  • www.museumspee... The Draaiorgel "De Arabier" so named after the paintings on its highly decorative front was built in 1926 by the well known organ builder Pierre Verbeeck of Antwerp Belgium. After changing hands several times, when in 1935 it came into the possession of the well known Amsterdam organ maker Gijs Perlee senior (1900 -1990) In 1948 Mr. Perlee completely overhauled the organ. For much of the 1950-60s, it was based in the northern Dutch town of Groningen in the care of Mr. Hendrik Elderman where it became very popular. In 1961,the organ went across the Atlantic to New York, where, for ten evenings, it entertained diners in the restaurant of the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
In 2008 the Perlee family decided to donate their entire collection of organs (including the world famous "Arabier") to the Utrecht museum "From Musical Box to Street Organ" Retaining the Arab on permermant loan for outings and competitions.

The best sounding Draaiorgel I know of, and visited family Perlee at Westerstraat in the early 1960's
