    Backspin imparted on the cueball transfers onto the first red as topspin, causing it to run on into the pocket. Putting topspin on the cueball has the opposite effect and essentially stuns the red into staying on the table.

    • @estranhokonsta
      @estranhokonsta 4 роки тому

      Yes that must be the principal reason.
      One another thing is that, with top spin (transferring potential backspin to the first/contact red ball), the white ball continues forward and push the first red ball toward the second. At the time of the collision of the two red balls, the deviating angle of the first ball to the side of the pocket is amplified by its own backspin, small at it may be.
      When the white ball has backspin (and so giving potential top spin to the first red ball), the said collision between the two red balls also happens, but the acceleration is very different and also the interaction between the two red ball.

      I was aware of this effect and believe it can control to balls 'jumping' out of pockets (on lesser quality tables) if struck firmly and the white with screw.

    This particular shot is featured in the book "The 99 Critical Shots in Pool" by world champion Ray Martin. In it he writes "Simply hit the cue ball with a strong draw(screw). The backspin on the cue ball puts forward spin in ball "A" it rolls forward to sink ball "B", and then follows it into the pocket." A must have for any cue sports fan. Ever give it a read Barry?

    The first ball you hit takes the opposite spin you cue with.
    Same in pool, it’s very important in one pocket when your working in tight areas and need to control the object balls that are not potted.
    Nice video!

    For the top spin, it translates to back spin on the middle ball while the ball next to it gets the forwards spin? Can we see it in slow motion with stripes set in a way we can see the rotational movement?

    Barry I got to play for the first time on a star snooker table yesterday and I was blown away by how beautifully it plays. I was amazed by the fact that I thought it would be much harder to play due to the slick cloth (i was informed that the table had the last version of strachan cloth, the number 10 I believe). However, I found it far easier to play on a professional table like this as I was able to not hit the balls to hard in order to get the correct action on the cue ball. As a result, I was able to get my highest break ever in a line-up: 61. Why do you think I find it easier to play on these professional tables as opposed to tables with heavier cloth? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому +1

      Robert. Certainly not having to hit the balls hard can assist with potting and positional play but I am surprised that you say you found it easier. Most club tables have more generous pockets than a Star table and this fact generally counteracts the firmness of strike. The line up on any table is quite an easy practise for any player with a certain amount of skill, the real test comes in a game when the Star table with a slick cloth can actually make a player look a little silly.

    Is it not good to practice on a medium snooker table rather than the big one , for me it's no different , because the technique, the cue action and break building, I'm working on , remains the same right ?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому +1

      Sefyan. Lets be honest here, playing on grass is better than not playing at all, equally playing on a smaller table rather than full size will have its benefits. However, we all know that there is nothing quite like distance to examine technique that's why it is harder to pot long shots rather than short ones. Most pros started our playing on small tables and found it beneficial when they started to play on a full size one so keep going and good luck.

Is this due to the difference in the tables and balls? I am quite confused.

    Very interesting about the transference of rotation due to friction between the balls.
    Another transference of rotation that I only just have become curious about is side spin being imparted to any ball after hitting a cushion at an angle other than right (e.g. not 90 degrees). Perhaps you could shed some light on this and how it can effect the trajectory of balls.
    Cheers Barry, I always look forward to new videos from you.

    Good answer has been given in the earlier comments, top spin translates to backspin and vice versa. Barry, could you please make a video on sighting while going down on the shot? I am potting more consistently balls with angle than straight shots and believe it's related to sighting/vision, but how to identify what exactly is wrong?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому +2

      Cool. Yes the earlier answers are correct. If you are having problems potting straight balls it generally is because of incorrect cueing. There is no assessment or guess work involved and most people aim correctly but they miss because they do not deliver the cue where they are aiming. On angle shots, it may seem strange but some players feel more comfortable with them because when they miss they just assume they have aimed wrong or when they are successful they may have guessed the angle correctly. There can be no guess work on a straight shot it is simply straight cueing. Please examine your cueing on the baulk line and over the spots the answer generally lies there somewhere. Good luck.

