    I like this idea of balance that Saulė and Menulis are supposed to hold. This whole belief is so inspirational!

    Didn't hear this interpretation of myth before. But it's seems more acceptable variant, as the one where Moon was punished or chopped apart.

      Yeah, I also only knew the version where Perkūnas as the god of justice punished Mėnulis for his infidelity by chopping him in parts and letting him be full only once a month

    Hey, Saulė is pronounced S not Sh. What source you used to based the video from? Saulė and in the most cases Mėnulis (in some cases not husband and wife but brother and sister) has 7 daughters and they are the main planets: Žemė (Earth) , Aušrinė, Vakarinė both means Venus, because Balts thought is two different planets) ), Indraja (sometimes mother of Saulė, wife of Perkūnas/ sometimes twin of Sėlija - Jupiter) , Vaivora (Mercury), Žiezdrė (Mars), Sėlija (Saturn); so is better to say that daughters, not unrelated deities. Each one has her own character and stories. And we could talk about changing of carriages and mythological travel over sky's globe. Because the Moon is shepherd of stars and Saulė shepherd of clouds and both roles need to be maintained.

      Of course there is a less popular version that Aušrinė and Vakarinė served as servants to saulė and Mėnulis, and was too beautiful, so Mėnulis, husband of Saulė, decided to get one of the sisters. Vakarinė said no, but Aušrinė agreed to be Mėnulis lover and they planned the wedding at Summer solstice . Saulė heard about the wedding ant asked Perkūnas for justice, because to have another wife, when you are married allready was forbidden. The wedding were cancelled and Aušrinė left near altar alone. Now she is crying and her tears comes to Earth as morning dew (rasa), at summer solstice (Rasos festival), at the anniversary of destroyed wedding their are the most powerful and if you bath in this morning dew you be forever young or at least your face becomes younger as it consumes devine beauty shared by Aušrinė. So you can't sleep during Summer solstice and need to wait for the morning dew to get enough life force for one more year (also unmarried ones at this night goes looking for Papartis ( fern) ring - the marriage and start of child, which are guarded by king of snakes and/or witches (Raganos) or sometimes Laumės creates misleads - it's another story)

      There are 3 elder daughters Aušrinė (the oldest), Vakarinė and Žiezdrė, which even could walk in Earth, Žemė is in the middle, and 3 younger ones Indraja, her arcenemy Sėlija and Vaivora lives near mother Sun still under the care. because 7 is not a Balts luvky number, but western and in balts everything goes as triads, there are believe that there could be other 2 daughters (maybe equivalent to Sirius and one more (Neptune?) whichwhere deleted over time from history).

      We could notice that in Balts the ancient primal world till the rise on Perkūnas in Middle ages and reversion of gods pantheon importance, caused by the Christianity impact, is more matriach then patriarch, vice versa then in western world, where Luna is a woman and Sol is a man.

    I haven't heard this version either. I was under the impression from the dainos that Mėnulis had an affair with Aušrinė, not a mortal woman. Who was the mortal women? Where does this version originate from?

    • @BalticWorld
      @BalticWorld  Рік тому +5

      Hi wayward, doing research for these was an interesting challenge in that multiple versions of most stories have been passed down regionally even from within the Lithuania. For example, some accounts had Aušrinė in love with Menulis but he doesn't return the affection, always distant and aloof. We'll do a video at the end of the series explaining the methodology - in the meantime if you learned a different version growing up definitely leave it down in the comments section and we will discuss. We have plans to do something with the series after it's all published so we will want to achieve as much consensus on these things as possible.

      @@BalticWorld it's not easy to summarize Baltic mythology because different tribes had different versions of myths. From Lithuania side is easier to connect Aukštaitija's part, Samogittia sometimes could be classified even as a separate country so have their own stories, and thanks to Kaipėda's university scholars we have a partially well reconstructed merged Prussian side. Sadly, the ethnolinguistic studies mostly are destroyed in Lithuania, because nobody chose to study. I am interested in our mythodology as a hobby in many years and would be lovely to participate in this ancient charming world recreation and summarizing, that it achieved finally Greek pantheon and stories level :)
