Huell is a master of the interviewing practice. In this video, everyone around him is giving him NOTHING, but he still manages to keep us all watching. What talent!
Huell makes "California Gold" out of any situation. He's a master. "I'm a real general, not a fuck up." - Brilliant. One of the best quotes ever. Not to mention, "Burt Lancaster's never been here." I think I'll start randomly saying that. The big guy in the blue shirt is rad too. Thanks for the upload!
! RIP HUELL HOWSER ! He will be truely missed ! I wouldnt be the Hood Historian if it wasnt for Huell . I've watched huell since about 1991 when i was in 4th grade growing up in long beach when he was on KCET . Thanks for making the shows and bringing places we drive right by everyday and couldnt care less about to life and showing us the value they once had or still have... I will miss you huell!
It's gotta be when he has the one way conversation on the phone with the owner. "So Burt Lancaster has never been here.....you just bought the picture?" Classic.
Huell was simply enjoyable. He had a habit of asking a question and not sticking around for full answer. One time a park ranger lit into him for doing that. Huell just took it and put it in the segment!!! Too funny!
6:33 "The General is here" That's what they said when Huell entered heaven. RIP to my favorite man in television Huell Howser the King of California TV
Thanks so much for posting this. Many nights visiting my Grandpa on Saturday nights we would always tune in KCET. Grandpa's gone and now a part of my relationship with him is gone. Huell now has the perfect view of California's Gold from his perch in heaven. God Bless Huell Howser's soul.
a friend and I stopped in at the Bag Dad several years ago, on Our way out to visit his cousin in Needles Ca. I had the ostrich Burger and my friend had the buffalo burger. I met General Bob too. say, wheres "Terry" in this video? he was working the counter at the time. my friend asked him where they kept the ostriches, and Terry kidded with him and told him "Oh their out back" LOL. he was cool and a real character. Terry seemed to have psychic ability's also. after talking to the General for a few seconds, I was thinking to my self, that the general was [ umm how can I say this nicely?] "a little more Odd then Even"? and terry piped up that he "didn't like the things I was thinking about the General, that he was his friend and a regular" I was tripped out! Terry agreed to participate in a kind of impromptu psychic test. I drew figures on napkins and had terry concentrate on the back of each napkin as to which figures were on the front. He got 8 out of ten correct! I told him he has a true Gift, with these abilities. and that he was a very strong sender, and that I also had a gift of being a receiver, [the ability to pick up on people's emotions and sometimes but rarely thoughts ] I was shocked when I heard Mr Howser Had passed. he is sorely missed:(
I had the privilege to meet Huell once when he was doing a story on some to-do in Redlands, California. Very warm and genuine. He was just as enthusiastic about everything as he was when he was on camera. I asked him about a story he did about the "Bridge to Nowhere" in San Gabriel Canyon. I had hiked the 4 1/2 miles to get there a few years before. I asked him if he had helicoptered in. He said "Oh, GOODness NO! We'all WALKED!" The way he said it was 100% Huell. You will never be forgotten.
My favorite line: 5:31 - "So you pull over on old route 66 off the 40 freeway and spend the morning in the Bagdad Cafe?" "Well, long enough to eat". I also like how the cook leans back as far away from Huell as possible.
@Luffy55555 I like how, upon hearing "I'm a resident of the world....." Huell suddenly realizes what he's dealing with with the "General". Then, later on (3:29) he totally ignores the General's instruction to read the guest book. Classic show.
This is one of the greatest episodes Huell ever did, it makes me laugh out loud every time I see it. The whole Burt Lancaster thing is hililirous. The General is so great too. You can see Huell is a little afraid of him. And the truck driver "I like to eat here too" Too funny. I have loved watching California's Gold since I came across it back around 1998. Thank you Huell Howser for all the great memories, and for giving all of us so much information about our own backyard. RIP my good man!
Much Love For Andre And The Cafe, If You Don't Know Her ' Don't Judge Her, Spent much time there and LOVED every second of it. she would give you the shirt off her back for anyone in need and DID
'...The unexpected intrusion, the interesting locals, and the over-the-phone interview which finally provides an answer to his speculation about the significance of the painting on the wall !' So perfectly said! This is an absolutely hilarious video (one of the funniest I have ever seen) of a real favorite of mine Huell Howser. Thanx for sharing.
I realize just how special Huell was. I mean, with his build and personality, he could have pursued more lucrative and selfish means of employment, but instead he saw the American Dream in the nooks and crannies of Cali. 7:20-7:40: that laugh represents the joy he found in discovering CA and sharing it with us. Three generations of my family enjoyed his programs and will continue to relate to his enthusiasm for our home state. RIP Huell Howser!
Adam Carolla got a kick out of this guy. He joked about how Huell just showed up, with no notice, and he expected everyone to be glad to chat with him.
my friend and I stopped into the Bagdad Cafe on our way to Needles Ca, many years ago, met General Bob, he was a trip. wondering where their cook [ forget his name ] was in the vid? he was a cook at that time, very nice guy. I had the ostrich Burger ,he cooked it to order with his "secret ingredient" it smelt and tasted delicious. 😋he even sat in my seat at the counter and held it for me while I went to the restroom my friend had the Buffalo burger. loved this place 😀👍 Thanks Loved your ostrich burger" smelt and tasted Great!
this is awesome... and a small break of my heart. i love huell. thank god we can watch the failed interviews too. any more out there??? he still handles it with the simpleton charm that disarms. where the fuck does he come from?
the guys says "read this (pointing to the guestbook) this man's 85 and this man's 82. Read what they're leaving to the world" and then Huell goes straight to reading the menu.
They serve ostrich omelette at the cafe?! Good enough reason for me to visit there from New York City! Huell still performed beautifully even in that weird situation. He seemed a bit uncomfortable and that added to his authenticity.
They should do an independent film about huell Howser and the show and other things surrounding it and have Billy Bob Thornton play the part of huell and recreate this scene at some point in the movie that would be so awesome! LOL there would be scenes where he would just be showing up at places without calling ahead of time and just start interviewing people RFLMAO I'd watch that :-) rest in peace Mr Houser :-)
i grew up there. It use to be called the sidewinder cafe. my mom actually use to work there. Pam and Tommy stopped by on their way to havisu, when they made the famous video. my brother was a dishwasher there when they stopped by. he got their autograph. He also said that tommy was a pretty cool guy and pam was acting like a beotch
lol the ACE MAN always talks about this ep lol i saw this on ch 28 (KECT) back when it was first aired lol i was a kid watching this shit ..I LOVE IT !!!
love it... now I'm going to have to include this cafe in my trek across the US trip! ... I want to meet the "General", think he has some interesting stories to tell...
Gotta watch this simulcast with the 12/5/18 episode of the Adam Carolla Podcast. Huell Howser, sub-par community access level programming with PBS funding.
Caught him off guard on the phone... "Yea, I got the guns and duct tape... yea... yea... I borrowed my grandma's shovel, I told her it was for a garden... no... Huell isn't taping this..."
THis is hilarious. Huell is great. In the 60's you could get a lot more local programming running by the seat of their pants. Always the best. GO Huell!
I have a Huell Howser map of california that shows every place he visited. Normal state map size with Huell Points. Little by little getting to them. Great Map and keepsake!
@@1yotube sorry, just saw this. My Mom gave me the map maybe five years ago. Don’t know if it’s available anywhere now. I don’t know where she got it? Sorry, I am no help☹️
Gotta listen to 4:45 to 4:57, too funny. "Who's this, who is that?" ... "That's her son" ... "The one that owns this place."... "Yeah." ... "Is that who you were talking to on the phone?".... "No, I was talking to the owner." Too funny.
LMFAO ^_^ Adam Carolla talks about this. Burt Lancaster photo on the wall, right? Really old dude: "I'm a resident of the world." Huell: "Oh, wow" *walks away*
I would have never heard of Huell Howser if not for Carolla. Thanks Adam!
HAH
Damn...he fired Ray!
He played this on the show again today
I'm listening to it on ACS right now LOL
I think Billy Bob Thornton would play a good huell Howser LMAO
Huell is a master of the interviewing practice. In this video, everyone around him is giving him NOTHING, but he still manages to keep us all watching. What talent!
This will go down as one of the greatest moments on television history.
Huell makes "California Gold" out of any situation. He's a master.

