I like how Sonic breaks the fourth wall as he stands still, staring at the player while tapping his foot. It's a subtle reminder that it's in his character to always be on the move!

@@sonictheblockhog5780a gatekeeper in general is someone who tries to push people away from anything that they have knowledge about or enjoy, whether that thing be a game, an ingredient to a recipe, a franchise, a comic book or tv series. It tends to happen like this, 'you shouldn't talk about x if you're not knowing in that field' or whatever toxic manner could lead to driving someone away from x.
That's been his entire character since the first game
It's not as scary in Superstars as it was in the original. I also think it would've been a nice touch if they went as far as to make Sonic look more panicked or worried before he drowned, like in Colors.
True, superstars is definatly less scary, and the music in the classics is terrifying with the 8 or 16 bit music, and the creepy undertones, making the music higher quality makes it less scary
I think it is less scary because of the water color, most fo them Sonic just holds that straight face, but the water there were darker.

Fun fact: In Sonic Advance 3, there was no gurgling sound upon drowning.
Any cause of death makes a 'Boom' sound; especially as you can hear
when Sonic drowns in this game as well.

Nothing is more stressful than when you’re in the area in Chemical Plant Zone with the blocks and you’re drowning and it feels like the blocks are moving slowly! That’s why I always use Tails to get to the top!
The way sonic 3 tails just stayed like he already gulped an air bubble while in the other games he just accepts his fate and drowns with sonic

I think the modern death animation is more *jump* “oh… I didn’t make it” scarier and the classic music is (obviously) much more hyper and scary

I was one the player’s experienced anxiety when i 1st played those older Sonic games when i was young, hehe
THE DROWNING MUSIC IS STRESSING ME OUT. I played Sonic Mania and I just kept drowning in the one place shown in the top right. Every time, I’d wind back there after drowning and would make one mistake and fall. I’d start jumping, realizing I was going to drown again, then that darn music would start and I could feel my heart drop. I’m so thankful Tails is there to save me.
Sonic Mania is not a Classic Sonic game, neither is Superstars. Sure they replicate the gameplay of the classics and use the classic designs for the characters, but they were made way after those had come out. The last classic Sonic game is Sonic 3D Blast (1996), and the best one in my opinion. Maybe we could call Mania and Superstars as "neo-classics".
One would be unaffected from this music when not playing the game. In the game, and bored into the sonic fans, is the true stress and fear.
Most sound effects in Superstars were reused from Mania and Lost World and also they couldnt be asked to add the drown sfx but hey not everything can be Perfect Cell

Chemical Plant made me drown to that music so many times that when i finally beat it and moved to aquatic ruins, i got reminded of Chemical Plant Act 2 and switched off the game
It's good to know that it's stressful as always, that's the touch of pain of classic aquaticas, they'll never be forgotten because of this song
I don't remember hearing the drowning music even once during my playthrough

They add more panic in the old one. The new one is less panicky

In Sonic Superstars you can also drown on land but only in Lagoon City Zone
Not gonna lie, wish they used that blargh sound when the timer hit zero like in those older games
I wish the sonic team cooked up their own music. Most sounds are ripped straight from mania and generations.

I've played Sonic Superstars on the PS5 and I've only drowned once on my first playthrough.
When i was playing Sonic 2 the water section is the hardest part
The drowning sound scared me when i was 5-9 year old
Hearing this gave me anxiety all over again 😂

As long as that horrific music plays it will still be horrifying

Well... THAT, and whenever I play the classics NOW I hardly EVER stay submerged in water for longer than I ever need to, so... I NEVER drown in water levels anymore anyway! 🤣🤣🤣

Imo superstars is not as stressful as S2 and S1. (Essay alert) uhhh S1 labyrinth is just eternal hell (besides the music) And S2 chemical plant was my first time over in a sonic game. Not to mention Aquatic ruin was way better due to a little more speed.
