  • Today we test out a $12 SM57 look alike, the Weymic WM57. This inexpensive mic is compared with a Shure SM57 to see how close it comes to the original. Both mics are tested with an LP Jr doublecut style electric guitar with single P90 pickup through the Hotone Britwind/10" Vox speaker combination, and a beautiful 1996 Ovation Standard Balladeer 1861. A CAPI VP26 mic preamp with red dot op amp was used for both mics for these comparisons. None of my videos so far contain any paid promotion. I test things I've bought myself or are on loan from friends and family. Thank you!

Thanks for this! The WM57 is definitely lacking the warm low mids that the SM57 has, and generally sounds brighter/thinner. I'll probably grab a few for things like snare bottoms and percussion

I thought they were decent mics but not a real 57. The GLS ES57 and Samson CS series were great too. I don't think they make the CS series anymore but they were really cool with switchable capsules.

Weymic (7:10), SM57 (8:54). Thanks for the demo, man.

Thank You for doing this demo video. I bought the WM57 to record ukulele, and ukulele hybrid instruments that am using for some commercially licensed music that I am writing and recording.

It's a perfectly good mic for acoustic instruments like Ukulele. It's similar to a transformerless SM57. It was fun to compare it to the Shure. It doesn't sound like an SM57 but it has a good sound and is inexpensive enough to get a few if you need multiple mics.

Good review. I could really hear the difference in the mics in each setting.

If you're on a budget I'd say its a go but SM57 will probably last a lot longer.

I agree. I have a pair of 57s Ive had since 2000 and they are still working and sound good. The Weymic can be useful for the money or as an extra mic to use at a gig.

Great video ! Thank you for making this , these two mics sound very similar. I think I'll order me a few of those Weymics for my setup. Peace !

I'm glad you like the video. The Weynic and the Pyle 57 are probably the same mic and there are other similar mics if you can't find the Weynic. I also really like the GLS ES-57 as well. Those are little closer to a Sennheiser type of dynamic mic.

Thanks. The SM57 has a nicer low end. The Weymic is more strident in the highs. A little EQ could probably tame it & it might be nice for cymbals & snare & some vocalists. Probably a great spare to keep in the gig bag. I just ordered one.

I like it a lot for the price but the 57 has more low end. Still a great value and gets pretty close.

good video, thanks. I just bought the weymic wm57 dynamic in a thrift shop. it has loss wire connection I have to fix, then I will try it. Watching your video I think for the price of $12 it is good deal

They are a good deal for sure. They don’t sound like an SM57 but they don’t sound bad at all.

They aren't bad mics for the money. I also have a Pyle version of the same mic and it's not bad either.

Shure is darker but the Weymic sounds good itself

That's true. I thought it sounded pretty good for $20. They may have gone up since this video was made though.
