The fact is, this was a brilliant pop song for the time. That is why it has endured even to this day.
That is true. The song is excellent. But the video is pure comedy. Village People tricked the U.S. Navy into using a navy ship to do the video. They didn`t know that they were a gay group playing homosexual stereotypes. Gay people were NOT allowed to serve back then, and here they allowed five homosexuals to dance on their ship waving flags and shit with the full corporation of the U.S. homophobic navy. It`s so funny when you think about it. The best practical joke ever. I would have loved to see the Navy peoples reaction when they found out they had been duped.
Part of me simply can't believe the Navy allowed this to take place. 😂

I was serving in the USAF and was sent to the language institute at Monterey.
They didn't have room for me in the AF barracks so they put me up in the Navy barracks.
When the sailors saw me, they started singing Wild Blue Yonder.
Not really knowing what the Navy song was, I started singing the refrain, "In the Navy."
Needless to say, they were not happy hearing that.

Fun fact: the US Navy asked the Village People’s producer if they could use this song for a recruitment campaign. He accepted, but instead of fees he wanted the Navy’s help shooting the music video. The Navy provided them with the frigate USS Reasoner, aircrafts and lots of se(a)men. However, the song was not used for the campaign in the end when the Navy eventually learned about the group’s gay innuendos.

I didn't even was born when that video was recorded, but I find the disco music more rhythmically than rap and reggaeton. Although people tag the disco music with homosexuality it was more respectful than the current music. I don't care if they were gay not, they had the right to be what they wanted to be. What I care about is that it was a very happy era. My parents lived thus era and loved it.

The US Navy made a huge mistake when they didn't keep this song as an official song in their recruitment efforts. Regardless of one's sexcual orientation this song is catchy and fun enough to make people look at the navy look a little for favorably.
My uncle used to be in the Navy, almost every day this song would play over the ship's intercom system and not ONCE did they ever get a complaint from the crew. even as this became a gay pride symbol this song was just so damn catchy. apparently some ships in the navy still use this as their unofficial anthem.

Reasoner, originally (DE-1063), was laid down 6 January 1969 by Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, Seattle, Washington and launched 1 August 1970; cosponsored by Mrs. James C. Curry and Mrs. Robert Svinger. Reasoner was commissioned 31 July 1971, Cmdr. Francisco Velazquez-Suarez, USN, commanding. Reasoner was decommissioned on 28 August 1993, and subsequently leased to Turkey, where the ship was recommissioned as Kocatepe. On 22 February 2002, she was finally purchased by Turkey.
The ship was featured in the music video for The Village People single In the Navy.
