So happy to see this. My beloved G9 has been my companion for about two years now, and I love it more every passing day.
I think it still holds up perfectly.
I’m surprised to see the backlit screen on top of the body go away, as that was quite useful.
Anyhow, I think it’ll be very hard for me to not but this. It just seems like the perfect technical upgrade without breaking the bank.
Great job to you and to LUMIX!

There was a time where people were hesitant to adopt 35mm because of the small sensor size.

The actual name of 35mm was "Kleinbild" or "small frame". I still call it that.

The original DSLRs used 35mm film lenses and mounts but with sensors smaller than 35mm film. Then, in the early 2000s, DSLRs came out with sensors that matched 35mm in size. The marketing teams boasted that the new larger sensors could capture the "full frame". It's genius marketing - the term implies that it's the ideal size.

@@shigidab0p Yes and what are the chances that a format that was first used over 100 years ago - when film was far less sensitive, had much less dynamic range and resolution - would still be the ideal size today!

@@phillipbanes5484 sure, if you're interested in the best quality you should try large format film. 8x10 has around 60 times the exposed area of full frame and can capture much more detail. But there are benefits to smaller sensors too.

What I notice is that reviewers are genuinely enthusiastic about a) a nice camera and b) a good new m43 release. Tells me enough about the viability of m43. I agree with the lens size being the main benefit of m43. I have three cheap kitzooms giving me 9mm to 300mm continuous focal range (18-600mm FF equivalent) and good quality for landscape and hyperfocal type of overall focus. I will take a fast ultra wide prime for indoor shots and maybe a longer fast prime for bokeh shots. It fills just part of my backpack. There is a 100-400mm in my future, and a high end portrait lens and I guess the sky is the limit for image quality and budget in new lenses. But which system allows such a small package for basically everything, this cheap and this good? And I bet that, even if there's no Pen-F and no GX9ii for now, there are bound to be small m43 bodies again if there are buyers.

  • @malikknows3510

Great video! Agree on all points. You mention size of lenses as a key M43 advantage and I totally agree. Also important, to me, is the fact that they are usually far cheaper, which makes them more appealing to amateurs who don't make money from their hobby. One area to focus on is when and under what conditions would a full frame camera actually deliver noticeably better results. With AI increasingly improving, those conditions are lessening, methinks.

I wanted a sealed photo focused s5.ii with a mft sensor and got it. I love my mft lenses for architecture and portraits, to replace them would cost thousands upon thousands for used equivalents, and I'm not interested in spending that when I live the look older and newer mft sensors give. Some of my favorite portraits I've seen were shot with an Olympus E-M1 and E-M5.2 (baby E-M1) with a 45mm and 75mm f1.8 lenses. That photographer has used a range of cameras, but honestly I think the shots they have with the E-M1, E-M1.2 and e-m5.2 with the relatively cheap lenses blow even the recent shots with a Canon R5 away. Obviously the R5 images are technically "better", but the MFT shots have a connection I've only gotten from shooting 120mm film in my 645 cameras. My favorite abandoned interior shots were taken with a humble Olympus E-Pl7 and look fantastic.
If I love the look and my clients love the look when I do photo work, then why should I spend thousands "upgrading?" I'm stuck between a used OM-1 for around 600 USD less or the G9.II. I'm going to wait a few months and see what happens sales wise and maybe used or open box either way.

Nice review! The G9 II kicks ass and takes names... The rumor mill is proven wrong once again. m43 is not dead! There is a LOT of pent-up demand among m43 lens owners for a top class m43 camera like this. Hopefully, they will build a version of it to replace the GH6 with a unit that has PDAF, real time LUTs, dual dual card slots (CF Express B x 2 PLUS SDXC II x 2), and all the other L-squared enhancements.

I have one on pre-order. I need a backup to my OM-1 and a replacement for my E-M5iii for video. I shoot a lot of video and the 5.3 requires a grip/L-bracket for tripod use and a micro HDMI to full size HDMI dongle and plug protector and cable restraint as well as an external recorder for 1-2 hours unattended video. I could get another OM-1 but it still has the micro HDMI socket. The OM-1 just needs a tee shirt draped over it to keep it going in direct sunlight, 95F+ temp, when recording 4k internally. I doubt that the G9ii will overheat. Small sensors are great for video and for battery life. And the G9ii will work great with my Olympus 40-150f2.8 and 150-400 Pro lenses for video and photos. Besides, I've always wanted to try a Panasonic body for video instead of dealing with all the workarounds on the Olympus bodies. Thanks for the hands on first look.

