I just don’t want another war against Africans vs. Americans. I’m literally both myself, and I see how both sides can be crazy.
I think Americans are tired of getting people marketed towards them as black, even though they're not and don't like black people or black Americans in general. It seems there's no space for mono-racial, non-ambiguous black people. She should receive no hate at all. She should proudly say she's colored, I'm black African in America, and stand for her identity, but I don't understand why non-American people come to America. We all know what she is and what she's classified as in her home country, however, respecting the rules of the country that's boosting your career is also important. No one is denying that she's "colored" in South Africa and quite frankly, no one here truly cares. The issue is that she's being marketed strategically to blk people in America, knowing absolutely well that our support translates into money. At this point, a lot of us are fed up with being used to grow the careers of people who don't even identify with us. They will use us for support, money and clout but get offended when someone calls them blk. We don't care that she's colored, and given our history, she shouldn't expect any of us to call her that either. Shout out to Trevor Noah, who did his homework before coming to the US. He took no offense being referred to as blk even though he's biracial.

Tyla was mostly influenced by American music culture and she admitted that. She clarified that she is classified as coloured in S.A. and she understand the dynamics of American culture, especially Black American culture pertaining to this issue. For that reason, she cannot prescribe to the Americans how to classify her in their own country in terms of their culture there. Weather they classify her as black or mix race is up to them, no problem. That can never change who she is in terms of South African context. Why people cannot understand this is shocking. Tyla need good representation from us as South Africans and Africans at large, for her own good. She represent all of us in the continent on the global stage. She admired the American culture in terms of their music from younger age. She is now in America to fullfil her childhood dream. Can she now be advised by us South Africans to deny and refuse the black American culture in America, which influenced her music in the first place, come on. The impression that she refuse Black American culture is wrong perception and must be corrected.😊

The main issue is that Americans are ignorant of other cultures. Racism and consequently racial classifications developed distinctly in each country because of each nation’s unique history of colonialism, slavery, and ethnic/racial oppression. Therefore, the evolution of our racial designations are different here in the US than they are in Brazil than they are in South Africa. “Colored” is a racial, state-sponsored designation in South Africa. It also used to be the state-sponsored designation for blacks in the US. When African Americans hear that word though, they erroneously link it to the American usage of the word instead of recognizing the South African context. I’ve even heard Americans call blacks in other countries “African Americans”. 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • @nanostar7660

That’s not the issue. The real issue is that she is trying to break into the biggest music market in the entire world, America, while not being mindful that we don’t like the term for how she is classified. If she wants to be an international artist and an international artist with an audience in America, she needs to change it to make it more culturally sensitive and change the words she refers to herself as because she is now appealing to Americans and the west which does not lake the word used for racial classification in South Africa.
There’s a certain symbol that means peace in Hinduism but means hate in Germany and much of the rest of the world. A person can’t use that symbol as part of their brand and claim it means peace and try to market themselves in countries that have a long and tumultuous history with that symbol. They would have to change it. Same thing here with racial classifications.

And to continue to ask this girl the same question over & over when she's just there to promote her album is disrespectful!
Nobody gives a crap about "what the people want to know!" Its not the peoples business what her race is! This woman is South African! A mix of African, probably Indian, etc! The word "colored" in South Africa doesn't have the same negative connotation as it does here in America! The word "colored" in America goes back to racism and Jim Crow laws, etc. The same can't be said for South Africa!
How in the world does that make her "difficult" to work with just because she doesn't want to CONSTANTLY talk about her race and her definition of "colored", as it pertains to her culture??? To my understanding, "colored" in South Africa means mixed or biracial, if I'm not mistaken.
