"This morning my grandmother is
teaching me something
very important.
She is teaching me that the
easiest (and most elegant) way
to defeat an army of hatred
is to sing to it beautiful songs
until it falls to its knees
and surrenders."
-Lyla June Johnston, from her poem "Hozhó," in the book "Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth."
Last week, we spent two days with Lyla June Johnston filming a music video for her new song "Time Traveler," featured in the first issue of Emergence Magazine. The piece is a poetic reflection on time and the wisdom needed to care for future generations.
Lyla June Johnston is a musician, poet, public speaker and community organizer of Diné (Navajo), Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne) and European lineages. Her messages - shared through hip-hop, poetry, song, and speech - focus on Indigenous rights, supporting youth, inter-cultural healing, and traditional land stewardship practices.
