Damn unacceptable agreed!!, my nightmare also and has become part of my daily pre-checks. Look forward to seeing the differences between the HD version and the installation. Thank you for sharing this 👍

Did my Cambelt service yesterday. Only 82 000km but did as precautionary as it has been 5 years already. After VW refused to do it under warranty I did it 1 day out of warranty. They only do it on 120 000km. I also decided never to take my bakkie back to them (won’t mention which dealership)
Turned out that I did it just in time. My Fan belt had cracks in it and when it was taken off it broke in half. Lucky I geuss.
Thank you for the video. Always enjoy watching it.

Have replaced that stupid (sorry for the language) for the 5th time now in the last two years.
First they used to break right at the seams like yours. I got a much more costly unit which now breaks/cuts the bolt that attaches it to the engine frame.
Would you have an idea as to what the cause may be?

50,000 km is ridiculous.. Mine went at 185,000 but it also damaged the idler. I tell you what, removing the front cover is an absolute pain the ass. Took me hours, I had to cut a screwdriver, grind it back to thicken the flat edge, and clamp it with vice grips. So far I haven't had to remove any coolant hoses. Waiting for new pulleys. I though it was my alternator pulley that was noisy, so I bought an alternator. Mind you the alternator pulley does have a wee bit of a tiny squeak to it, but flows freely and clutch works really well. So I will change it, just in case.

what brand was the broken tensioner? (Does it say any brandname on the pulley metal?)
I will be replacing my belts, tensioner and alternator clutch soon (at the next service in 10k km) so looking forward to your next video.
I did not quite catch what you did to your alternator to make it easier to remove? They are normally propperly stuck as far as I recall seeing pictures of alternators with broken finns due to breakerbars..
Keep up the good work 😄

I replace these with VW parts. Will have a look if there's anyting on the metal. normally VW AG cast in on the metal, so will be difficult to tell who makes it for them...
I did by a continental belt from goldwagen, which I'm hoping is the same as the OEM belts, always thought them to be, but I was disappointed at the amount it stretched, gives that I replace me belts every 30k km. The failing tensioners could have stretched the belt perhaps...

@@willemtreurnicht3818 Litens makes most tensioners but, this one is not from Litens and its OEM. Same problem on the crafter

Recently had a fan belt/alternator belt break, just shredded, replaced it and the engine wont crank at all, my guess is the belt has shredded and throw some of it into the timing belt, unbelievable, pathetic really, as you said

Hi Willem, my belt starts making a noise only when I turn sharply in either direction. When the wheels are straight there's no noise. Could it be a tensioner issue or maybe the belt being stretched?

Mine does the same, thought it was my power steering pump, but today my tensioner pulley broke out and belt shredded to pieces, wonder if these works together

Hi Willem. I have just bought a 2016 amarok. It has the updated cover around the serpentine belt. There is a whining sound and an unpleasant harshness which changes with rpm and increases with power-steering load. It also increases as the alternator switches o n and ramps up after starting the engine. I suspect a worn out serpentine belt causing vibration and micro-slippages on the pulleys. I can feel the micro-slippages through the power-steering feedback on idle. I have had similar micro slippages and whining happen on a BMW i had long ago which was solved with a new serpentine belt. In your opinion would this be related to the belt only or a combination of the belt and tensioner?

    • @willemtreurnicht3818

      Hi
Have a look at the clutch pulley on the alternator. It's a one way clutch which can cease up and cause vibrations on the serpentine belt... That in time will eat up you tensioner, and if you're unlucky it will have you stand on the side of the road, and if your very unlucky the pieces of the serpentine belt will get into the cambelt and cause that to slip, which can in turn bend valves etc...
So check out the alternator pulley as well as the tensioner on the serpentine belt, if neccesary replace both, plus the idler and the belt...
If that does not solve the problem you at least know that those items are sorted, then look further to the AC compressor and power steering pump...
      Hope it helps.

@@willemtreurnicht3818 Thank you!! My amarok has the seperate covers over the timing belt and serpentine belt. I have just replaced the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and idler. Serpentine belt and serpentine belt tensioner/pulley assembly. While the belts were off I personally inspected the alternator pulley clutch, power steering pump pulley bearing, and AC compressor pulley bearing. All perfect. I also flushed and replaced the power-steering fluid. After all of those, still the whining noise with rpm and steering load. I guess the power steering pump itself must be worn out then.

Hydraulic power-steering sucks. I have had a bunch of cars/suvs with electric power steering before and it's FAR superior. It has greater actuation force than Hydraulic, and can be turned on when being towed even if the engine can't start. Amarok was far behind on this especially by the 2016-2019 period.

Thanks for the video, but its been 2days already... Can you please do a video of the installation now? 🤔. You belt is mildly damaged, mine was shreeded. And yes the tensionor looks to be out of line.

Waiting on parts to arrive. Not sure if you watched the whole video, the tensioner is completely broken... belt stretched heavily. Damage might not be that visible.