Thanks for the upload!
This is an amazing piece of television history. Straight out of a David Lynch film, but in real life.
He shook that dude's hand for a full 30 seconds.
-Your a resident of Newberry Springs?
-Im a resident of the world
-Oh, wooow
Huell just gets up and walks away lol. You can tell for a sec Huell’s thinking “This guy’s nuts” then moves on. Was pretty slick about it
@@Danimal1577 Well the old guy did say he was 98. And not a "fukkup" 😆
One of my favorite episodes, this entire situation is just....odd.
Bruce Forrest the phone call was hilarious 😂
Dude! So uncomfortable! LMFAO
Tell us about this place... we're burning up tape here! WTF LMFAO
The long awkward handshake with the cook there was my favorite part.
"We got ostrich, buffalo... uh, everything that's on the menu." Love it!
! RIP HUELL HOWSER ! He will be truely missed ! I wouldnt be the Hood Historian if it wasnt for Huell . 1:58 "I didn't either, they just showed up..." LOLOLOL
This is my favorite UA-cam video of all time.
I'd like to hear more from the General!
He's a resident of the world.
He’s a real General not a fuckup
"There's plenty of quiet in Newberry Springs" he says, yelling the entire time he was there.
Now tell us about this place! We're burning up tape here! LMFAO
Yep. Quiet until Huell brought his loud, obnoxious hillbilly ass there.
6:33 "The General is here" That's what they said when Huell entered heaven. RIP to my favorite man in television Huell Howser the King of California TV

