    Nice Russian accent!! Ura!! My dad was a cat mechanic for 38 years for Holt of San Antonio, TX. He started out working the nightshift in the truck shop in the early 70's and we lived about 5 miles away so when he would rebuild an engine he would break it in by driving it home for lunch(2 or 3 am) and my mom would wake me up so I could go sit in the truck while he ate. He would take me on service calls to repair heavy equipment around town I was the wrench and socket gofer:)) Mostly rock quarries and the fun part was testing them when he was done!!!God how I love those $300 whores they were they best!! All the rock quarries in San Antonio are now shopping malls or amusement parks. Keep the yellow paint coming!! Thanks for the videos!!

    Jeff, I've rebuilt lots of these engines. Always replaced the advance springs. There were always signs of scuffing. Many were worse than yours. I polished with a stone and put 'em back together. Always worked out for me.

    G'day Jeff, The wear band in the head is a Cat update but you will need a copy of the old Hydraulic Cylinder and Seal Handbook for the part numbers and the dimensions to machine the head. This book also has your standard and oversize seal and kit part numbers in it as well as all the standard and oversize rod and bore dimensions as well as the oversize seal hand seal modification and head seal part numbers. Not many Dealer parts guys would know about this. Cheers mate🍻

    Old pump looks like a ceasna pump. I'd say those wear wear rings are some type of bronze. If your air compressor is like our old shop truck was it liked to create a huge amount of moisture. Was always great trying to use it on a wreck scene in the winter and the valve be frozen and it wouldn't make any air. Great video.

  • @ddwi318gmail

    Gear pumps have pressure internally on one side only, WHEN/IF the shaft bushings wear, the steel gears contact the aluminum housing and gouge it out-no damaged seen on gears. While you may have had some trash go thru the pump, it may be just normal wear. The removed pump appears to be a Cessna, very similar to what JD used to use on older small crawlers, I consider them a throw away pump. Half the time the bolts pull the threads out of the aluminum when you remove them, people want to put a shaft seal in when they start leaking, but they're just worn out.

    Nice videos! I'm down in Florida where the humidity is really high. Had huge problems when I first moved here with air tools freezing up and being destroyed from all the water in the lines. I installed a hydraulic oil cooler on the back side of the flywheel fan on my compressor to cool the air and right after that I installed a water separator before it went into the tank. The water separator is self draining. For all practical applications I have virtually no air in my lines now. If you were painting you might need a little better dryer but for everything else it works amazing for very little cost and no more moving parts. If you try it you might find yourself installing on all your compressors. Good luck. Love the videos.

    That Vickers pump will give you some good service, long as you have good filtration. A suction screen and a good return filter system. As always routine oil sampling is always a good idea. I've always ran ISO GST-100 oil in the compressors I rebuilt. It's a clear oil and you can see if your getting any contamination in the crank case.. Nice set up Jeff.

    Looks like the service truck will be good for another season or two. A lot of the mods you made are on the new one's that I've moved. VanAir compressor, the transport support for the crane. Full hydraulic on the outriggers. Some have full remote lock up for both cab and tool boxes. The only thing they seem to insist on keeping, that I don't like, is the stowage for that blasted remote. Magnet only, and magnet switch to the alarm in the cab. You go over a rough grade crossing, you have to park it, get out, go back and put the remote back in it's hole. I gave them an idea for a spring loaded clip that would make sure it stayed in place during transport, but the engineer in charge of thing (by the look on his face) seemed to be offended by the suggestion. My little chicken scratch sketch probably went directly into the trash when I left. Last I knew, they still had that problem.
    One day, the guy that was in charge of the outgoing trucks told me of an oddity. Trucks that they had built with the autocrane were tipping over. No load, outriggers down and locked, boom swung around for use, and just sitting there, and all of a sudden it's going over. It was happening only on trucks with their bed built with the autocrane. The day he told me of that, he said that he was due to leave, as soon as he was done there, to investigate another report of that happening. I never heard whether or not they had found the cause. I know that, for a long time after that, they used cranes that they had built exclusively.
    I guess I'll quit there, now that I've boosted you confidence in your service truck ... ... ;-)

Changed a 657E front today , finish it tomorrow hopefully !!! The timing advance i have seen them with broken fly weights - just replace the springs , it will be fine . Cheers .

    I bought two hydraulic pumps very much like yours at an estate sale. They're Vickers vane pumps and their output is pretty dang high. dual output too. I want to make a huge log splitter with one of them. It has a keyed shaft, unlike your splined shaft. Exact same color too -- and that's important.

