You you funny as hell! Thank God your a jeeper! Thanx for all the help, you probably saved a lot of people in this video, that skid plate holding up the transmission is something we all didn’t know!
I'm glad I looked at this because I looked at the transmission mount and I looked at the skid plate and was instantly confused because I've never seen a design like this in my automotive career and now I'm a new Jeep owner
Lol, you are the greatest! Thanks for these informative videos, my YJ is all rusted and I’m battling my back gate screws. Will be using all of your ideas. Thank you
Great video, I have an 89 YJ and have a slightly different mount on mine. Got my plate off but the two middle inserts are shot, and the holes in the plate for them are rusted to the point the bolt head fit through them (well, one was already missing when I got the Jeep) gonna probably need a new plate. (The area where the mount bolts to has had a secondary plate added and a bad weld job done to it and is rusting badly as well!)I went to the black magic brake site and watched the video link they had on how to do the inserts, pretty cool, ordered the kit and the tool. Thanks for all your videos, they are my favorite as the lighting and editing are top notch.
Good video! Might be worth noting that those spacers on your jeep are drop-spacers that form part of your lift kit. Stock ride height YJs, that have the original factory skid plate mounts, will not have the spacers.
As someone who also drives a lifted yj i would recommend doing a sye kit with a custom driveshaft by adams driveshafts you can get rid of the skid spacers and gain some clearance and you can also move to a belly up skid with no problems at all
Thanks for this video. I need to replace the cat-back on my TJ and I knew I have to support the trans if I drop the skid plate. I like your suggestion on putting stands on both sides. I am going to try using extensions on my socket first to get at the 2 nuts on the catalytic converter, but if i need to drop the plate, you gave me some great help!
Thanks for all the videos, I just bought a yj and am really enjoying all your videos. They are helping me understand my Jeep. I have a catalytic converter heat shield that has come loose right above the skid plate and was looking to see how to get it out of the the easiest.
On my last YJ, 6 of 6 bolts broke clean off, flush with the frame. On my current, MUCH more rust free YJ, 2 of the 6 broke. I think your YJ is an uncharacteristically pristine specimen for showing these how-to's. That is a great thing for you, since you own very clean jeep, but most people would very quickly get into trouble tackling this on a 30 year old rusty jeep. A better video for me would show where it all goes wrong, and how to grind out, then re-weld in the rivnuts, or any number of other clever fixes. Don't get me wrong, you did a great job on your video, but I would guess the vast majority would not have it go that well. Cheers.
Occassionally spray everything under your Jeep with rust converter to stop the spread of rust. They come clear, and black. The black looks like flat black paint which will improve the appearance of the bottom of the Jeep.
Sir, do you know what size bolts are supposed to be holding the transmission mount in place against the transmission? My sons 89yj 2.5 manual is missing them. We have a new mount and pulled apart today, low and behold the mounts to the transmission itself are not there. Any help would be appreciated. Your channel Is extremely helpful.
My YJ has a significant rattle around the skid plate when under load or bogged down. Really hoping I don't have to take off the skid plate to fix the rattle.
JeepSolid love your videos man !! You have helped me and my yj Out so much, I was wondering if next you can do a how to remove swaybar disconnects , ive seen videos on how to but they don’t show you in details , I’m having Issues taking mine off on my 93 yj stock sway connect, I wanna install quick disconnects but can’t seem to take off the old ones .... any help would be appreciated ! Keep up the good vid and don’t disappear on us man ! Lol
What are your thoughts on cracking open the transfer case while it's under the vehicle to change the chain, instead of removing the entire case? I realize the best option would be to take the case out and rebuild it, but I simply don't have the time or money to do so at the moment.
Really Really great instruction on how to remove the SP! So a few questions if you have the chance. My 1995 YJ seems to not have the spacers. I am not sure if this is an oversight or not. The prior owner broke one bolt. Someone told me that the spacers are there to allow water drainage from the frame, is this true? If that is the case, I might attempt this job. Contemplating a 2.5 lift, do you think I will REQUIRE the adjustment of the SP? So when you speak of using the 5lb hammer- do you strike the bolt head or on side of frame? When you use a torch, where are you applying the heat? Any other useful tips come to mind since video was made? I like the side mirror mounts for the mirrors. Do they combine the off-road lights as well, or is that a seperate bracket? Hey, big thanks for this video!
No problem. Thanks for watching. The spacers that lower the skid plate are part of the lift kit for the Jeep. My jeep has a 3.5" lift, and the spacers help keep the drive lines from too steep of an angle. If your bolts are giving you trouble, hit them with PB blaster, striking them with a hammer shocks the threads and can help break them lose, finally heat where the bolt threads in may help as well. My side brackets can accommodate the 3" lights and mirrors.