I got a great deal on the original S5 recently, and it's a great camera with great image quality, but it's not worlds better than my G9. So many people who don't have extensive experience with MFT, I think, assume that the smaller sensor can't be very good. Trust me, that's not the case. I have owned or used the Canon 5DIII, Nikon D500, Canon R7 and a Ricoh GRIIIx, so I have first-hand experience with several other cameras. I'm not a video shooter, so I can't vouch for video capabilities, but I know about stills with these cameras. I wish Panasonic had not taken so long to add PDAF because that is a notable improvement, but as far as MFT goes, it's an incredibly capable system and the size and cost of the lenses is nothing short of phenomenal when the cost is factored in. The Lumix 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8 lenses are as good as any of the f2.8 pro zooms from Nikon and Canon. They cost half as much, they're a third or half the size and weight and the IQ is outstanding. Same for most of the MFT lenses. I'm even second guessing the purchase of the S5. I'm asking myself if I should sell the S5 to buy a G9II.

The greater depth of field turns into an advantage in that situation.

@@thelemon5069 no. This term was used to distinguish apsc vs 35mm because many early digital users wanted to exploit the full capacity/width of their older 35mm lenses and were expecting canon and Nikon to build a full 35mm sensor digital camera. When the D3, D700 and Canon 5D came out, the term full frame became slowly adopted to determinate 35mm cameras. So Full frame just means lenses that fill the frame of the sensor they were dedicated for. it just became a popular term for 35mm…

I'm tempted. This looks better than the OM-1 for most people. The AF burst rate is faster at 60 FPS vs 50 (and I think it's the current winner among all general-purpose cameras), the buffer is larger, the price is lower, and it's competitive with PDAF, pre-burst, and amazing stabilization. I'm just not sure about the size; it's a lot bigger than my E-M1 II, which does raise the question of whether that larger size might justify moving to a larger format.

I have had an Olympus M1.2 forever. Before that I had both the M1.1 and M5.2. I passed on the M1.3 because no new sensor even though I wanted the improved video. Along the way I looked at the OM cameras and spent time with G9, GX8, and GH5II. Just got the G9II and love it.

Why can I not still get 422 8 bit on any camera in 2023? Give "me" choices. I´m a photographer and if I would film I would do it in 120p 422 8 bit base case. Why can I not get that in any camera? Loved the original G9 and hoping for this one to be better and cheaper!

The G9 is $900 USD, while the new body is $1,900. The size and weight of the G9II is that of APSC and FF gear, so you don't gain a thing unless you are using longer lenses. When I think of MFT, I think of nice little rangefinder style cameras, like my PEN PL-8 or GX9, or even the Olympus EM-10. Smaller gear. This new camera seems pretty good. Alas, it competes now with some pretty good contenders in APSC and FF cameras -- it might be tough.

only thing I use my m43 for is longer lenses such as adapted canon 400mm 5.6 l & 100mm Tokina macro lens. It can do other things very good but that is what I found it to be very good at and video if you into that.

      1. The lenses remain tiny by Super35mm or Fullframe35mm standards. A bag of u4/3rds lenses is still going to be signifacantly smaller and lighter.
      2. It's expensive enough to be a pro camera. That implies a full array of controls. I think we are discovering there is in fact a minimum practical size, and it derives not from sensor size but the space needed for controls and the size of peoples hands.
      3. In a world where DSLR/DSLM sales are a small fraction of what they were ten years ago, manufacturers are going to want to reuse as much body/platform design as possible to cut costs.

If I was starting off and had to buy lenses, I would go the extra $500 and buy a good condition S1 or S5. The L mount lenses from Panasonic are fantastic and not much more than M4/2 lenses. And ignore Video. How many of us have a UA-cam channel, anyway? Serious hybrid choice is the GH5/6.

For me it's the body size that's keeping me away. If I'm going for neck pain I might as well get top-of-the-line flagship neck pain.
There is a real drought of compact cameras right now. Only the Sony seem to be scaling down with the a7CII and ZV-E1 with their frame bodies being X100V sized. While Fujifilm can't even make the X-S20 significantly smaller or lighter than the Canon R8 full frame. Not that Canon are off the hook with their massive aps-c bodies. Nikon have the Z30 at least, and there's always the Ricoh GRIII.
It's a great time to be a sports and wildlife photographer. These hybrids are perfect for sitting or locked off with high fps shoots. Terrible if you intend to walk about with your camera all day and do street, documentary, travel, or snap photography though.
I think I'll stick with just the GRIII for now, and hope we get something cropped in size and weight not just sensor soon.

Everyone seems to talk these days as if it's m4/3 vs FF... but I honestly think that the best of both worlds was APS-C.
I do like m4/3 but I often look more closely in LR or whatever and think "Yeah... m4/3's quality..." It's just not QUITE there. 80% of the way, sure... but 80% is still 20% short.
Whereas APS-C is 95% of the way there, especially with the right lenses, and they're still not as big as FF. And now that we've ditched the mirror, there's even more opportunity to make small bodies that can capture stunning detail.
