Sylvester McCoy is the most underrated Doctor and still one of my favs. with more money and BBC not watering down the show. We would be talking about Sylvester McCoy as one of the great Doctors. With Ace in the next season he shows why

I watched the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker series from behind the couch in the United States with my parents on PBS back in the day. The Genesis of the Daleks is intense stuff for a 5 year old. PBS always showed the really great episodes whenever they were having donation drives (they are publicly funded). I'd like to go back see some of the 5th - 7th doctor episodes since I've never seen any of them. One thing I think is really awesome is that Ace wears a patch on her jacket that was the flight patch for the space shuttle challenger on the mission when it was destroyed during launch. The disaster happened in 1986 so it would have been a year before the episodes were shown. I think it was a very classy thing for the producers of the show and the BBC to do.

Given the very public damage from the previous couple seasons, and the scheduling positioning it as a sacrificial target against Corrie, it's tough to think what genuinely could've happened to really boost this one back to previous levels. Nothing short of a big international star, major cash injection, re-positioning as one of the top BBC cornerstones and new creative minds coming in could've turned things around enough.
Almost none of that was ever going to happen in 1987. The BBC no longer cared much, they certainly weren't interested in financial or development improvements, the show had suffered and JNT had had the stuffing knocked out of him. Season 24 was a work of last minute desperation, in which the victory was as much in getting the season completed and broadcast.
Thankfully we did get the creative minds. Even with the general public interest dwindling away, in terms of quality and against the odds, the show still had an Indian summer ahead of it.

Great article. The thing i keep in mind is that the show was delivering the remit given to them by the BBC management to make the show more humorous and tone down the violence. it did that. the scenes with the Rani impersonating Mel are funny and fun to watch if you watch it with a mindset that this is, as you have said, taking itself less seriously and having a bit more fun and humour. later series during Tom Baker’s run focused greatly on humour and although some later said it had gotten too silly, I loved the fun and lightness of touch.

This was the problem with Doctor Who by this stage. The actors they had as companions were better known for children's television, and for some of us of a certain age, it kind of devalued what was once seen as a contemporary sci-fi/fantasy series that you could easily suspend your willing of disbelief for. Then, when they cast the Doctor with another actor who was again, a former children's entertainer, it was kind of the final straw. Despite not having taken a vested interest in the show for a year or so, by this time, I did still dip my toe in the waters of what was Doctor Who, but always came away feeling somewhat disappointed.
I can't blame the actors, of course, or even the producers. They could only really work with what they had. The BBC had basically had it in for the show for a number of years and were very restrictive with the budget allocated, and as such, they had to move into areas away from what was considered a more purist form of sci-fi/fantasy. The result was something more akin to a children's show styled after Doctor Who. 'Rentaghost in space.'

I grew up with Dr Who from Tom Baker. Baker was and still is one of my childhood heroes. I stayed with it through Davidson's time and Colin Baker's but it was the second episode of Dragonfire (and that literal cliff hanger ending) which I finally bowed out after seeing the quality of the show decline year by year, Doctor by Doctor and I do feel that JNT was a significant contributing factor to that decline. When I heard that it had been axed, I was relieved that the show had finally been put out of its misery.

The mccoy era's timing was problematic in our house, as it coincided with the exact same time coronation street (or emerdale - i forget) was on the tv on the other side.. Thus my mum would win out. And I'd have to go watch on my dads tiny 8" black and white tv in the shed (Which in winter months - as much as my love for the doc, was never gonna happen)
EDIT : Oh, I should stop posting before I've watched everything :D

Amazing video yet again. Season 24 is an odd one. I have so much fun with Time And The Rani, Paradise Towers I really don’t get on with, for me it’s too cringeworthy and not entertaining. Delta And The Bannermen I don’t really know what to make of. But Dragonfire ends the season well. It’s such a shame seeing how the show had lost favour in the public as McCoy’s era is fantastic.
    Also, R.I.P Tony Selby (Glitz)

  • @Gerrypotterpoet
    @Gerrypotterpoet 3 роки тому +2

Once again, bravo Adam. The last and this season are my least favourite in the shows history, this season being the very worst. There’s lots of things effects wise getting better but the historic soul of the programme isn’t there. This is the second regeneration story not working, that is a narratively damaging trajectory for the show. In his first episode Sylvester isn’t in any way The Doctor, he misses almost every characterful beat. He’ll quickly get better but this isn’t great audience ‘optics’ for the series. The two Mel’s is a terrible thing to have done. Of course Kate O’Mara isn’t taking the piss but the way Bonnie’s Mel is dramatically (or more importantly not), placed within the adventure and how she’s made to over perform, it makes it look like a too campy piss take (it’s far more shrill Monty Python than anything approaching sci-fi). Such a creatively short sighted thing to have done. Paradise Towers is such a missed opportunity Richard Briers and Delta’s Ken Dodd are wrong. A sense of the old show creeps into Dragonfire, but by then it’s all too late. I actually can’t watch this season and it’s the only run of shows making me consistently squirm. Thankfully the first story of the next season will change everything, but this twaddle has tragically been witnessed. I would say five million viewers against CS isn’t too bad, not to shabby at all. The show is intellectually shabby though and has been for two seasons now. Magnificently constructed content though Adam, love this series of historically informative vids. Gx

poor colin baker, in a recent interview,
said at the time in 1987...
    he did take it personally,
that either he thought that he let the fans down, and that JNT did not want to be the exec producer anymore,so made an excuse in *hindsight*
we know there was many factors behind the show.eventually having a hitatus and the soap operas, dramas becoming *priotisted during that period*
the director general, wanted the programme gone or finished, so did not want too fund it...
but also had a * enormous backlash from the fans to return it*..
terrible writing like timeslip, and mediocre ones like twin dilemma, and great ones like vengance on varos..
the trial was a massive risk* , no great suprise fans turned off for the complicated storylines and drama going on behind the camera
, the missing season would have been better, that lost until recently on *big finish audio*...
so colin either resigned, was pushed ,sacked....by JNT ,,,,then came sylvester mcoy....
as crisis behind the camera, was ongoing...
eric saward, resigned.... and cartmell tried his best, to * invigorate a show in crisis,
mediocre stories like time and the rani and great ones like silver nemesis, rem of the daleks...
yes, the moving around of the time and schedules, did nothing too help the *show close to cancellation and underfunded, also it really showed....
that JNT probably wanted to move on, but had no replacement...

Maybe it's my being born and raised in USA, but I never once batted an eye at the violence in Doctor Who. It never close to being too intense.
