    Not a lot of people I trust to tell me dji can do so well on the track. You're one of the few. Thanks for keeping it real.
    If I had to guess, the fov of Sharkbyte is the biggest factor that made it slower.
    And the thing that holds dji back the most I'd guess mostly comes down to weight. 50g ain't nothing.
    I'd love to hear what you think about this analysis.
    I'd bet the difference in latency had very little effect on your times.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, that's pretty much the big thing I learned from this. I really don't think the latency from any of the 3 systems played a major role. I think that if I flew 10 hours on each, analog would have been my fastest, and it would have been primarily because of the slightly lower weight and faster motors. DJI may have struggled because it was the heaviest, but in 1 hour each they each held their own, and I'm still in shock DJI had the fastest lap and top 3.
      For shark byte I think the biggest factor was really that I went first. Had I ran shark byte last I guarantee it would have ton better. The FOV probably would have helped the consistency, but I don't think it really hurt my best top 3 time.

    It has left me feeling that I made the right decision, which is nice. Thanks.

    Great comparison :)
    In such an open environment the latency of DJI should be pretty low, so feeling conftable with the aspect ratio and fov probably has a bigger impact then the latency.
    For me the hassle of flieing DJI with other non DJI pilots is not worth it for me, so i fly Shark byte. I am not that of good pilot thou.
    At the end of the day everyone should fly what he feels conftable with.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому

      The hassle of DJI is totally true. I'm honestly an organizer first and racer second at this point, and it's tough managing DJI pilots at a race. So I still won't race with DJI, and I'll only use it at the field if there are very few people. This test day I showed up at 8am when nobody else was there so it was easy to get all my testing in. With Shark Byte I can just fly it without worrying about interfering with anyone else.

    Great video! Interesting results. I need to get a couple of those HD Switchbacks to play with, as my DJI setup is pretty fugly. I just crammed the vista on top of a 20x20 stack and have this massive 40mm tall monstrosity. Whenever I have flown the three systems back to back, although I will say it hasn't been quite as extensive as your data gathering here, is that I think my times are all relatively similar, but the "feel" is off. Analog and Sharkbyte for me felt very similar, with SB capped in FOV as you mentioned. DJI has massive FOV, but it feels "different" for some reason. I don't know if its just different goggles on my head, or that my SB/Analog rigs are Tracer while DJI is crossfire, or maybe my DJI rig is just poorly setup and that 533 would help bring it more in line with a normal quad, etc.
    I am super pumped for the future of Sharkbyte though. Even if DJI can get similar lap times, I don't see DJI fixing any of the issues that we have been asking for with regards to integration into the racing system. Meanwhile Divimath and HDZero has been going crazy with aligning with current race systems and very active in our community!

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому +2

      thanks Spicy! I agree on everything across the board. It sounds like your experience exactly matches my experience prior to this test. I previously had my DJI race quad on crossfire and it always felt different to me. I never had the confidence with DJI that I had with others. I do wonder if using the low latency control link was what made things feel so much better for me now, or if perhaps it was the janky build that I too used to have versus a proper optimized build.
      So if you get a switchback HD to try and then set it up with tracer, I would be curious if your experience matches mine here.
      Regarding actually racing at events, I agree 100x over, shark byte integrates so easily it's a no brainer. DJI is still a logistical headache, and it's hard to see that changing in the near term. But it's also super encouraging to me that competitively it can be there.

    Do you think the change in angle of the camera, the fact that you were already warmed up from SB, and the 4:3 view has anything to do with your results?
    Either way just fly what you like and be merry. Happy landings.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому

      yes all of those things play a big role. The results to me don't say A is better than B. But rather they say both A and B can be competitive at a pretty high level, and honestly that really surprised me.
      I guarantee if I ran DJI first and Shark Byte second Shark Byte would have been faster, but I'm honestly glad I didn't because it helped show DJI can perform very well too.
      All that said, personally I'm racing Shark Byte a lot now, and I honestly have no interest in racing with my DJI racer. Even after the results of this test.

