I knew YB's vocal style. I heard the teaser. Yet my jaw was STILL on the fucking floor at just how heavy this turned out. Like, I know with the exception of Junsu and Ode most of them are longtime fans of all rock genres including metal, and Jungsu said in a live today that he's learned to love bands like Bring Me The Horizon they've covered before. But I just didn't expect them to really go this hard even with YB featuring. It feels soooo reminiscent of a lot of the 2000s alt and heavy metal I grew up with. I get vibes of Karnivool, Disturbed, A Perfect Circle, Godsmack, even a little early Flyleaf w/ the way the screams/growls come in and contrast w/ the clean singing (the lyrics too kinda feel a little like Flyleaf, minus the vague jesusy vibes they always had). Even the aesthetic and editing of the mv makes my 35 yo ass feel like I've gone back in time. I never, ever thought I would find that specific brand of nostalgia in a Korean band which just amplifies my shock. Tho, I will say the members styling is still that signature over-the-top kpop spin on what a metal band would wear lol.
I feel maybe the reason the exception of Jungsu and Ode the others are longtime fans of all rock genres is because before Jungsu and Ode they were in the band they were idol trainees. So They trained singing and dancing before they switched to a band, so maybe that’s why their music preference is more towards pop or R&b

Junhan is a huge Linkin Park fan so that probably explains the similarities you’ve picked up on. I also sense Bring Me The Horizon influence too!! Jungsu mentioned how he didn’t know much about the metal genre until he became a trainee for XH, but after becoming a big BMTH fan he wanted to try it out and thought it was really fun!!

Holy hell. I only knew YB from some award show performances I've seen and the songs they played there were much softer than this. I was not aware Yoon Dohyun could scream like this. I mean, XH has always been the heaviest of the K-"Pop" bands but to see them go FULL metal here is just glorious. I've been a fan since they started, just saw them live in July which was insane, would have adored seeing this live. They've played a lot with harder songs and so having them finally go full metal is so satisfying. Easily one of the best songs they've put out.

As a metalhead and a K-pop fan, I thought Xdinary Heroes music was alright, however it hadn't grabbed me in a way to go beyond a couple listens or so. With 'Instead!', they may have just changed that!! Since taking the deep dive into K-pop last year, I was kinda surprised that groups hadn't done a song like this (since K-pop does so many genres and they have rock band groups). I sure hope that XH releases more songs like this in the future.