    Just discovered these videos! great stuff, really interesting. Question: was watching video from Bob Meucci pool cue maker on Pool. He says centre ball striking is almost impossible and if you miss centre of cueball you won't know which side you missed it by and can't make correct adjustment. Therefore better to strike cue ball very slightly to one side or the other and then you can make correct adjustment when aiming. Left for left handed people and right for right handed people. Seems to work great on an 8ft Pool table. would be very interested to hear your views on this.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому

      Robin. My view on this is that it can be difficult to hit the ball in the centre but certainly not impossible. The really difficult part is to cue through the centre and that is where lots of players struggle, wonder why they miss and where the side has come from. Potting at snooker demands more cueing accuracy than pool and I am not in favour of using side unnecessarily.

    Hi Barry. Could you make a video on how to transport your cue overseas safely? I’ve seen some players use ski tube cases when flying abroad to tournaments. Just wondering if this is essential or if you can use a particular durable case instead. Thanks

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому

      Tom. Unfortunately all cues have to be placed in the hold these days and some do get damaged so it is essential they are adequately protected. All the pros will not take the risk and invest in a ski tube. I am afraid that even the metal cases that are quite substantial are probably not durable enough to stand the battering they get from baggage handlers during air travel.

    Hello sir. I'm from Pakistan and great fan of your videos. Just wanted to know how can you improve your positional play during a game considering every single time there's a different scenario created by the red balls. There must be some basic tips for increasing good positional play to overcome every single scenerio created by the red balls.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому +1

      Abdul. There is no secret formula just practise. A few tips would include, don't let the cue ball travel too far when playing position. Try to play position by coming into the line of the shot rather than across the line. Don't play for one ball when you have the option of playing for two or more. It is often advisable to play for an area rather than being too specific. Learn the geometry of the table and play a little billiards to tighten your cue ball control up. Lastly, always try to leave an angle on the pot which gives more positional opportunities.

    Barry could you possibly answer this one if you are practicing a long blue from the bulk line at the yellow side and if I miss it it is always just to the left of the black pocket.
    Playing at a medium pace are u flicking a bit of left hand side on it or possibly right hand side ?
    With Thanks Charles

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому

      Charles. Answering these finer points without seeing the individual play is always very tricky. However, the MEDIUM pace suggests left hand side which of course will push the cue ball right causing you to miss on the left. Examine this on the baulk line, place the cue ball exactly on the line and see what happens when you play along the line, how the cue ball comes of the first cushion can tell you an awful lot, it can be difficult to keep the ball on the line.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому +1

      Ben. New cues for some reason tend to have horrible tips on them, why I don't know, but the first thing I do is put a new tip on one unless the cue comes from a good maker. When you put the tip on trim it with a very sharp knife but be careful not to open the tip fibres. Tip the cue upside down and apply pressure while you trim the tip, please be careful not to scratch or mark the ferrule. Then working from the centre outwards sand the tip to the required shape, I wouldn't bother with tip shapers just use a medium grade paper and take your time, a little practise and you will soon have it right. Have a look at my video that shows how to put a tip on etc. it may help.

    Screw transfers to the ball hit by the white and creates topspin by the gear effect of one ball acting on another. That red then advances toward the pocket and goes in.

  • @custard131
    @custard131 4 роки тому

    how hard can it be to screw back and knock the 4 reds into both middle pockets with 1 shot, like the common practice shot for screw shots where you pot the blue and screw into opposite middle pocket. even if its not a good idea to practice screw shots in that way does it not save a shot here?

  • @Dysusfusion
    @Dysusfusion 4 роки тому

    When back spin is used it adds topspin to that first red, making it follow into the pocket. When follow is used it had the opposite effect as if you were to use back spin hence why it stays up. Unless you do what Barry has done and it hit it with forced topping which the cue ball double kisses it into the pocket which usually results in the a foul ball.

Hitting the cushion implies that you are using the drive technique where the arm drops, nothing wrong with that but you sound as if you are over doing it, just work at keeping the cue a little more parallel as you play. Also it may help you if you put yourself on video, you may be able to spot the reason yourself, good luck with it.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach

      Gopal. I would first check the distance between your left hand and the body and don't forget that this can be influenced by where you place the bridge hand and also the degree of bend in your bridge arm, if you have any doubt on this check out my video that discusses this. Secondly work on the baulk line trying to cue in a straight line first by using the body to support the cue and then in slow motion without using the body to support the cue, this will train the muscles to work correctly. The slow motion repetitions are hard work but well worth while, your arm will ache a little which is a good sign that things are developing nicely.
