The Wii U suffered an unfortunate fate thanks to its poor marketing and product confusion. The system itself was a continuation of the hardware found in the GC and Wii making it easy for the homebrew scene to implement a lot of cool things into it including emulation with Retroarch! The Wii U version of Retroarch may not feature as many systems as other platforms yet but it provides solid performance and gives your rarest Nintendo home console the ability to play games and systems that weren't lucky enough to make the Virtual Console. BTW, I found a way to use Pro Controller in retroarch. It's nor really convenient, but 100% working. So:
1. Power on your WiiU
2. Run the Haxchi. I need to do it to make third party software works. If you don't need to do it - simply keep this step. You have to run Haxchi first, cause WiiU controller (the one with screen) need to be close to the console. You see what I mean, when you gonna read next step.
3. Before run Retroarch - move away your WiiU controller (the one with screen) far enough - to make sure that it's going to become completely disconnected from the WiiU (lost signal).
4. Long press power button on your pro controller to turn it of (if it's turned off - don't need to do it). Then turn it on again and you're good with preparations)
5. Run the Retroarch with your Pro controller and it gonna work there with no issues.
Just make sure you are keeping away your Wiiu controller (with screen) all the time during the game session, so it's gonna be disconected from WiiU. If it's gonna carch signal - the console it's gonna power off occasionally. It might not happen same moment, but will happen for sure, so keep it away.

Thanks for the video it fixed my issue I was having with my Arcade punks massive build. I was so confused why it would only launch 1 time from channel launcher. I had his version and then supposively a stable version from the homebrew shop. It worked but only once. Dragging these overwrites fixed my issue. I have the new firmware Tiramisu.
One way to greatly improve loading times on RA is removing every wifi connection from the wiiu configure menu.
Also, the RA forwarder (or any custom forwarder) will freeze the wiiu if you load something else after and then load RA again, so I recommend just using haxchi's shortcut to hbl and load stuff from there.
Im using Arcade punks forwarder which is probably the same. I having an issue before this video.

Thank you so much for this! To take the forwarding/channels one step further- can you have different system icons on the home menu of the WiiU (like NES, SNES, e.t.c) and launch them similar to how the Wii would launch FCEUGX and SNES9X? Not using the VWii? I loved the simplicity of the old Wii channels but want more options with retroarch.
So I have a problem, whenever I try to install the forwarder channel, WUP GX2 installer and the original give an error, and won't let me install

for some reason everytime I install retroarch, bbe it on the app store or via sd card, i can't do anything in the main menu and my only option is to shut down the wii u. It asks me to search for something right as I boot in, but it doesn't really matter because it gets stuck anyway. I'm doing this on the gamepad btw. please help!

I did the CBHC and now I cannot play any game.
I am storing the games in a 128gb sd card (in a USB pen adpater) and using my 32gb as "vehicle". Tried to install the games, it crashes as soon as I run the game or states there is storage space problem (tried with NAND and it states the same error but this time insted of usb memory it says system memory).

Retroarch 1.9.1 is out, with the same memory error as the latest nightly. So we still have to download another stable version. You can use Wayback Machine to download 1.9.0.
After everything is up and running with the 1.9.0 / 1.9.1 mix, you can replace the 1.9.0 executable with the 1.9.1 and run Retroarch 1.9.1 without the memory error :)

@@tadpolegaming4510 You must get the 1.9.0 stable version (not a nightly one). Not very easy to find as the latest stable version on the retroarch website si 1.9.1. You can get it on the wayback machine : web.archive.org/web/20190628034040/buildbot.libretro.com/stable/1.9.0/nintendo/wiiu/RetroArch_rpx.7z
So after you've successfully booted once, you can use the latest stable build by installing it overtop 1.9.0? Simply copy the retroarch folder into sd:/wiiu/apps ?
Thanks very much for this guide everything worked great until I got to running RetroArch from the Homebrew Launcher(the memory error came up). After reading these comments, I tried the forwarding method mentioned around 11:55 and that worked great (I'm on 5.5.5 U)
I wish they would sort that memory issue before calling it a stable build... Glad the forwarder method is working out for people. I need to update the video accordingly soon.

Retroarch launcher on the Wii U home screen only works the first time. After restarting the Wii U and trying to launch it again it just locks up the system.

Hi! Thank you so much for the tutorial! Works like a charm! I have a issue: Can't add SNES ROM files, when I try to add via "Import Content" option, returns a dsi error. Regardless of whether the ROM is zipped or even the .smc file. I have already redone the installation and the problem continues. Do you have any idea?

Hey there, unfortunately this guide may be out of date. I followed your instructions to a T, but whenever I try to load RetroArch from the homebrew channel, it freezes my whole system and makes me force shutdown my console. Am I doing something wrong?

For some reason retroarch does not show up on my homebrew menu. I tried formatting and using a different sd card, but nothing.
Even downloading directly from the homebrew app doesn't make it pop out.
Try to install the forwarder instead would be my suggestion

I have everyrthing up and running however, the first time I launch the forwarder I get sent back to the wii u menu and have to launch it again for it to work. Has anybody else encountered this ?

