Thank you Katy, Very soothing as I sit here doing my work. It reminds me of a blind man I had a jam with on guitar 30 years ago (wow how time flies) After a while of play he said "Anthony, what you play sounds quite complicated, can you do me a favour, play something with you eyes shut". So I closed my eyes, gathered my thoughts, then played from the heart. After I stopped the man said that it was the real me coming through. Katy your music reminds me of that day. You have depth to you music, you take your listeners on a journey. The delicate handling of the cello capped of this mellow tune. Have a great day.
I was loaned a cello for several years. I loved playing it. I miss it. I was never as good as you are here but it was so much fun. I did get a few recordings up on my channel with my cello playing in it before having to give it back.
LOL!!! No . . . not two. One. Katy is playing the violin AND the Cello . . . she is also incredibly talented with the audio-visual work in addition to the instruments.
I love your playing. This is the first tune I was taught. I played on my own for several years and decided I was getting nowhere. My brand new teacher was delighted that I knew where the notes were, could read music and play in tune so this was where I started. I was a tough student with ideas of my own but my teacher was good, tolerant and came from a very, very musical background. His fiddle belonged to his great, great grandfather so I usually wound up listening to him.
That truly is amazing. I've watch this presentation many, many times and never noticed the "flight of the bird" until I read Joe's comment. I was so focused on watching/listening to you and your "sister", I completely missed that fine piece of video work. What a beautiful, but sad song. I thought your cello work was excellent and really complemented your, as always, fine violin presentation. Thanks and a belated well done Katy!
Wow, Katy, so impressed that you are boldly going towards the Cello and learning to read the Bass Clef. Beautiful fiddle playing and backing yourself up too. I would love to walk a mile in your shoes! Hurrah!
New comment, next day. A bunch of years ago I played early music on recorder. I played soprano, alto and tenor and one day I decided to multi-track myself since so many tunes were written for several voices. It was a monumental struggle. I had bought myself a Teac 3340 four track tape recorder and began by laying down a click track then recording voice by voice, sometimes re-recording. I mention this because I’m wildly impressed at how well you do the same, not only with sound but video also and it’s obviously well planned and well executed. I’m really amazed. You are fantastic and super creative as well. If I had a hat I’d say hats off to you.
Welcome to playing a cello! I'm also a cellist. I've been playing for about two years now... I've tried playing the violin and the viola, and it turns out that it's easy switching between the instruments. I wish you luck with the cello! It's truly a beautiful instrument...
Thank you so much! =) I've been loving the cello! I signed up to play in the community orchestra with my cello, and although I struggle with Tenor clef, I felt like I could play most of the music okay! We had a John Williams Movie Themes concert on Friday, and it was lots of fun! ^_^
This has always been my moms favorite, and she has been really wanting me to learn it, and I think it's a beautiful piece! You are very amazing at both violin and cello and I want to see more of your channel!
Yeah, my bow hold was wildly incorrect but I did stick to that. Thanks again for your playing. I too have a cello that I love and wunnadeezdaze I’ll take a cello lesson.
There is often debate about what is harder to play, cello or violin. the cellists say that the cello is more difficult, the violinists say that the violin. And I started with the violin and then with the cello. I spent ten times as much on the cello as on the violin. I guess it's a subjective issue. As a friend says, "the most difficult instrument is the first one you learn to play". It sounds good to you. you play the cello with economy and intelligence and that is very important in the interpretation😉
I just played this song on my violin a few months ago at my best friends funeral... 34 year old (we used to joke and call the song "Ashnola farwell" cause we frequented a park called Cathedral Lakes Park along the Ashnola River together). Hearing it again... and so beautifully... made me weep. thank you very much for this beautiful piece. ps.. do you play all the E-string notes on the A string? sounded really nice this way... I think I will have to watch this back many many times and play it this way (also like how you mix in the open strings). On another note... I did the same thing with your Morrison Jig post... played it back over and over to learn it. I can now play it along with you... at 0.50 speed! LOL (thank you youtube for this option)
Katy, thank you for sharing, you played beautifully as always. I've also given some thought to learning cello, but I've heard that the difference in bowing technique can cause wrist problems. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on it
wow! that's so neat about the cello fingerings/bass clef, compared to the violin! It will be fun watching you progress. The cello is beautiful. I've been listening to Natalie Hass play with Alastair Frasier. You're right there are so many beautiful ways to add interest to the bass line. They are amazing together.
Thank you! =) I love listening to Natalie Hass and Alastair Frasier!! I really want to learn how to do all of those neat rhythm accompaniments that Natalie can do. I have a long ways to go before I learn how to do that sort of stuff, but it's been a lot of fun learning so far! ^_^
Every step is progress! How did the transition from playing horizontally to playing vertically go? :) I think that would be my biggest challenge. My family and I are learning St. Kilda Wedding right now, because we love the Frasier/Hass arrangement. I love how they have these original bits in between the original reel/jig too.
Wow Katy!!! How good can it get girl? One of the best on Ytube in my humble opinion!! I had to start learning it after I saw your video. Thanks so very much for your time and talent!!
+1cleandude Thank you so much! =) I'm happy to hear that you are starting to learn how to play it, too! This tune is so pretty and emotional - I love it so much. ^_^
Excellent !! That was amazing , sounded great Katy. I practiced the same piece in an empty church just hear the echo. It sounded so good , my dad filmed it and I posted the video. I wish I had a cello accompaniment, would have added so much more :)
Hello Katy: I just found you on You Tube and am enjoying your playing, as well as your website, and appreciate the pdf music! I have played this tune (and heard it many times as well) and have never heard an interpretation like yours - beautiful. I am going to a workshop this weekend with Jay Ungar himself; we will be playing "Lover's Waltz" - looking forward to seeing/hearing more from you! Where are you from??
Thank you so much! =) It's awesome that you are going to a fiddle workshop with Jay Ungar!! "Lover's Waltz" is a great tune! =) I am from Colorado. ^_^
Can't listen all the way through though , too beautiful . Theres that one note in particular that ought to be illegal for its breathless beauty. Far be it from me to toy with the thought that any type of breathless beauty ought to be illegal maybe , but alas I do , toy that is . Certain beauties should be regulated at least )
Lovely , grand , and bas clefs is mind blowing in the beginning, is a nightmare , have a lot of sheet notes for piano, bought a keyboard (, I play guitar normaly) i still have times when i play keyboard and use my lefthand on the sub notes and still read it as a G keys. the notes is the same but the meaning is different !!! and read Bas clefs backwards ( in my mind) when i read from left to Wright on Daily basis. UUURRGGHHHH, my brain start to Cook - 100 Celsius - Good luck and keep practice cello and read bas clefs , it will be bettter, but is a slow progress
Thank you! =) I used to play that song a lot when I volunteered to play music at retirement homes. I think it definitely needs the sung lyrics to go with it, and my singing voice isn't very good...but I'll put it on my list of songs to work on! =)
Great as always! Next stop, cello tutorial! But seriously tho, was it a real challenge going from violin to cello other than the diff position and for the bass clef?
I still struggle with my left hand going into violin-mode and my teacher yells at me each time it happens...l =S The thumb needs to stay directly behind the second finger, which allows the player to use a cello vibrato (which is very different than violin vibrato. Cello vibrato more like a "whole arm shake" vibrato -- sort of like shaking a maraca lol). The bow hand has been a little easier to get a hold of, although my pinky is still in an awkward position that is half violin-y and half cello-y.. =/ Sometimes my brain flips on a treble clef switch, but learning bass clef with the cello was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. It was a lot easier to relate the bass clef to an instrument that seemed vaguely familiar, and the bass clef seems to "fit the cello" so perfectly that it makes a lot of sense. ^_^
There are some things that translate well between the two instruments, but cello essentially feels like I'm playing the violin backwards. It has me confused, especially with how it feels to use the bow. The other day I saw a "II" in some cello music meaning I needed to switch to a string that felt completely opposite for my bow arm than if I were playing violin. xD I was so confused that I had practiced playing it wrong and thought I had to go up into a high position on a different string... My teacher had to correct me in a lesson lol...yikes!! :P
How dou seemngly have such a nice vibrto , looks years of work long , if you've been Just playing cello for six seven months ? Is this what thye people are callling , "fake news?"
Too slow, the flourishes are a poor choice and, for christ's sake, don't swoop and blur the notes!. Good lord, you made some poor choices. Violin sucks.
This tune always strikes a nerve in me that I cannot explain. Beautifully done.
I listen to this all the time.
I want this rendition at my funeral. :)
Thank you Katy, Very soothing as I sit here doing my work. Two stunning and talented women creating an alluring moment with their instruments beside a beautiful body of water.

