It makes it even more impactful to remember that ace’s whitebeard tattoo was his pride and joy, never letting anything scar it. The symbolism of him turning his back to akainus blow, letting his tattoo be scarred to protect luffy. Really speaks volumes about his priorities

most of their reactions sounded fake tbh so either they are trying to act it up for the camera which is killing their content because they look stupid or they watched this prior to recording and watched it again they just suck at acting
What's worse is the fact that they've all been talking about scars on the back being a warrior's shame. So, not only did he sacrifice his life, but also his pride to save Luffy.
Luffy was only 17 at this point of time, a mere boy in a situation he should not be in at all. He is there because of his love for his brother Ace and he would do more than just to rescue Ace but to protect his interest in many other smaller details like the Vivre card. It shows the close brotherly bond that they would put their lives on the line for one another. I believe Luffy would gladly trade his own life to save Ace which he has shown many times over and over again throughout his long ordeal from Impel down arc onwards. It was Ace that understood Luffy's incredible sacrifice including all the comrades that fell at Marineford just to rescue him. Whitebeard himself was also mortally wounded by Squard, ensuring that Whitebeard would now bear the full brunt of leading the charge into Marineford so as to preserve and conserve lives on his own side. Therefore Ace was more than ready to repay the "debt" by putting himself in between the Magma strike by Akainu, absorbing the momentum with his own flesh.
It did especially in Japan. You know anime/manga is a very big deal in Japan. I think i saw a news or read an article about this, where people have been seen literally crying in the subways, streets etc when this chapter came out
Emotionally, that would be heartbreaking but Luffy is the bedrock in the series. It would be really uncharacteristically if him to do that gives that he is the MC- oda wrote Luffy so that other pain could be cut by him.
Oda already said that if luffy or ace asked garp to rescue them. He would. But both knew how important the marines and his duty to garp. They didnt want him to become a traitor.

As a long LONG time fan of the show There is a bittersweetness to seeing first timers go through the same pain/trauma we went through. First Merry now Ace.
No matter how much I re-watch this scene it always makes me cry 😔 Imagine how strong Ace must've been right now in latest episode. Damn, he fought Jimbei and ended up in draw even though he was still 17 years old. And at that time Jimbei was the captain of the sun pirates and yet Ace managed to draw their fight despite he's young and just recently started his journey. This really amazed me. I can't imagine how strong Ace would have been now if he's still alive.
This really showed prominence with finally revealing a weakness to Logia Devil Fruits. When it comes to Logias, they become living elemental incarnates; but here it showed Logias (by each other in this case) can be damaged if they're overwhelmed by comparable affinities by an elemental hierarchy. In which the elemental hierarchy in this case for this example showing that while fire & magma are similar, the power-clash of the Element of Fire is Inferior to the Element of Magma
I know a lot of people get pissed at Sengoku, and I get it, but he was genuinely trying to protect Garp. Maybe Garp could beat Akainu, but Sengoku didn't want to chance it, plus infighting would make their cause that much worse off. I do respect Sengoku to a degree as he takes no joy in overseeing Ace's execution, he just sees it as a necessary action; he has no personal ill-will towards Ace or Whitebeard. Plus as we see later on, Sengoku clearly does not like Akainu all that much, though he respects him as the new Fleet Admiral. He respects the rank, but not the man.
You couldn't have the hero of the navy fight the future fleet admiral. It's not a popular opinion, but I as much as I hate Sakazuki, I respect him. From a marine perspective, you see so many people die in this battle and for what? He at least completed the execution and did finish WB (I refuse to give that kill to Teech)
Garp definitely could beat him, also if Ace and Luffy asked to save them he would have done it, but they also knew that Garp lived for the marines and desperately wanted to avoid this from happening, along with their pride wouldn't allow them to do that to him.

The opening just after this arc, "Fight Together", just enhanced that feeling of grief and I had to admit, I wasn't really interested in a backstory for a character who just died and would make me miss them even more. To think that Luffy fought off Hancock's sisters, snuck into Impel Down, nearly died several times, escaped from Impel Down, fought through Marineford, rescued his brother only to see Ace die before his eyes because of his foolishness? Yeah, that's a shot to the heart if I ever saw one. Easily the most tragic death in all of anime.