      The lens is probably the most important aspect of what makes me prefer the digisight camera to the runcam nano. Lots of people have been testing different lenses, and I don't think the right solution has been found yet. However, lens options are actively being looked at to see if it will be the solution.

    I think this test is slightly flawed though tbh. You should of run it the other way round. So your most familiar system to the least familiar. Analogue, DJI and then SB. Reason I say this is that you warm up and get better throughout the day.
    An even better way to do it would be run the systems on different days. So the first day use SB, the 2nd dji and then 3rd analogue. That way you haven't used one system to warm up for the next.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому +1

      yes the test is slightly flawed. I would say doing it on different days would also be flawed, and even doing it in the opposite order was flawed. The point of the test was not to say "A is better than B", but intsead show that I could be just as competitive with each, and to me that's what this showed. I did not expect to be able to be competitive with DJI no matter what advantages I gave it.
      The best I can think of is trying to switch between them every 30 minutes or so so they have an equal time of "warmed-up" flight.

    • @fpvnerd2124
      @fpvnerd2124 3 роки тому

      @@JohnEFly I disagree tbh. I did a test similar, in the format sense to this. But with 2 different frames(same components). Old frame design(racing it for a year) vs New frame design(racing it for a week). The fastest lap time was recorded by the second drone(old) I tested in that session. Although I was more consistent and enjoyed flying the new frame more. If I would of used the Old frame to warm up with and recorded its results first. I would of blitzed the old frames time I reckon. Run it again but differently and see if you get different results.
      But what I'm trying to say here is that warming up and familiarity tends to floor these sorts of tests.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому

      honestly that wasn't the goal of the video. DJI is extremely logistically challenging when it comes to racing. Shark Byte is super simple logistically when it comes to racing. For managing races, Shark Byte is clearly the better answer right now.
      However, this was to look at the latency of DJI and compare how that impacted me on the track. As mentioned I did that before, and it had a big impact, this time it didn't. I was extremely impressed with how well DJI performed from a flying a track perspective. But I personally would never use it at a race right now, because of the current logistical issues.

    Great overview. There is a lot of nonsense and noise that you can’t race with DJI and only SB is a viable analog replacement. The reality is this is going to come down to personal preference. Both systems are more than capable in the right hands.
    Something interesting you touched on was the immersive ness of DJI. This is a big factor in how the system feels as well.
    People get too hung up on latency and there is a placebo affect with off these systems when people first get on them that I thinks makes these feel it’s a bigger issue than it is.
    The realty is both of these systems at short range as you have shown are more than capable of delivery what a pilot needs. The rest is then personal preference.
    Fantastic video and subscribed 👍

    It's expected... A heavier quad will be faster and give more confidence feeling for most pilots unless they are the best. It's because the tilt angle has to be larger for a lighter quad provided that the speed is the be same.

    Great video! I fly both systems as well and I do prefer the dji system as well due to the added field of view and the 120fps mode. Seems more fluid and natural to fly. I don’t think latency is an issue especially in a race setting (open field).
    Did you notice any stuttering while flying either shark byte or dji? I know people complain that dji feels laggy or they can feel the variable latency. I didn’t notice that in my testing. Your dji dvr looked very smooth.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 роки тому +1

      I did have some bugs with DJI during that 1 hour. There were 2 or 3 batteries where the system set itself to a really ugly high latency mode for some unknown reason. Everything felt super laggy and the picture was super ugly, not the typical picture I was flying with. The funny thing is when I reviewed the DVR, all of the runs like this played back at 2x speed. So somehow something got confused where it was sending 60fps and it expected 120fps and then it recorded 30fps as if it was 60fps or something like that. Otherwise I didn't have any issues.
      I didn't have issues with shark byte at all during the day. But there have been times where I have felt it stutter. So it's not completely immune, but usually it's solid.
      I wouldn't say I prefer DJI, both are good solutions in different ways. Personally I'm much more excited about Shark Byte for actually racing, but you can't deny that I was able to fly well with DJI. In the past I felt that DJI made me lack confidence on the track. But now I wonder if it was DJI + crossfire that wasn't good enough and somehow now with ghost + DJI it's better... but really who knows, I just know the other day it felt awesome.