Couldn't let me have my dream, could you?

Great playing! But also great video editing. At 1:13 the bird flies seamlessly across the entire screen.
I was wondering if anyone would notice that! :D Thank you! ^_^
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@smlrdo Okay ... not sure what you just said, but I'm easily confused. Still a neat piece of video work. Thanks.
This violinist is absolutely amazing.
Great tune. It always brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for your presentation, Katy. I love your music.
One of the nicer renditions of this tune I've heard.
Fantastic. Its funny, my brother just told me I need to learn this song so we can play together. Great job!
Always wearing the cutest outfits! Missing you baby girl! Tom in Idaho
Wow, Katy, so impressed that you are boldly going towards the Cello and learning to read the Bass Clef. Beautiful fiddle playing and backing yourself up too. I would love to walk a mile in your shoes! Hurrah!
The only thing missing is the echo off of the mountains in the background! Notes sail across the water to us that grasp each one as you play !🧜♀️👏👏💐
I just love this song. Well done!
New comment, next day.

Gorgeous young lady! Gorgeous music too
Amazing rendition of the song!
Great job! And good for you learning the cello! It's such a beautiful instrument.
Awesome music!
Peaceful and relaxing.
So beautifully played. I’m still working on producing the warm tones of this song. I truly appreciate your tutorials.
I am so happy for finding this channel! WOW! I love it! 😍💝💞💞💞

Beautifully played, ladies.
WOW Katy that is so beautiful; very, very well done on both parts!!
beautiful Katy, I played along with a third part harmony, but your arrangement is so complete!
Yeah, my bow hold was wildly incorrect but I did stick to that. Thanks again for your playing. I too have a cello that I love and wunnadeezdaze I’ll take a cello lesson.

This haunting song played during Ken Burns Civil War documentary.
As a Civil War reenactor ,when I die I want my wife to scadder my ashes at Gettysburg while listening to this.
Very nice production. Very well done! Really enjoyed it!

Very nice harmonic accompaniment.
Beautiful song
I like the "Patty Duke" screen effects. Good version of a classic.
Very nice. I also have played this song in a different key I wrote for piano and Baritone horn.
Bravo! Well done!