"They don't need to bring in the extras, they're already here! A-hah!"
Huell is awesome. He makes any topic seem interesting.
This is truly the mother of all Huell clips!
Remember folks, this isn't Mississippi, this is California :)
"Am I on TV ?" Classic !
@Luffy55555
I like how, upon hearing "I'm a resident of the world....." Huell suddenly realizes what he's dealing with with the "General".
Then, later on (3:29) he totally ignores the General's instruction to read the guest book.
Classic show.
this is almost surreal. poor Huell!
This absolute gold. He totally dissed "Bob" @ 5:10...haha...I think "Bob" was the cajun guy in The Waterboy movie....hahaha

This is awesome, thanks Carolla!
"The General" has to get his own show!
LMAO!
You know when a video opens with a giant, growling man who looks like he is about to attack, it is going to be legendary!

I am a huge fan of the movie " Cafe Bagdad" and always wanted to visit the actual cafe someday. Hopefully, it is still open until getting to visit!
I lived in L.A. for 5 years and I ALWAYS enjoy Huell Howser - this video is simply WONDERFUL, Funny and it made me LAUGH more than once!!!
They really made you work Huell. I always wondered how many of your vids went like this. Very funny.
Forever missed. PBS, California, all of us won't be the same without you!
I can't believe they showed this on TV!!
haha i like how huell shakes the one dudes hand for at least 25 seconds straight
This is straight GOLD
the guys says "read this (pointing to the guestbook) this man's 85 and this man's 82. Read what they're leaving to the world" and then Huell goes straight to reading the menu.
"and i'm a real general, not a fuck up!"
that's gold
I wonder if they serve Mangria there?
They serve ostrich omelette at the cafe?! Good enough reason for me to visit there from New York City!
Huell still performed beautifully even in that weird situation. He seemed a bit uncomfortable and that added to his authenticity.
Thumbs-up if you only know who this guy is because of Adam Carolla and Dana Gould. That's Amazing!
They should do an independent film about huell Howser and the show and other things surrounding it and have Billy Bob Thornton play the part of huell and recreate this scene at some point in the movie that would be so awesome! Rest In Peace Huell. We'll miss you buddy.
"Ostrich, Buffalo.... everything that's on the menu."
Carolla wasn't lying at all. that was tough to watch.
LOL
Did General Bob say he's "not a f*ck-up" @ 0:48?
Yee gads, Huel ran into a motley crew in this episode.
THis is hilarious. Huell is great. In the 60's you could get a lot more local programming running by the seat of their pants.
Always the best. GO Huell!
That was uncomfortable, but I loved it!
"is that who you were talking to on the phone?" LMFAO!

I never thought I'd say this, but this clip is actually nuttier than Carolla made it out to be. Perhaps the first thing Adam has ever undersold.