    If you are fixing all the oil leaks on machines as you can't have any, did you mess up and quote to cheap for a job in California L.O.L. Thats sure making a nice service truck with all the updates. The biggest problem now is you painted all those odd bit's, you got to do the whole truck to match so it all looks good again.
    I found a gas F450 with service body and big crane for sale real cheap the motors done, I was thinking of doing a Fummins conversion. the big problem is it makes a $3800 truck way to much money when it's done and government inspected for the road here in Canada. Thanks for the video, Take care.

    Be sure there are no burrs and that there isn't a spot where the weights normally set at WOT that has worn in the side of the slides that would cause it to hang up. Be sure you run a good oil with lots of zink in it to help with that sliding lube of that part.

    • @Jpaydirt
      @Jpaydirt  5 років тому

      Zinc is becoming a scarcity these days, I'm afraid the lack of it will ruin these older engines, I polished the rough stuff, but one thing I noticed is, if equal pressure is not applied to each weight they tend to bind, hoping a polish and new springs do the trick

  • @rogermarshall8991
    @rogermarshall8991 5 років тому

    1 if ya want a spare pump, Bailey hydraulics has some good prices on new gear pumps. Ya that first stage gear housing is trash. Did you put a screen on your suction line in the tank. ??? The Cat sticker will increase Flow by 50%. The truck will go faster now. That's pressure switch Jeff, I seen it climb up and not shut off. Make sure the safety valves are not stuck or full of trash. You may want to replace most of the control system. Just for a safety point. Sounds like the compressor is operating normally.

    Some funny shit there imitating the exhaust sound .. Anyway at 28:19 time mark you asked if i knew of a way to fix the venerable timing advance (flyweight markings) on the backing plate.
    I haven't worked on a 3306 but there is a technique to add material to the backing plate and then it can be removed by lath, milling, cut on a sharper or precision ground back to spec. The technique is called Thermal spray wielding I've seen it used in meany different applications like reconditioning large shafts to plating ruff or pitted flat surfaces. Different materials are used for bonding to surface(s) from brass and silver solder more wearable materials. If the part cannot be obtained at a reasonable price or procured in a reasonable time this might be a viable option

    Always nice when someone fills a tank full of 💩💩 💩 when they built it!!! The hydraulic tank on my service truck was crazy!! I've built all kinds and sizes of fuel, water, hydraulic tanks... I always clean them out when I'm done, usually get maybe a half a handful of crap out... OMG!! I did not build this hydraulic tank, it's been in service on a fertilizer buggy for over 20 years... It's only a 15 gallon tank, when I cleaned it up for the service truck, I filled an old 3 pound coffee can with all the metal I got out of it!!! Mostly welding wire. I couldn't believe anyone could be that bad with a MIG!!!
    I like the mods on the crane!! I finally gave up looking for a hydraulic crane for my service truck... Picked up an older Auto Crane cable crane off one of our local Case-IH dealers trucks... Price was right!! It will work!!

      Ed Gosselin, this is the channel I go to for some relaxation and to let my brain slow down when I have problems sleeping at night. Fantastic channel and as old as I am I still learn a bunch watching Jay Paydirt and his crew. I think I bumped into you on this one before. Like to see your comments and I am sure Jay enjoys your input as well. Catch you later neighbor! Time to start farming again if it would ever stop raining. Nick

      Ya... Lots of farming to get done, not much time left to do it in.
      About the time it will be dry enough to get field work done, it will rain again...
      Rained all night, sounds like it just quit...... Rest when you can Nick!

    Looking good Jeff! Will you be painting the service truck CAT yellow? Sure would look spiffy!
    City of Cincinnati had to shut down their street trolley because the brake lines were freezing up. Think they would be smart enough to put an air dryer on but it has been sitting for months. Maybe I should share JPAYDIRT channel so they can figure it out! Thank you Jeff and Jake for an awesome video!

      The highway around louisville has joints every 4' seems like and uneven as all hell so you talk about that ol trailer a hunchin...lol..we were praying to god we didn't loose a whole engine at 80mph bumper to bumper

    • @super6954
      @super6954 5 років тому

      @@arborist460 I wouldn't be worried about loosing one. I'd be more worried about the missiles they might become if you went from 80 mph to zero pretty quick, if you hit something that stopped in front of you and the load tie downs snap !. Guys round here will haul something like a 4440 JD tractor on a trailer with a 3500 truck at 110 km with 2 chains holding it. they don't realize either where that tractors going if they hit something and the truck and trailer stops suddenly !

      Yes I will need one, I think in hot weather running the compressor heavily will get it to hot

      Thanks Jeff!!! I've been a heavy equipment mechanic with the Navy Seabees for the last 13 years. Lots of old Cats early on in my career, loved running the D7G's, H's, D8 & D9G's. Also had the opportunity to play around with a few 631 single engine scrapers, and an old 657 single engine scrapers. All this new Joystick stuff irritates me, I need a degree in computer science to troubleshoot and diagnose them. It's been a lot of fun tho.