At 15:01 of the video you removed the mounting bolt ( the one with the large washers ). I noticed it was a little lose prior to you getting the wrench on it. My question is : is that mounting bolt supposed to be lose like that ? How tight should it be ? Thx
Great video I wish I had watched about 3 hours ago. I started dropping the skid plate without supporting the transmission and after it sagged a few inches, I jacked everything back up and started looking for answers. With everything bolted back in place, 2nd gear now slips out at low speeds while not pushing on the gas. Where do you recommend I start looking? Thanks!
Walked out of my house this morning to see my '94's skid plate just hanging by the front two bolts. I'm in the upper Midwest, where this YJ has seen 25 years of winter salt: do you have any advice on getting new nutserts into a rusty frame?
hey bro, question. My parking brake release shaft doesn't retrack back after I have released the brake. I have a 1990 wrangler YJ. I've have search the internet to no avail. Is it a spring thats missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Wish that I saw this video two months ago about supporting the the transmission and transfer case. Dropped the mount and then got in he. Jeep and took it out of first gear. The transmission and transfer case fell down pulling the rear drive shaft almost out of the transfer case. Bottom line is that bit ruined the transfer case. Mechanic gave me an estimate of $2,350.00 to fix it. What a dumb thing I did!
If I'm about to drop my transfer case to see if I can fix it. How long do you think this would take? what are some things I would run into as a novice home mechanic? :P
I’m planning on removing the transfer case to replace gasket and the main real seal... do I need to remove the skid plate ? I recently got it but I noticed previous owners welded the skid plate lol ! Please help !
Once again EXCELLENT video site and I have a question. I'd like to remove my 95 YJ air conditioner. I've had these go on other vehicles along with the belt snapping.. This is a weekend only joy ride vehicle and given my location summer heat is short lived. By removing the unit and installing a "by-pass" pulley will I have any problems you know of ? Thanks in advance...
So I came across your video because I am removing the skid plat to remove part of the exhaust system in order to change my oil pan. 1 bolt came out fine 1 broke and the 3rd is spinning. How would you get a spinning bolt out. Thanks
Great video! Question, I have 91 jeep and it won't stay in four wheel hi or low. So I am planning to remove the transfer case. When removing the skid plate, should I support under the transfer case as you did, then after the skid plate is out of the way, add another jack to the rear side of the transmission to have two jacks on the transmission? Also, do yoiu have a video in removing the transfer case? I really like your videos
Thank you again. I really like your videos. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask another question. My problem is the shifter doesn't like to stay in gear (4 H or 4L). I need to make sure it is not the linkage assembly or shift mechanism before I pull the transfer case. I removed the linkage and freed the adjuster to move and put it back in place but it is only marginally better. i was wondering if it might be anything related to the base of the shifter arm? Do you have any experience with this? I just have a feeling it is not the transfer case. Ed@@JeepSolid
Very cool video, I have a 95 Sahara but I think most stock wranglers use a standard hex bolt not a Allen bolt like that jeep. I`m gonna PB blast mine for about 2-3 weeks, maybe even drill a small hole on top in the frame to really get it lubricated. Then hit it with a impact. For me using blunt torque ends up breaking the bolts, like my body bushing mount in the rear :(. I really enjoy your videos, and I hope to see more! (Keep the bloopers going :P)
My torque bolt for the transmission mount is missing on my "just acquired" 1993 YJ. Anyone have a part number or source for the complete bolt with nut, washers, bushing?
Great! Glad it helped. I have an engine removal video that'll be up tomorrow (or saturday...depending how late I'm up. Haha) . I'll show engine mounts in that video.
done and done! thanks buddy! I used your vids for the tranny mounts, engine mounts, all the fluids, thermostat. basically everything you are doing, I'm using it!! keep up the awesome work!!
I recently installed a new transmission mount and torque arm in my 1990 yj. Im still getting excess movement out of my transmission while driving. I purchased some energy suspension urethane bushings and installed them but they're much thinner than the oem rubber bushings so there is a bit (1/2"-3/4") of space between the ear ointment trans and the bottom bushing . Any ideas?
@@JeepSolid Well, the issue is that power isn't going from the motor to the wheels. I think it's the transfer case because the gear shift feels like it's shifting correctly, but that was before I removed it.
Did the welds hold on the transmission mount bracket ? Its me from other transmount vid im also gonna investigate engine mounts the noise is located near shifters on the floor so why figured trans mounts 👌

I'm glad I looked at this because I looked at the transmission mount and I looked at the skid plate and was instantly confused because I've never seen a design like this in my automotive career and now I'm a new Jeep owner
Just picked up a 95 YJ and your videos are like gold. Thanks for the tutorials..
Awesome! I'm glad they're helpful.
I just bought a nice old 1994 YJ Sahara and I've been enjoying your videos trying to learn about my new toy.
Great job , keep 'em coming.
