervous about it because I'll be something new, but I got the chance to fly a cessna a few weeks ago and I'm completely hooked. Thank you for writing this, it's very inspiring!

They don’t have to taxi very far. Air Force puts their aircraft right next to the end of the runway at Pensacola.

I was enlisted for 5 years while finishing school and applied for OTS. My recommendation would be to do ROTC. If you can get into the academy that is a great option also. There are pros and cons to each

Jake.bergman93 hey question. I’m recently in school to become a nurse. I almost have my degree bachelors as I had college before joining. But I have been really flirting with the idea of becoming a pilot. I feel like it’s my calling, I always come back to it. Being enlisted and am two years away from My ETS date. How did you manage to get flight hours ? How did you study for the afoqt. Did you study aviation heavy or a little of everything. And final question would you recommend getting out. Then Applying for ocs as a civilian prior enlisted? Or re enlisting and taking my chances there. I know how competitive it is to get into ocs from active duty. Thanks I’m advance. Very inspirational.

Don.S550 You can get flight ours by first renting or buying an aircraft then getting an instructor. Once you have that you will co pilot with them till you are Able to solo the aircraft then you will have your license.

Kelvin Lol dont make near enough money to rent or buy aircraft as an enlisted e4 dude. Let alone have enough time to fly on weekends.