Same here. I found another tutorial that explains Retroarch on the wiiu has to be launched by the cores. I'm on 5.5.5 and I can launch the cores but not the launcher shown in the video.

I've run into loading black screen randomly with games installed. I find nintendont and sd card games to me a lot more reliable when loading.

Ive followed this and everything went fine except where is the install folder? I've followed the hacks guide as well and I don't know if I missed something but I cannot figure how where the install folder comes from. Any help?

I can’t get retroarch to boot up with the nightly Ui, it’ll still boot but on the OG ui. Is there a place I can troubleshoot for that?
So I got the menu changed but the assets are all wrong and I try to update them but the system won’t extract the files when it’s done downloading.
Turns out I had to copy and paste my assets folder to my media folder to get it to work right. Who knew.
I am trying to homebrew my WiiU, I have never used or played on a WiiU before so i really don't know much about it, I just got mine for homebrew, I kept searching about N64 emulator and i came across couple of people on the internet saying N64 doesnt run good on the Wii U its better on the Vwii, I am so confused, what's a vwii exactly ? they make it sound like its a locked console within the console itself, can someone explain it to me please
The Wii U has a Wii mode built into it. N64 isn't worth wasting your time on with a Wii U console regardless of mode.

Help! Been trying to play 4 player X-men has anybody had problems w controllers disconnecting mid game and input having a hard time assigning everyone’s controller? Might try to just update it off the app itself. Oh wow this one doesn’t support pro controller???
I can't get any multiplayer functionality out of Wii U Retroarch.
The retro arch forwarder gives me a black screen. Im real close to giving up on this and just emulating on pc or an old android

Great video. At 1:20 I see a folder with N64 in the main menu. How is it possible to play N64 games on the Wii U ? Do you already have video or video recommendation to that topic ?

look up wii u forwarders if you want that. Also Wii U injects. However on Tiramisu due to the way they changed the Homebrew Launcher to open forwarders are not supported even though they may still work.
What if I dont have an "install" folder on my SD card? One was never created when I installed tiramisu

My Wii U isn't recognizing the forwarder in your description... It just won't show up when I start WUP installer. I extracted the folder and all, but nothing. Any idea why this is happening? Also, the Retroarch won't start in the homebrew menu, a error with the system memory shows up. Please help.
The Retroarch updates broke the homebrew launcher version. Not sure why WUP installer would be giving you trouble though I just redid a full Wii U RA install with it last weekend without issue. I'm going to be posting an update video next week but I'd make sure the RA forwarder doesn't have any unusual characters in its file name and that it isn't in a subfolder by accident.

Is the Retroarch folder on the root of the SD card?
@@ArchadesGames Yup, the Retroarch folder of the nightly build is in the root of the sd card, and the Retroarch app of the Stable version is in Wii u apps folder.
I have an idea to fix this Black screen, but if doesn't Work I'll download the older versions of Retroarch

I couldn't install the Retroarch Chanel Forwarder from the Mega zip and GBA Temp site. I have the latest update 5.5.5. I got everything else to work except that. I received a error message when I load up Wup Installer GX2 saying " No installable content found" . I did everything right.
Update: for some reason when you unzip the file you get Retroarch [#####$$$ , you actually want the file inside of that one with just the matching numbers only. Put that in your install Forwarder instead. It works now 😌 👌

Idk why it is not working for me I did the steps but it is saying there is a problem with system memory (and yes I did hear him say nightly can not load) . I am sure that I have done the steps right if any one can help me I will be glad if you can.

I stopped at the part that gives the error in the memory of the console, I tried everything and I couldn't get past that part, but still congratulations on the tutorial
The new "stable" version of Retroarch is broken so the only work around is to find the old version or install the forwarder channel I link to in the description.
The first file you download is stable right and the second is the nightly?
That method no longer works. Install the forwarder for now.

Place the Retroarch files as shown then install the Wii U channel forwarder as shown.

It seems that they've updated RetroArch to support Pro Controllers and more controllers, including GameCube Controllers and Wii Remotes!
Edit: Don't connect more than a total of 4 controllers because it will make stuff not work

Just so everyone knows, CBHC does NOT work on 5.5.6. Use Tiramisu
The fact nobody at all is working on PS1 emulation for the Wii U really sucks. I know there's a bounty on it but it's been met with 0 interest. It would be a fantastic system for it. PPSSPP could potentially also run pretty well, but the one guy working on it seems to have given up.
Genuinely don't understand the lack of interest from people working on the stuff, it's such a perfect system for all of it.
The Wii U is severely underpowered for emulation and there doesn't seem to be much interest in it at all from the homebrew scene.
I'm gonna have to buy a second Wii U to hack since my kid would be devastated if I bricked ours... and my wife would ban me from anything like it in the future lol
